I was part of group that spent 9 days on the Kokoda Trail with John and his team from Kokoda Trail Expeditions. it was an amazing experience made richer by John’s unique perspective. Having grown up in PNG, joined the PNG Army and then transferred to the Australian Army, John is both very knowledgable and passionate about the history of the Trail.
The team of porters that John selected for the trip were mostly from the one village and, while we never got the bottom of it, seemed to all be related somehow. Anyway we soon became absorbed into their lives and this provided a cultural aspect to the trip that we hadn’t expected.
The Kokoda Trail is definitely challenging but achievable and the whole experience was made all the better by joining John and his team.

Dear John,
I’m just writing to thank you and your team at Kokoda Trail Expeditions for the excellent trip along the Kokoda Trail you led in September of this year, 2019.
The preparation for, and in-country organisation of a group of trekkers from two different countries is never easy yet your leadership and low-key friendly approach quickly helped the group to gel and come together.
Arrival and transfer to the hotel was seamless and efficient and the hotel provides a comfortable start and acclimatisation to PNG. Once underway to Kokoda the trip to Bomana Cemetary really helped to set the scene of the loss and challenges faced by the Australian infantry in their endeavour to hold back the advancing Japanese forces. This was reinforced by the many facts and detailed maps you were able to share with the group throughout the trail.
A highlight for me personally was in meeting the fantastic group of personal and group porters. They were warm and friendly, keen to share a glimpse of their home lives and learn more about us as they guided us and supported us through the jungle. At many stages on steep descents or whilst crossing a bridge the guiding hand of Ronnie was never far and it was evident that all porters were ever vigilant with the various trekkers under their care. They were a credit to Kokoda Trail Expeditions and PNG as a whole.
The trek is certainly challenging not only in a physical sense with early mornings and potentially long days but the pace set, frequent breaks and great lunch breaks made it eminently achievable for all. Possibly something unique that you and your team bring is the very real understanding of the sacrifices made and the horrors that the Australian forces endured on a daily basis.
The morning on Brigade Hill will forever remain with me and all of the group as your experience within the military made the telling of the tale of an almost futile yet heroic engagement all the more poignant as we commemorated 75 years to the day of the Battle of Brigade Hill and those brave Australians that made the ultimate sacrifice.
The countryside and people along the Kokda Trail are both spectacular, welcoming and friendly in equal measure and I would wholeheartedly recommend Kokoda Trail Expeditions to anyone thinking of rising to the challenge of the Kokoda Trail. It is a true trek in every sense of the word, pack your bag with a sense of adventure, a willingness to explore and learn, a can-do positive attitude and Kokoda Trail Expeditions will repay you with a unique vision of the spectacular Kokoda Trail, it's stories, it's people and the fascinating country of Papua.
Thank you and your team for making such a memorable trip possible.

The Kokoda trail is a beast, there is no other way to say it - 96km of beautiful country that pushed me to my limits, both physically and mentally, and left me humble to the reality of the great sacrifice and courage made by all that had to call this their battlefield.
From the River crossings, cliff face trails, staggering accents to plummeting descents this hike was relentless, I was either sweating or swearing, crying or cursing and yet I never had any regrets. This was challenge, a lesson and journey all rolled into one and ultimately a once in a lifetime experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.
Kokoda Trail Expeditions were amazing, from detailed itineraries to knowledgeable guides (big thanks to Ken, Aaron and Gill for keeping me alive, fed and sane) all I needed to do was show up and Hike the trail - a LOT easier said than done. I’d also like to thank John for running Kokoda Trail Expeditions, he ensured that the tours compensated all the villages visited, remained environmentally and were culturally conscious and respectful. Thank you all so much!

Hiking the Kokoda Track was an incredible experience and this was predominantly due to the excellence of “Adventure Kokoda” and their team. Wouldn’t have done it through any one else and am already planning my next trek through the same company. Highly recommended and encourage all to do the same!

Thank you " Adventure Kokoda " for an amazing trek experience. We trekked from Ower's Corner to Kokoda across the most extreme mountainous countryside in the world, and survived thanks to Reg Yates and the PNG guide team lead by Knoxcy. My son and I loved every minute of the Trek, although during at times we questioned whose idea it was. Reg is a walking military encyclopedia, and the PNG team guided us, assisted us and kept us safe the whole time.
There was nothing more we could have asked for from Tracey and the Adventure Kokoda team. We were accompanied by a group of 11 other wonderful fellow trekkers. We had ball. At times we all laughed, and at times we all felt the emotion of what the track was all about. There were even a few tears at the Isurava Memorial .
If anyone is thinking of walking the Kokoda Track ; book with Adventure Kokoda ; don't put it of; definitely do it. It is a part of Aussie History that you really need to experience and appreciate. If you are a dad, do it with your son, it's magic. And remember to save up some up of those bad "Dad" jokes for nights in the camp.

We were lead by Reg Yates who did a fantastic job of explaining the military history of the Kokoda Trail. The PNG team lead by Knoxy, were incredible. They handled us, the load and the trek effortlessly and always with a smile. Tracie and Donald work hard behind the scenes to make sure that our trip goes well and without any hitch. They were even at Brisbane airport to meet and greet us and make sure we were travelling well. I highly recommend "Adventure Kokoda", they were fantastic.
My one piece of advice if you are thinking of doing the Kokoda Trek, do lots of stair work before hand. Both up and down and with a pack. Vary how many stairs you climb each time. Your knees will thank you as the Kokoda Trail is one giant staircase up and down.
Thanks Adventure Kokoda for a great trek.

