We had a great time at Shilingxia Gorge (RMB68, opens 7:30am) and the UFO glass platform (RMB40) during a cool sunny day.
You can take the 2hr bus journey from Beijing or stay at the many simple village accommodations near the Gorge entrance so that you could start your day early to visit Shilinxia, Jindong Karst Caves and Tianyun mountain (with another glass bridge) all in the vincinity.
We decided to trek up along the stream (all paved paths), taking in the beautiful sights along the way. There was a direct stairway route up to the glass platform from the entrance but I imagine it would be quite a torturous climb and missing out a bigger part of the beautiful gorge. We spent about 4 1/2 hours there (leisurely, without cable car).
You can choose to take the cable car up (RMB100 each way). However, it would only bring you about 3/4 way up the mountain and one would still need to climb flights of stairs the rest of the way up.
Getting there by bus:
If you are versed in the Chinese language, you could download the 高德地图 or Baidu map app (Chinese equivalent to Google map, with get clear instructions how to get to your destinations.
From Beijing, go to the Dongzhimen subway station and follow the signs to the "bus transfer hall" (Long-Distance BusHub). Take bus 852 (RMB15) to Pinggu district (1hr15m). Alight at Pinggu Hospital or any stop along this road. Then take either bus 25 or 38 to Shilinxia 石林峡 (RMB5, 40min). Buses and routes are all listed on the bus-stops (in Chinese).

Go to the Dongzhimen Bus Depot, it's across the road from the subway station. Take the number 852 bus all the way until it terminates at Ping Gu Qi Che Zhan, about an hour. We took a taxi from there to the resort, another 30 minutes, but I've been told the number 25 bus goes to it, look for 石林峡 on the bus schedules. I'd also suggest checking the pollution levels because if they're high, the visibility will be poor.
There are fairground rides for kids and food stalls. The scenery is spectacular. You take a cable car up most of the way then have a very punishing 30 minute walk to the top of the platform. If you're not used to walking or are overweight, you're going to struggle. Looking through the glass would have been more exhilarating had it been clean but, nonetheless, the views are spectacular and I'm sure you'll remember the trip for the rest of your life.
As we took a taxi, we didn't know where the bus stop was but, fortunately, when we flagged down the driver, he stopped outside the resort. We went back to Ping Gu Qi Che Zhan then took the 852 to Dongzhimen.

Yet another glass panel bottom in China which is not too far from Beijing. The journey to the attraction take about 3 hours using subway and bus.
We decided to climb up the mountain as the cable car for both way are about $200 rmb. It took about 1.5 hour to reach the top. It was tiring but it was all worthwhile for the climb. The scenery was breathtaking and the walk around the disk is thrilling as it was suspended by cable. It did swing abit when you walk.

It is spectacular view from the platform. Great place to visit, less crowded than Great wall or Palace museum. However, you must prepare yourself to walk and climb. We went to easy path with walking up flat path for 50 min then climb up stairs to reach second cable car and go up to platform. Chose to walk down stairs to reach first cable car to take us down to the car park area.

There are two ways of reaching the UFO glass bridge in Shilinxia valley. One option is to take the cable car and then climb uphill for about an hour. This can be a strenuous route for those with knee problems and heart issues. The other alternative is a hour long trek from the valley floor (the parking lot) towards the rear side of the mountain. This route has been made convenient for travellers and families with many options to take rest and proceed. Small streams, squirrels and birds can be observed along the way. There is a 150 step climb which can be easily covered even by the infirm to reach a second cable car, that takes you to the base of the UFO glass bridge. After a short climb, you are at the bridge and take in the majestic views from top. Since we visited in November, the footfalls were low and we could enjoy the place well. The return route was much easier taking the steep steps down and the cable car to the base.

We came here with a school PTA on the Saturday. The UFO platform was closed, with no reasons explained. The cable car is really out of date, we took it up. 100 CNY one way per person. Steps are narrow. Some areas are actually dangerous. There are few restaurants at the bottom, though you could find ratings only in china analogue of tripadvisor. We had a good meal and bought some locally grown fruits nearby. Nice trip for a Saturday day out, but not more. If you are exploring Beijing on short trip - I will give it a miss. If you really like climbing than this is your place ;)

There is a lot of hype about this place. But apart from the logistics (2 hours drive + 90 mins walk up to the top of the mountain where the glass UFO is located), the real downside is the crowds. It won't be a gentle or peaceful walk. You will be in a long shuffling queue for much of the time. Thankfully smoking is not allowed (primarily because of the fire hazard), but the noise levels are high as your fellow travellers shout and scream to each other across the mountains. Some of the paths are extremely steep - with steps - yet the people are not ready for this and accidents are likely. The Glass platform is a rush job - you can go round once for your money with security guards keeping things moving. There are other trails in the area, but they were all closed (for no obvious reason and no one could explain why) when I visited.

Is this place open in January? I am going to Beijing China for 5 days starting January 4th 2018 and I really wanted to see this platform but I am not sure if it’s open in winter
Skrevet 21. desember 2017
I would imagine it would be open BUT it would be an extremely difficult walk to the top if it was wet or snowing! I personally wouldn’t waste a day going there. There are plenty of other things to see in Beijing!

Is it possible to go around mid December? Will it be too cold or wet?
