This is a zoo. Very small cages in which most animals seem to be hurt (not old wounds, but due to inappropiate housing). Several empty cages. Little explanation on species and origin of the animals. This was the worst activity during our stay in Kenya - definitely not worth the money.

I dont know how to rate this place - it was cool to see a lot of animals up close, and I think they are sticking to their mission of keeping abandoned animal, that they release in the wild when they can, and old/lame animals who were not able to be released.
However - watch out for the guards - they will aggressively try to get a tip by having you do things like feed the animals. I went along with it because I wasn't prepared to be on my defenses, but i wish I hadn't - they are clearly violating the rules to make a tip, and are pretty pushy about it.
There is another section where the animals are not in such small cages, a little more wild, but we only went to the smaller section where the animals are up close.
Instead of going on a group tour, a local friend recommended we hire a driver for the day.
We lucked upon an uber driver we liked the night before, so we asked him to drive us around for the day, and it turned out that he'd done an internship here and knew everything about the local animals and ecology. He took us to several places throughout the day for a very low fee, including selecting a delicious restaurant.
I can't recommend him enough - one of the loveliest people I've ever met - so if you need a driver or someone to take you around to the giraffe center, parks, museums, airport rides, whatever you want to do for the day, you should give him a text: Antony at +254 711 585094

This is a zoo, with animals kept in cages smaller than European zoos. I appreciate that these animals would have died if they had not been rescued, but they need to be kept in better conditions. On the plus side, the animals were well-fed (but a number of the big cats were obviously overfed).
I can see that this is a good place for local school-children to visit, so that they can see some of the wildlife in Kenya. But I would not recommend it for tourists.

I visited Nairobi animal orphanage, which is very close to Nairobi national park entrance. It is a very interesting centre, where you can see: cheetahs, leopard, lions and cubs, African wild dog, stripped hyenas, monkeys. You learn a lot of information about the rescued animals (age, where they were found, their way of life…)
The objective of the centre is to release in the wildness the: 1) adult animals after they have undergone therapy successfully (which is not always possible depending on the severity of injuries); and 2) orphans after they become adult and able to survive alone.
The animals are kept in very healthy conditions, and have parks adapted to them. For example, all big cats have places to hide in the grass and houses (where they can protect against rain if necessary) and the male leopard has also a tree where he can climb.
The work of the keepers and the veterinary is crucial for wild animal survival and re-introduction in the wildness. When you’ll come in Nairobi, I highly recommend to visit the center and to support them in continuing their fantastic work.

The place is completely run down and absolutely not worth any Shilling. Half of the cages are empty and the ones which occupied are in bad conditions.

It seems to be fairly well run and the animals would have died if not looked after at this place. The orphanage hosts lions, cheetahs, various monkeys, etc. It takes care of not a huge variety. Giraffe centre is by far amazing.

Not worth the expensive entry fee. Costs less to visit good zoos in the UK. Save your $ and pay for entry to the Nairobi national park instead

I went to this to get closer to the animals. Was deciding between this and the safari walk and ended up doing both. This was overpriced and was basically a zoo for rescued animals. Animals were in cages and little room to move around. Disappointing

Hi friends, i am planning to visit nairobi national park next month alone..i am a non-resident surely...please advice me how & what time i need to be there for possible cat interaction for a tip extra is fine with me...i just want to experience the feeding the cats option etc...is it all inside the safari walk or the orphanage? cheers.....
Skrevet 13. august 2016
Hi, never heard of feeding the cats; over 30 years that I have been to the orphange and since the time Safari Walk was started. You can take a picture with the cats, at least you could 10 years ago at the orphanage. Though I think they have become quite strict now. So this would be unlikely as well. Doesn't matter if you are a resident or non-resident. Wildlife Animal protection laws are now enforced.
If you are looking for a picture and to touch the cats, i suggest going to Thailand. They have a Tiger zone in Phuket. Its well marketed.
Its quite sad though that these animals are treated that way including the cubs. One would think its a petting farm.
If you want Wildlife...Kenya is the place. If you want tame cats to pet... then one of the Asian countries would be best.
We are doing our best in Kenya to protect the natural way of life for these animals. So even in the Safari Walk and animal orphanage, human contact is limited. Sorry this isn't the answer you were looking for. However, i wouldn't want to spoil your travel if you are expecting more, another country maybe more suitable and more to your liking.

Is there a specific time of day to go if you want to interact with the animals? How do you make reservations to do so?
Skrevet 26. juli 2016
It was $25 US for non residents. I don't know how much for locals. The plus side is they know the non-locals and do special things like let you feed the animals. . . for a tip of course. That part is worth it.
