I had a great time learning about chinese tea. It was set in a nice apartment which was really big and perfectly laid out for the next 2 hours.

We sat at a nice big table, discussed the tea with the help of Yuhua translating the teacher. We talked loads, me and my friends asked lots of questions and we learnt, drank and poured lots of tea.

I would reccomend to do this if your interested in tea, learning about the health benefits or want to do something cultural in Beijing.

Yuhua is lovely and passionate about her experiences. She was great at setting the tone by asking us to close our eyes and she gave a calming speech to make me and my immature mates relax.

The teacher and her husband were very welcoming to their beautiful apartment. The husband joined in drinking tea and we were given so many gifts.

Fantastic evening, give it a try!

As first time tourists to China, we found this experience to be very educational. Fascinated by the Hutongs and life within, customs, medicine, culture. Highly recommend.

I have been living in China for a year and the Hutongs have always fascinated me. I have seen a couple of movies about the life in Hutongs, 剃头匠 or the Old Barber being the most memorable. When I got an opportunity to experience life in the Hutongs through Beijing Way’s “Explore Ancient Chinese Architecture & Meet its People”, I jumped right in.
I learnt that Yuhua has undertaken many years of painstaking research to put this experience together. This reflects in the kind pearls of wisdom one can takeaway from this experience.
I was introduced to the nuances of architecture in the Hutongs by visiting a courtyard house (四合院). From every pillar to every stone, Yuhua explained to me the architectural and cultural significance of each part of the house. Yuhua wouldn't stop just there. Through miniature wooden models (which I got to play with), she explained to me the intricacies of the architecture of even bigger buildings. Among the various facets, the ceiling murals in the houses of old Beijing (老北京) were quite a discovery for me.
It is the resident that gives an architecture its soul. I got a deep insight into the life and experiences of the people who live in the Hutongs, stories of their struggles and successes. Freewheeling conversations and warm hospitality marked these interactions.
At the end of the day, I can confidently say that after this immersion in the Hutongs, I have been able to understand Being a little better, China a little better and the story of the Chinese people a little better.
Anyone who is remotely interested in Beijing and its Hutongs, must definitely go for this. It will be an experience you will cherish for a lifetime.

First and foremost, my utmost apologies to Yuhua for this very long delayed review. To sum it all, Yuhua's tour has been one of best travel experiences that I have ever joined, and i have been to Beijing many times and have joined countless tours in the past. Yuhua is very passionate about old Beijing architecture and she has generously shared with us her in-depth knowledge on old Beijing hutongs. I felt so privileged to be invited to the homes of the real people who are staying in all these amazing Prince mansion, princely mansion (lower ranking prince), old courtyard house and their efforts in upholding this slice of Chinese architectural heritage. Mr Zhu, a direct descendant of Mr Zhu Qi Jian, a pioneering contributor and benefactor in defining centuries-old Chinese building practice and architectural system in the context of modernized, westernized China. His great-grand son still stays in this lovingly preserved "四合院Siheyuan" or courtyard house in one of the old Beijing Hutongs. We saw all the amazing old photos of his forebears, including his famously beautiful socialite-aunts, his dapper father and mother in their pre-war wedding finery, former Chinese premier Zhou En Lai etc. Yuhua also took us to one of the best preserved Prince mansions of the first ranking order, the great mansion of the grandson of Ching Dynasty Kangxi Emperior. The princely mansion was rewarded by Emperor Yongzheng to Kangxi Emperor's 13th prince, Prince Yi of the first ranking order after his passing to his nephew, for Prince Yi's brotherly support in Yongzheng's struggle to ascend to the throne and support during Yongzheng's reign. The intricate wood carvings on the high ceiling at the main entrance were truly breathtaking, definitely one of the best kept secrets in Beijing. The visit also took us to Mr Li's Mongolian Princely mansion of lower ranking order amazing abode where the kind and hospitable Mr & Mrs Li regaled us with their Beijing living experience and their efforts in preserving the amazing prince mansion building legacy . Lastly, we were so lucky to visit one the earliest Beijing buildings built based on western architectural discipline by Chinese modernist architect in the early 1900s. So if you are a architectural design fan, Yuhua's tour will be a good match for you. Not your typical "tour group" tour and I have truly enjoyed the tour.

In April 2019 I visited China for the fourth time and it was my best so far thanks to the Beijing Way and its founder, Yuhua.

In addition to the educational and thought-provoking Traditional Chinese Medicine session, I enjoyed a very relaxing massage and a mini-tour of the area with references to both past and present Beijing.

