Day 5-Janikou - The most dangerous part of the Great wall of China.
We left before dawn, and as we looked ahead, we could see this wall on top of the mountain, and there was an eerie feeling around us. It made me think twice about this trek, but I was still determined to see what it was all about.
The most steep part of the Great Wall is wild, weathered and primitive. This part of the wall was built on ridges with cliffs on each side on each side which makes it one of the most dangerous sections. On this trek, I had Woodie, an experienced climber, make it clear before we left the farmhouse that this section of the wall was the most dangerous of the entire 21,000 km length of the wall. It's only recommended for professionals, sure-footed and experienced mountain hikers. Tourists under the age of 18 and seniors over the age of 60 should never attempt to climb this wall since it is craggy and unrepaired, and many a climber has fallen to their death or received severe bodily injury.
I had viewed a few videos before I departed for China, and this wall sent shivers down my spine. I still thought it was challenging and a must-do. It had rained heavily the day before, and the hike was cancelled. Once again, today was no exception; an overcast day with showers was predicted. The first six hour walk was through a wild forest, a place of serene beauty, and uphill. We could see the wall at a distance, and it looked terrifying! We had to scale four walls before we got to what is known as " the eagle flies upward" since it was a 90%vertical climb.
I arrived at what is known as "Eagle flies facing upward" since even for an eagle, it is impossible to fly over the steep wall. I had one look at this wall and decided against it. Instead, I took a detour and joined the trail that would ultimately lead me to Mutianyu.

I would seriously highly recommend Jiankou Great Wall if you want to see a more genuine, unrestored section. It is relatively straightforward to get to (simply take the bus towards Mutianyu as far as Huairou then switch to the local bus H36 to Xizhazi Village (IMPORTANT: Not Jiankou Village as marked on Google Maps, this is the other side which is much steeper and more confusing - tried this route last year, got really lost and nearly fell off a cliff face...). Once you're off the bus, the path to the wall is tucked behind a row of houses - ask a local for directions if you're unsure. It's about an hour's walk through the woods to get to the Great Wall. The wall is absolutely stunning, you can see the trees growing up through the centre and lots of really picturesque spots (perfect for the Instagram haha!). Turn left when you get to the wall and it's about a three hour walk to Mutianyu. The path is challenging but not too hard - we were two young 20-somethings and did it in trainers, don't wear sandals/ heels! I'd only do this in good weather though, one part was REALLY steep and slippery, would definitely not be safe in winter. Once you reach Mutianyu, it's just a downhill walk through the restored section (maybe around an hour) to the exit, where you can then easily get buses back into Beijing.

We are a family of 6 and we hiked from Mutianyu to Jianku in December with Jonny as our guide. Jonny answered quickly to our emails and the hike was promptly organized. He picked us up punctually in the hotel and we stopped for a delicious breakfast in a local restaurant near Mutianyu. We took the cable car to the wall and started hiking west toward Jianku while Jonny told us about the history and the construction of the wall. At first it was pretty cold, but as we started hiking up the wall, we were all warm enough! Past the renovated part from Mutianyu, the top of the wall is more like a path with lose stones and vegetation and we were the only ones hiking. The sun was shining and we had a wonderful and clear view on the wall winding through the mountains as far as the eye can see. There was a little snow to make the whole thing even more beautiful and it was still very practicable. Jonny took a lot of pictures of us, we had enough time to admire the landscape and we all had a wonderful time. The driver was waiting for us in the village at the bottom of the wall in Jianku and drove us back to the hotel.
We would highly recommend this tour in a beautiful nature. Winter proved to be a very good time to visit, with less tourists and a very clear view. We would also highly recommend Jonny as a very sympathetic and reliable guide who speaks very good english. He took care of every practical details and everything ran smoothly. We could just enjoy the view and did not have to worry about timing, route, trips to and from the wall or anything. Thank you Jonny!
PM me for his contact information but he is on hotmail under jonnyzhangcn

Was liked up at airport by Edward my personal guide. I asked him to keep a couple promises. we drove to the Jiankou area and we were the only ones up or down on this lonely trail climbing and climbing. I began to realize this was a mountain..lol.. Edward must have been a Billygoat cause he just moved up without effort...it inspired me to keep moving. When we reached the top an actual climb over was required to get on top of the wall. Edward kept his promise... No tourists and a short video record of the great experience

We did a hike from Mutianyu to Jiankou with Johnny. He picked us up from the airport and safely brought us to the Great Wall. Even though there was fresh snow on the road and many accidents had occurred we never felt unsafe. He told us a lot about Beijing and the Great Wall and knew the best spots to take photos.
We had an absolutely amazing day!
After our hike he took us back to the airport and walked us through a quick entry that saved us some time!
I can recommend!!

Very steep walk up to the cable car bu there is a lift for the very last part of the climb. Would not like to try this visit in the warmer months. Unbelievable sights and will never forget. Lots of people but nobody appeared to bother if people were struggling with the climb. There is a small cafe close to the car park which served very welcoming hot chocolate. Inside the cafe there is also a small subway to purchase sandwiches. A once in a lifetime visit.

I would like to go at end august w 2 teenage boys. I have done it 3 times w a local friend but this time would like a private guide. Last year in august i needed to abort because it was too slippery and too much high vegetation. Any thoughts and offers for august 27?

How crowded is it on weekends?
I am in somewhat of a time crunch and was planning on hiring a driver and doing a day trip from Jiankou to Mutianyu. I can do it on a Monday, but that is not ideal and would leave me pressed for time. However, since it is the high season I am leaving that option open.
Thanks!
Skrevet 8. juli 2018
That area is usually packed with people especially weekends. However the crowd won't affect anything. I have visited that place only thrice and there were plenty people each time. Jiankou to Mutianyu is about 10km but the volume of people will not deter you from enjoying.

I went there during autumn and a weekend. Jiankou is not a repaired part of the wall and requires a little bit of experience of hiking and climbing.
I don't think it's going to be crowded. Just be sure to start on the Jiankou part. Mutianyu is a touristic hotspot.

Is there a tour I could book as a single traveler for this section of the wall?
Skrevet 24. oktober 2016
You can try Beijing Walking +86 13581665548. We used Leo to take us to JianKou and hike to Mutainyu. You can also do it as an unguided tour. Reasonable price and provides transportation from Beijing.

I have a layover at PEK from 2pm touchdown until 10am take off the following day. Is this a sufficient amount of time to get to the wall? See the wall? anything wall related? I've considered hiring a driver simply to go there and back just to take advantage of my time in Beijing. If anyone has suggestions on a workable way to squeeze this into a tight schedule, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Skrevet 18. oktober 2016
It can be, depending on what form of transportation you can manage to arrange for the trip to the wall. Once st the wall you will want to spend a minimum 2 hours there.
Have fun!
