One of the sites that I made a point of visiting was this UNESCO Heritage Site. It's easiest and most fulfilling to visit on a local tour, because the cave site itself doesn't look like much. It's the context that gives you understanding of the significance of the place and the historical figure of Chief Roi Mata. If you're into culture and history, definitely recommend to hear about Vanuatu and cannibalism, and the eventual end of the practice.

This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site spread out over three locations. I took a wonderful tour and learned a lot about Chief Roi Mata and Vanuatu culture. Our guide, Helen, was excellent and really cared about the site and its importance. Go off the beaten path and you will see a lot. We visited the Chief's village, the cave where he drew his last breath, and his burial ground. I highly recommend this tour.

We really enjoyed our visit to the Village area where Chief Roimata once lived. We were picked up at the Havannah, cruised along the coast and arrived at a beautiful spot on the beach. Our guide, a local Ni van woman was exceptionally knowledgeable about the history of the village and the many stories about the Chief and other local villages at that time. Although there was not a huge amount to see at this stop, the scenery and stories made up for it.
We jumped back in the boat and headed across to the caves, and were completely blown away by the cave art and sheer size of the caves.
There was a bit of a hike up a steep hill to the caves. so you need to be able to climb/walk up approximately 40metres.
We returned to the beach for morning tea of pastries, local fruit and tea and coffee.
This was not a glossy Hugh end your by commercial operators- it was a low key, casual tour run by locals- and they was exactly what we loved about it.
The caves are a UNESCO world heritage site, and we hope it remains that only very small tours run by locals continue to visit. It would be a shame to see large tour groups arriving and potentially ruining such a tranquil, magical place, with so much rich history. Will visit again upon our return.

What a fabulous incite to a history. The invite Chief Roi Mata had about people inter marrying and stopping it by creating different groups is amazing back 400 plus years. Cathy was our guide who is a fabulous story teller in giving you so much information. Beautiful people and stunning cave. Very much worthwhile

We did this tour as part of a bespoke round the island tour with Native round island tours. Our guide Helen was lovely. Very informative and really conveyed the sacredness of the sites. They changed the order of the sites we visited around as they were worried about a deteriorating sea state (perhaps they'd read some of the negative reviews) but it didn't matter.

There not so much to see per second as much as there is to listen to and understand the history of the island and why chief Roi Mata remains important to the people of efate. To top it off there seems to be arhciological evidence for all the stories, giving pause for thought

This tour is not for resort and cruiseship people.
It is amazing and offers a great insight into the history, lifes and culture of local people. The guide knew a lot about the history and also explained everything about plants we saw in the forest. The lunch was cooked and served by her mother. This means you don't have toilets, bottled water, luxury and air conditioning. You will get an absolutely authentic experience. Homemade food and mango juice, served the way locals do it. We booked the tour for 4 of us and had everything for ourselves, even with snorkeling at the island with the grave. Yes and the cave with its history was simply amazing.

Unless you are Historian or an acquaintance of Chief Roi Mata, this is a total waste of most part of the day. Nothing much to see and a whole load of traditional history. The guide was charming and as such I tolerated it!

ツアーでしか訪れることのできない世界文化遺産のスポット。三つの島に分かれており、ツアーでは全てに上陸できた。積んである石は小さく、簡単な墓だが、無人島独特の雰囲気はなかなか体験できないものでおススメ。

This was a half day tour that started by going to hat island which has been forbidden to visit for around 400 years. Our guide gave a detailed story of the Chief and his village who brought peace to the land. The chiefs grave and his people’s graves who were buried alive surrounding him is amazingly well kept and transports you back in time where unimaginable sacrifices were made for their beloved chief. The tour then voyages onto Lelepa island and the cave which the chief took his last breath. Their are drawings from over 400 years ago in the cave and the cultural heritage explained by the tour guide gives you a real sense of how life was back when Chief Roi Mata lived. This tour brings you closer to understanding the history of Vanuatu and the people who have an amazing cultural heritage which continues to live on through this amazing tour and the people of Mangaliliu village.