The humane, caring, gentle and attentive touch of Yuhua made it all even better and I couldn't recommend this experience more.

We had an amazing Chinese medicine experience with Yuhua Bi. She gave us an overview of the history of Beijing while we made our way to visit the doctor.
Once at the doctor's office we were greeted with tea, snacks and an informative overview of Traditional Chinese Medicine theory. Then the doctor did individual consultations. It was amazing how accurate she was in her assessments!
After the assessment we were each treated to an amazing body treatment.
The only word I can think of to describe how I felt after is blissful.

I highly recommend the Traditional Chinese Experience.

Yuhua is knowledgeable and passionate about her community and its history. This tour consisted of a short guided walk through a hutong ( traditional neighbourhood) and a visit to a tiny museum, created by the local community and hosted by the charming Mr. Lawanga. He showed us various objects of traditional everyday life ( mostly object from within the last century, but similar to those used for many centuries), explained their purpose, and graciously answered every question, sometimes with amusing personal anecdotes. The more you ask, the more you learn. We also had the opportunity to make a small "artwork" using a somewhat traditional technique. The whole experience is about 4 hours, for 600 yuan. I have not taken her other Beijing Way tour, which would be more interesting for someone mainly interested in the large-scale history of Beijing and how it is reflected in the architecture we can see. But for me, the tiny hutong museum experience was just right, a friendly and fascinating glimpse into the old-time everyday life of ordinary people. Yuhua was also very kind in providing me with a lot of useful information for my days of independent sightseeing in Beijing, and also arranged a good personal driver who took me to visit the Great Wall at Mutianyu on a schedule of my own choosing ( and with no unwanted side trips to shopping etc, which are hard to avoid if you take group bus tours.)

This was a magical experience from beginning to end! Yuhua's incredible knowledge and passion for Beijing history is apparent from the moment of meeting. A historic map and a detailed explanation of all the city features kicks off the day before an informative walk through the hutong area of Golou. What's so lovely is the genuine love Yuhua clearly has for this history, she is so happy to share the culture and to answer as many questions as you can throw at her with insight, passion and humour along the way.Arriving at the smallest hidden hutong museum is like stepping into a treasure trove, Packed to the rafters with ancient chinese antiques, it's a feast for the senses. I couldn't help but feel like a child again surrounded by such a kaleidoscope of goodies. And the highlight is Mr Wang himself, who is the friendliest and most welcoming director of the museum. We were served hot tea on arrival & presented with an amazing array of old objects to explore, handle and guess their original use (which is a really fun game!) I learnt so much about the Beijing peoples way of life. Having lived in Beijing for nearly 2 years this was particularly fascinating to me; never would I have known so much if it weren't for Yuhua and Mr Wang on this fantastic tour. Yuhua also provided a wonderful paint rolling/print experience on rice paper at the museum which I was able to take home - such a great souvenir! And after sharing some traditional Beijing sweets with us, we then had the chance to dress up in traditional chinese clothes & perform hilarious role play with Mr Wang, who is full of charisma and warmth. And just when I thought the experience couldn't get any more fantastic, Yuhua presented us with a gift of The Beijing Way tea box to take home. This is a truly intimate, thoughtful and informative experience, in addition to being so much fun. Yuhua makes you feel so welcome and relaxed, her warmth of personality and love for the history of Beijing is contagious. I will recommend The Beijing Way to everyone I know - it really is a special experience and one not to be missed! Thank you so much to Yuhua - she truly is the best!

Bi led us on a wonderful journey to discover old & new Beijing. We started at an old Prince’s residence where we learned about imperial life, Beijing gates, temple design, town planning through the stories of a photographer & an old Beijing family whose courtyard house we visited. We learned about the impact of the cultural revolution on everyday people. Our tour finished with lunch at a local community restaurant where Bi was able to explain everything we were eating! Bi is a wonderful guide full of knowledge & energy. She has excellent English. If you do one tour do this one! Do it early in your stay so you know what you are looking at. Great for small groups including families with teenagers.

My Mum and I were in Beijing for 3 days and had both been previously and were looking for something a little different. So pleased we found and used Beijing Way. Yuhua is absolutely lovely, so helpful and kind and sch a fountain of knowledge. We did two trips with her, art and architecture which explores the hidden side of some of Beijing;s hutongs, was incredible and provided access to places you just wouldn't have know about or been able to access without her knowledge as well as the invaluable opportunity to meet and chat with locals. We also did the health experience which was also highly recommended, wonderful service and would have done more had we been in Being for longer. Really cannot recommend highly enough!
