Amazing for visitors who want to get unique kenyan souvenirs. My clients were very happy visiting the place for the first time

City market is in a former hangar on Muindi Mbingu street not far from Jamia mosque. In the hall, where once airplanes were parked and repaired, now are stalls offering different kinds of merchandise.

Souvenirs and handicrafts are the main goods for sale, but flowers, vegetables and meat are there as well. Perhaps a bit chaotic as there are no clear sections.

Difficult to walk around to just look at what is on offer, as especially the souvenir vendors try to make eye contact all the time and strike up conversation.

After spending 2 weeks in Kenya I was after some souvenirs to take home, particularly some art. The City Market is a permanent market in the city centre and was a 5min walk from where we were staying. The sellers are obviously trying to encourage you into their stalls but you can choose where to stop and looking is free. I found the sellers to be pleasant and we had some fun while also driving a bargain. Kenya can be an intimating place if you're not used to their ways so it's good to get a feel for the place before going to the market. You almost always only pay 1/4 or less of what the asking price is so ask the sellers for their price and start way lower and work to a price you feel happy with. They are happy to talk and bargain. I have to say after reading some negative reviews I was pleasantly surprised.. we were asked to visit stalls but politely declined and kept going and weren't followed or further hassled. This is how they make their living so can't blame them for trying! The market is quite small so you won't need much time but has all the essentials for a good souvenir hall.

I really like this place for buying souvenirs. If you are in town and there’s no daily Maasai market, you can always shop here. Would be annoyed by sellers trying to sell you their stuff but once you find your shop and bargain you will get lots of things with fair prices.

I don’t fully understand all the negative reviews. Either these people never really travelled in such places or are too soft. I consider myself to be extremely cautious and suspicious (maybe even too much), but there everything was just fine. Of course, one shouldn’t probably wear anything expensive and unecessary with you, and take good care of phone/money (that applies for any place though), but people are friendly, funny to talk with and if you are ok with bargaining you can get fair prices. Obviously, everyone will try to convince you to buy at their place (in the end its their living), but are not aggresive if you don’t want to buy anything. Just be polite and they will be as well :).
Hint: Prices are waaay cheaper than anywhere on your way to safari.

the place is good for souvenirs, but there are too many local people who try to help you, even if you do not want it, and you must negotiate prices

The Nairobi City Market is a collection of individual stalls, all selling trinkets geared toward the tourist trade. The vendors are friendly and not overly aggresive in their sales pitches. Of the most interest is the building itself, which is an old airplane hanger, dating from te early ddays of aviation.

The relatively small market is divided in different parts : meat - flowers- souvenirs/handycraft ! The souvenir vendors will push you to buy all kind of rubbish , but you will hardly find anything worth buying...

Lots of shops and people are friendly. Typical Kenyan items although we send better quality out on safari. We felt safe. One side is for tourists the other side is for food/produce for locals. Not really worth taking the time to search out. We had some time to kill and didn't want to spend a lot of money on other tours. You can walk there from most of central Nairobi. It's close to a large mosque which is a good landmark, but not very architecturally interesting.
