This is Lake Nasser, an artificially created lake.
You can see Lake Nasser from the Abu Simbel Temple, so I enjoyed it. It was a beautiful lake.
The reason why it is an artificially created lake is because of the construction of the Aswan High Dam, which was built to prevent flooding of the Nile River and to provide water for irrigation. I vaguely remember learning about it in world history class.
Lake Nasser is apparently a huge lake that stretches from southern Egypt to northern Sudan.

This is a fairly long and detailed review because I found very few for the cruise online. It was only when I tried to review it that I found that Lake Nasser seemed to have most of the reviews. We embarked on the Prince Abbas in Aswan (Mon) and disembarked in Abu Sibbel (Fri). Going upstream is 4 nights while the alternative trip downstream from Abu Simbel to Aswan is 3 nights. We flew back from Abu Simbel to Aswan at the end of our cruise. The Prince Abbas was built about 25 years ago but follows the general design of the original Prince Abbas steamer from the 1890s but with a few more decks and a lot of extra facilities. So the ship has a gracious old world air to it which I really appreciated.

I loved the look of the ship with its polished wood decks and stairways. Everything is kept spotlessly clean and polished by the crew. The ship has external walkways so there are no balconies. There are two three-person golden elevators from reception (floors 1 to 4). There are multiple stairways and a stair from reception to the restaurant. Viewing is best from the common areas on the upper (5th floor) and lower (4th floor) sun decks as well as the Oriental area on the 4th deck. Even if the boat was at full capacity I do not think it would feel crowded. There are inside common areas - the greenery room and the Royal Lounge Bar. Reception is on the main (1st deck) and restaurant is on the lower deck. There is also a gym and reasonably priced massage room which was quite popular. My husband tried it and was happy with it. There is an unheated plunge pool and a very warm jacuzzi with beach sized towels available on deck.

The Prince Abbas has 65 rooms. Housekeeping is twice a day. All staff we met were very friendly and helpful. Our room, midship, had one window (approx 60 cm W x 120 cm H) but you can upgrade to a room with bigger windows. The room is reasonably spacious with a comfortable king size bed and good luggage storage, a desk, a chair and a stool. It is well lit and has air conditioning. There is a fridge (check that it is turned on if you wish to use it) and a kettle with tea and instant coffee. The bathroom is a prefabricated cubicle (about 160 x 160 cm) including the curtained shower recess which may feel a bit cramped but we are used to boat life and were OK with it.

The only accessible power point in our entire cabin powered the fridge though we later found another hidden behind the desk. Our power point was just a single but another room said they had a double power point instead. To handle our usual assortment of electronic appliances we requested a power board from reception which we were given. Wifi is only available in the Royal Lounge Bar on the 4th deck but only in Aswan and just before or in Abu Simbel. Our Egyptian SIM card gave us a bit of extra coverage but not much more - for most of the cruise there was no signal on it either.

Breakfast is usually 7-8 am, lunch at 1 pm, tea-time (tea, coffee, biscuits, cake) at 5 pm with tour guide briefing in the Royal Lounge Bar and 7:30 pm dinner in the restaurant. No phone use is allowed in the restaurant and the dress code is smart casual (no shorts) and we had the same table throughout our trip. Two bottles of bottled water were delivered to room daily and juices are available when embarking or rejoining the boat. We were treated with free juices and cocktails on one night and falafels on another day. Drinks are available in the bar and the sun decks as well.

Breakfast was buffet style with hot croissants, pastries, various breads, cereals and omelet station. Lunches and dinners were a mixture with some set menus with table service and some buffet. The set menu was usually a choice of chicken or fish and sometimes beef main with a choice of three deserts supplemented by soup, bread and salad from the buffet. Buffet style meals offered chicken, beef, fish, made to order pasta, pizza, sometimes lasagna, salads, breads and deserts. Most foods are European style but there is Syrian bread and usually at least one Egyptian dishes such as a local spinach, eggplant casserole or fasollia. One dinner and one lunch also served primarily Egyptian food. Drinks are at an additional cost and can be ordered at the table and paid for at the end of the trip.

After the first day you will have one or two approximately two hour duration tours per day. If you have a tour group then you will have a guide for your group. We were travelling just as a couple so we were paired with another English speaking couple with our guide Medhat who was very knowledgeable and helpful. He was able to make our visits work seamlessly, assisted in some special requests and re-confirmed transfers. The Prince Abbas moors on or near the attraction and you are delivered by motor boat tender. You need to navigate a stair onto the boat and a gangplank onto land but we found them very easy and help is always at hand.

On Tuesday you depart Aswan around sunrise (I think) and get to Kalabsha Temples around breakfast time and then visit them followed by a one hour documentary movie at 12 noon. After your visit the rest of the day is spent on Lake Nasser. We had one other cruise ship on the water with us. The lake was very calm. The ship continues to sail through till about 9pm when it reaches Wadi Al-Sebua. The next morning you travel closer to the shore as the lake narrows and there were visits to Seboa Temple, Dakar Temple and Maharraqa temples. Then ship then set sail for Amada where we visited Amada Temple, Elderr Temple and Pennut Tomb. At Abu Simbel the boat docks and you can walk directly onto the land and take the path to the Abu Simbel temples by yourself, if you wish. Usually the boat arrives at Abu Simbel on the Friday lunch-time but we had a change to the normal schedule as Thursday was the 22nd March where the dawn light illuminates the inside of the temple. The cruise pushed on to moor at Abu Simbel on the 21st to offer this opportunity to its guests.

We were very happy with this cruise. It offered access to difficult to see attractions, views of the desert, good food and comfortable bedrooms. My biggest recommendation is not about the cruise itself but to say DON’T check into the cruise at 1 pm Monday unless you really just want to relax on board (and there is time for that on the rest of the trip). Prince Abbas stays at Aswan Harbour overnight Monday which isn’t very interesting and difficult to escape from. I suggest seeing Aswan sights on that day, especially those nearby, e.g. High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk, Nubia Museum with a local tour company (we used Memphis Tours) and get delivered to the cruise around 5pm (or even later) where Prince Abbas staff will escort you by tender to the ship. I realised this when we arrived on board but another couple we met had been more organised and that’s what they did. They let the ship know, missed lunch but were given sandwiches and fruit in their cabin to make up for it and had an extra day in Aswan.

This immense lake (one of the largest artificial lakes in the world), is located 300 km from Aswan on the border with Sudan. I went there just to see the beautiful Abu Simbel Temple, which is located on its banks. The scenery around it is beautiful, although desert.

Artificial lake built in the middle of the desert thanks to the dam of the same name, full of crocodiles, it even reaches Sudan. Ideal navigable for docking the cruise ship to the Abu Simbel Temple.

We took a 3-day lake cruise aboard the Movenpick. The banks are full of temples and tombs that were moved from their original locations due to the filling of the lake. The ride was very good, although quite tiring due to the extremely high heat. But it was worth it

Fantastic and still so intact. Wonderful. We took a cruise with Steven Mayor's Lake Nasser Adventure organization. It was great and the cruise was truly unique due to the beauty of the places we traveled between Assoun and Abu Simbel. An exceptional adventure, very good cuisine on board and a very friendly crew. We were privileged. THANKS