How lucky I was to share this experience with not only my very dear friend but ten of the best guys you could ever wish to meet. From the friendly, caring, experienced PNG support crew that took great care of us who inturn are well supported and rewarded by the trek operators Adventure Kokoda, to the leadership of Reg and his amazing knowledge of the Kokoda campaign at the various battle sites and throughout our pilgrimage - I could fault nothing. Even his jokes were funny!Looking back the hardest part, despite climbing a waterfall, slipping on the muddy trail and lack of sleep was saying good-bye at the end. I feel so privileged to have had this experience - thank you Adventure Kokoda.

The Kokoda Track is a relentless and rewarding trek and a must do! It's very easy to see the passion of Mick and the Australian Kokoda Tours team on making this such an unforgettable experience. Our safety is their paramount concern and the historical war knowledge was outstanding, not to mention a real eye opener. I'd thoroughly recommend this team to take you safely into the jungle. In fact I'd follow Mick and his team into war, that's how safe I felt. Mick's contribution to the local villages was not unnoticed and I take my hat off to his respect for the culture and communities. Our group was also the best !

Wanting to do the track with son (21) for a father son bonding experience. We both love war history. Is their any particular tour anyone could recommend that would be good for us. I do have an injury (titanium rod in leg). I don't work out but have property so am physical most days. Thinking of doing this with other men from family maybe also.

Adventure Kokoda specialises in the war history of the Kokoda campaign. Most of our trek leaders are former professional soldiers. We are the only trekking company that follows the original wartime Kokoda Trail. If you Google 'Adventure Kokoda' or 'Kokoda Treks you will be able to view our website.

I’d like to know what the overall cost for the trip would be, including flights from Brisbane?
Contact Shane at Escape Trekking Adventures, he can advise you on best prices for flights, give advice on tours and whatever else you need. Brilliant operator on Kokoda, honest and genuine. Highly recommend. Good luck on your trek.

Hi there - I currently do personal training 4 times a week and walk over 15,000 steps a day (I consider myself active) but not fit in terms of running long distances. The trek is something I'd love to do in April - is there any additional fitness requirements I should consider - 30 years old and no injuries. Thanks in advance

You would seem to be physically OK however we would recommend you get a full medical check-up then increase your training level by 10% per week through 'till April. If you Google Adventure Kokoda (kokoda treks) and click on 'Contact Us' Tracie will send you more detailed information.
Looking for people who did not use a porter on Kokoda to offer 1) Training advice (besides the obvious train with your pack & weight equivalent you will be carrying) & 2) Overall honesty as to difficuly level carrying your own pack, harder or easier than expected, any challenges faced?.
Please no one reply with "definitely use a porter" as I am wanting only experiences of those whom did not use one, so I can make an informed decision. THANKS

Hi, I am looking to do the Kokoda Trek later this year (a group of 2-3 people), and was wondering if anyone had recommendations on which companies to look at?
Budget is standard, we are pretty fit & looking for a bit of history/ education.
I am a little overwhelmed by the amount of companies on Kokoda Track Authorities site!! There are a few forums on this but they all seem quite old.
Thanks :)

'Adventure Kokoda' has been leading people safely across the Kokoda Trail for the past 26 years - the company specialises on the Kokoda Trail and does not trek to any other destination. The company has been rated No 1 on Trip Advisor for the past three years.
Adventure Kokoda has established a Not-For-Profit company called Network Kokoda (which you can Google) to provide support to local villages in health, education and agriculture. Among the major projects funded by Network Kokoda are an education centre at Sogeri; a fish farm at Iaowari High School and a TB Isolation Ward at Popondetta Hospital. As a result Adventure Kokoda enjoys popular support from local village communities along the way.
Adventure Kokoda is the only trekking company to provide for the welfare of the guides and carriers they engage by providing them with individual sleeping bags and mats together with a full trekking uniform and a full menu of nutritional meals.
Do not rely on any information on the Kokoda Track Authority website - the organisation is beyond dysfunctional and currently under review.
If you Google Kokoda Treks - Adventure Kokoda you can send an email via the 'Contact Us' tab and Tracie will send you an information package.

I don't know David Howell. My Kokoda trekking experience is three times with Adventure Kokoda and they are very, very good - extremely professional.
How much would you budget for the Kokoda treck? like minimum?

Depends on your point of departure and the amount of time you spend on the trail itself.

Is it cheaper to use a local PNG company than use an Aussie company, if so does any one have any recommendations.
Thank you

Hi, I did 8 days on the Kokoda track as a solo female trekker with a PNG guide in Jul 2016. My guide was Arthur Danny who is now the owner/operator/guide of his own new local PNG company KOKODA SIKMAC EXPEDITIONS. I highly recommend Arthur. Not only that, he was recommended to me on the spot at the KTA office. They wouldn't even let me go with the other local operator I had already corresponded with by email, as they only trusted Arthur to take me over the track. He was my guide, he cooked for me and he was an awesome source of encouragement from beginning to end. He is way cheaper by $1000-$2000 than his Oz counterparts. I got homemade Pizza, Tuna Pasta, Roast Chicken/Potatoes n Spinach, Milo, biscuits and the works out there. He has worked for other Oz companies for over 10 years. He has walked the track over 70 times and has even completed it in under 24 hours, the whole 96kms of it. In short, Arthur is the man. PM him on Artz Dan on messenger for more details. However, any questions I will do my best to answer. A few of my friends are going to be going on the trek now too with Arthur so I know his current prices. 🙂
