An essential part of any trip to Yangon - the synagogue has been beautifully maintained by Sammy Samuels and family (despite a small jewish population of about 20).

This is a historic synagogue that once served the large Jewish population that lived in Rangoon mostly before WWII. Sammy and his family from Shalom Travel are doing a wonderful job of preserving its history and renovating it to its old glory.

We made a short stop at Yangon's only synagogue in the middle of the day when the temperature was too hot for sightseeing outside. It was indeed interesting to visit a synagogue in a major Buddhist country. There are photos on display depicting the history of the small Jewish population in Yangon. It's worth a visit while in the city.

this synagogue made me think of the Jewish life in the 1900s as this Synagogue used to be the home of over 2000 Torah and, now, it has only two. I'm sure you will want to know more about Jewish people in Myanmar after visiting this.

Une synagogue pas particulièrement belle au milieu d’un quartier musulman et plusieurs mosquées, étonnant ! Ce temple est aujourd’hui plus une attraction touristique qu’un lieu de culte.

Never thought of visiting a Jewish Synagogue in a popular Buddhist nation of Myanmar. I could see Myanmar (especially in Yangon) is a melting pot of different religions and races, of which we easily see Buddhist temples, churches, mosques and even synagogue in the same city area. Hoping this harmony spirit will lift up forever, cheers!

Earlier generations of this family established this synagogue so that they and their Jewish friends, neighbors, and families could continue to observe their traditions of millennia. While the size of the community shrank dramatically since the 1950's, the family still maintains this congregational home. This is a "MUST SEE" for Jewish tourists, as well as many Christians as well. It is beautiful and inspiring.

Hi Moses,My Mother left Rangoon Burma, where her family resided as an attachmentto the AVG to join as a secretary to the US Army, during WWII. She was one of three women to march up The Old Burma Trail later working in India, where the family immigrated, when the Japanese bombed. My Grandfathers name was Moses Chi Jacobs,Azizza Jacobs, his wife, were Iraqi Jews. I am very interested to know anything in Myanma. About their home. They were related to Solomon family as well. Meeda Jacobs was my Mom.

So sorry about our late reply. We just signed as account user and saw this question. At the synagogue - we do have birth registry and if any of your family members were born in Rangoon? If so we trace in back. Most of the Jews in Rangoon lived around York, Lancaster Road.

Hi did you email Samuel? If so could I have the address to write to.
Thanks

I did not email Samuel. I knew about the synagogue because I am Jewish and I have a big interest in SE Asia. The Lonely Planet Myanmar Guidebook recommended the synagogue as an important place to visit. I went to find the synsgogue; Samuel was sitting inside the gate and let me and some German tourists with a Burmese tourguide inside the synagogue. The Burmese tourguide was courious about the synagogue because he had never seen it before.
The Myanmar Tourism Agency is promoting the synagogue to Americans, Europeans, and Jewish people to visit while they are in Yangon.

When are the opening times of the Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue. We will be there from March 2nd in the afternoon for three days leaving on the afternoon of March 4th
Skrevet 25. januar 2015
Hi,
There is no need for making any reservation, Musmeah Yeshua synagogue is open daily (except for shabbat) from 10-12 and from 4-6PM and there is no entrance fee, although contributions are welcomed for keeping the maintenance of the building.
Synagogues caretaker is Moses Samuels, a member of Yangon’s tiny Jewish community of around 20 members. Mr Samuels' son Sammy runs the tour agency Myanmar Shalom; You can contact him directly if you have specific questions about the Jews of Yangon.
If you have the time, walk the streets around the synagogue to get the feeling of the area. There are many mosques in this part of town and the street life is very colorful.
If you have any questions regarding Yangon or Myanmar i would be happy to help. Safe trip and enjoy!

One of my goals when travelling is, after choosing a country to visit, to find out if there is a synagogue there. We have been pleasantly surprised as to the existence of Jewish temples in the least likely of places. Never disappointed, for there is always a story, a history. We are going to Myanmar in a month, and wish to visit the Musmeah Yeshua that I thank all of you for writing about. One important question I have is whether or not an advance reservation or invitation must be arranged and if anyone knows the hours that the synagogue is open for visiting. I saw one post mentioning it in July 2014. Thank you.
Skrevet 2. januar 2015
I don't know the hours but it usually open throughout the day. Moshe Samuels, the caretaker, has a son, Sammy, who runs a travel agency and if you google Sammy Samuels, the website might come up. This is a beautiful synagogue with a rich history right in the heart of a bustling, congested city. My daughter works in Yangon, and many other Jewish ex-pats and embassy people gather at this shul for holidays, etc. As you might imagine, I am thrilled that there is a Jewish community in Myanmar with whom my daughter can connect.
