The China History section in this huge museum is what worthy visiting. The exhibition literally has the top notch artefacts from the entire Chinese history, which is a feast for museum/history/art lovers.
However, it will take some effort to get in:
- The museum is free for admission, which means it is very difficult to book the free ticket. Try oversea booking agent and do not plan a visit on Sat/Sunday/public holiday (The museum is closed on Monday).
- Due to the proximity to Tian'anmen square, you need to go through a few hurdles of security check. Expect passport check at any junctions going towards Tian'anmen square. The easiest way to get to the museum is from the north entrance, which is close to the metro station.
- Half day is enough for the China History section. An afternoon entrance could avoid some morning crowd
Nowadays everyone needs to book a reservation to go into Tian'anmen square. The advantage of holding the ticket of the museum is that you can exit from west entrance after the musuem and go into Tian'anmen square without a separate reservation for Tian'anmen square.

Very interesting. It's hard to get a ticket to see the permanent section of the museum. But it is very worthwhile to learn more about Chinese history.

A very big museum to embark on your trip to China! So much rich history to see inside its four floors. There are so many exhibitions that you can stay for a day and not be able to read all of the descriptions. Very awesome :)

This is one of the best national museums in the world, at par with the Smithsonian in DC or the British museum in London. I highly recommend the Science & Technology exhibit and the Road of Rejuvenation exhibit on the 2nd level is a must see, if you want to understand China's recent history and its re-emergence as a world power.

First of all, for those who claim this museum is only for Chinese and not for foreigners, they are LYING! I hold a New Zealand passport and had no trouble getting in. On the day of my visit, there was also a large group of German tourists in the museum. You just need to book in advance. If someone has lived in China for several years and still doesn't know how to use WeChat to book a ticket, then I’m sorry, but it’s not the museum's fault that you’re not bright.
Now, why did I only give this museum 3 stars? Because it's free! What I found is that many museums in China are free, and that creates a big issue. You’ll find lots of people who shouldn’t be in the museum because they show no interest in the exhibits or don’t know how to behave—pushing, speaking loudly, using flash photography. The consequence of free entrance is that many Chinese museums have turned into markets! The National Museum of China has a lot of interesting and historically significant pieces on display, and it's a shame that a museum lover like me couldn’t enjoy these pieces in peace.

Museum itself was great, we had the opportunity to see lots of treasures and learn the culture and history of China, it was very educational for children, but it is Massive! I guess for a big country to put everything in it's going to be massive, we all had vry soe feet after a full day walking.

If you like museums, this is a must see. Four floors so it can be half day trip. There is no cost but reservations are required. There are cafes inside for sandwiches at a reasonable price. The gift shops, one on every floor based on exhibits, also seemed reasonably priced.

Disgusting. To visit the museum you need to register in advance. If I had known how everything works here, I would never have bought a visa to this country.
Don’t waste your money, time and nerves, don’t go to this country, they don’t want to see tourists:
1. You cannot visit attractions without an appointment or without a guide.
2. no signs in any language other than Chinese
3.they constantly check your passport in the hope that something will change there (probably lol).
4.none of them speak any language other than Chinese. They are not aware that English is an international language.
China is a test case for North Korea. Or a demo version of the Soviet Union. Modern Russia is much more attractive than China.

The museum is not closed to foreigners — you will just need to register for free tickets via WeChat (or get your hotel to do it for you) and bring your passports. Fair warning though that you will need to pass through 2-3 security checkpoints getting into the Tiananmen area and then to the museum. Leave yourself plenty of time before your registered time slot to clear these checkpoints!
The museum itself is huge and there’s plenty to see. English translations are available but not for every single description. Nonetheless, a good way to spend a couple of hours indoors in Beijing!

I went to Beijing this year in April and the Museum was closed, but no one seemed to know why? I am going back to China next year (in April again) and was wondering if there is a high risk of it happening again? As I would really like to get a chance to look around whilst I'm in Beijing.

Check its website for any advanced announcement, or ask your travel agency for updates. With its prominent location and status, I wonder if its closing sometime coincides with important occasions happening around or State visits of foreign dignitaries??. Good luck next time.

I have MS and limited mobility. Are there wheelchairs for visitors who need them? and is the line to get in long?
Skrevet 10. oktober 2018
Would recommend to go to the entrance on the right as it tends to be quicker. Easily accessible inside, lots of elevators and flat surfaces, wheelchairs are available.

Buon viaggio!

Absolutely. There are no photo restrictions in the National Museum of China

I agree with the previous poster, FYL003. When I went there I was on my own. I picked up one of the museum maps and figured out what I wanted to see. The place is MASSIVE, so plan on spending several hours if you want to see it all. It is tedious to enter as there are several layers of security, but it is well worth the effort!
