Took our toddler here and didn't really find it suitable for a 2 year old, would have been better if he had been older. Also, I was given a pass in English to use all the games but it didn't work but my husband's Chinese one worked. So pretty useless for me and all my son was bothered about was pressing buttons.

Its a very interactive, modern and english friendly place. The building is not big, but the exhibits are fun, interactive, and explorable. My 12, 10, 8 and 6 had a great time here. This is one of 2 places in beijing where we spend hours exploring and they didnt complain a word. They love it.

I went with a group of Children and they loved it. Children around Kindergarten age would enjoy it most.

This is a great hands-on museum for kids. For a very afforable price of only 60 RMB for one adult and two kids, we had two solid hours of entertainment and even some learning! Upon entering the museum guests receive a badge that they then use to activate the different exhibits. English speakers get a badge that shows the information in English, which was nice, although there were a few exhibits where it still showed us only Chinese. Exhibits were very interactive and hands on, much to the delight of the kids (aged 6-10) we were traveling with. Younger children, say under 4, might struggle with not being tall enough or big enough to reach some of the exhibits, however. Some favorites were making an animated character of yourself, making a movie using green screen technology, the many exhibits which played on the way your eyes can play tricks on your mind, and a fun exhibit that showed how just a very few moving dots can make a coherent picture to our amazing brains. There were Western toilets in at least one of the bathrooms. There was a small cafe but I didn't get a chance to see what was available. And best of all, admission to Chaoyang Park is included so if you still have energy you can explore other attractions in the park or stroll its shady paths.

Visited with my daughter who is 8 yo. It was our first visit to Chaoyng park area. Sony explora has a separate ticket window at the south gate of the park. We we told that if we buy the ticket to Sony place, there is no need to buy a separate park entrance ticket which costs 5 yuan. Unfortunately the Sony explora counter was not attended by anyone though seemed open. After waiting for about 10 min We ended up purchasing the park ticket and then purchased Sony ticket at their thicken counter.

Overall, my daughter enjoyed hands-on experience though not all items were functioning. Worth a trip and good way to introduce concepts of light and refraction.

We go to this science centre regularly since we live so close. After every visit my 2 year old asks to go back. Originally I thought it would be too old for him but there is definitely more than enough to entertain him for over an hour.

The exhibits on light and sound are really interesting. There is always a show taking place but we skip that as it's all in Chinese. And it means we get to explore the animation section without having our toes stepped on by thousands of other young kids.

At the beginning of the exhibits you get to take a photo of yourself which is printed and given to you at the end.

You pay 30rmb at the park entrance and that's only for 1.2m and above so my child always gets in for free.

The Sony ExploraScience is a hands-on science education play and learn centre, for want of a better description. I think it is particularly suited to young children but may also appeal to some older ones and the young-at-heart as well. It is definitely not suited to very young children, in my opinion. When I bought my ticket, the girl told me it would be busy because of school groups (at least I guessed as much). Indeed, having entered Chaoyang Park - which is included in the price of the ticket from the Sony booth outside the south gate - and walked the short distance to the building it was clear that there were large school parties eating picnics outside. I didn't know it then, but they had yet to enter!

Once inside you are asked to 'register' - write down your name - so that you can get a free 'picture ticket' printed off before you leave. You are given a smart-card which is used to take your photo before you start the tour and then used to access instructions to exhibits on monitors throughout. It is meant to be a walk-through experience with different themes but they didn't seem too concerned about us back-tracking a few times (though they did radio through to security to let them know what we were doing). There are some scheduled 'live' shows, in Chinese only, in the downstairs theatre space - unfortunately this completely cuts off your passage if you time it wrong; hence, some of our backtracking. This was when the schoolkids came in.

The first lot of kids we saw were very young, pre-schoolers 3 or maybe 4 years old at most. They obviously enjoyed the live talk from the 'professor' and a few of the general things on show that could be demonstrated by an adult, but they were far too young to begin to appreciate the science or be capable of interacting with many of the exhibits. I was accompanied by my 5 year-old. Believe me, a year or two makes a big difference to the experience to be had. Later, we saw a different party of primary-school age kids come in but the older ones seemed more in a hurry to get back outside in the sun or onto the amusements. So, bearing all that in mind, I'd suggest 5-8 year-olds would probably get the most out of this place.

The exhibits themselves were well-maintained, some more interesting than others, with the odd one or two that I wasn't quite sure about despite the instructions. Nevertheless, we had a very good couple of hours or more trying the different 'experiments' involving light, colour and sound, and were probably fortunate that the school parties left quite quickly and we ended up having the place largely to ourselves otherwise. As such, we could choose to do everything whenever and go back for seconds or thirds or more! The staff were attentive and one young lady was especially helpful (with pretty good English to boot) and seemed to enjoy playing and joining in the activities with us.

All things considered, it was a thoroughly enjoyable visit with only the odd spanners in the works and it is somewhere that I'd have no hesitation recommending for a visit. Adult entry is currently 30rmb, concessions 20rmb, and it's free for children under 1.2m (and school parties!). Before going I didn't know but ticket sales are used to support rural education programs in China, so a 'feelgood' factor is also included. Note that they close every second Mondays & Tuesdays of the month and every Monday from Dec-Feb and in June and September.
