The Hung Shing Temple is stop (D) on the self-guided Wan Chai Heritage Trail that takes in a number of historical buildings in this area of the city. The temple was built here in 1847. At that time, the temple was on the harbour shoreline. However, with massive land reclamations since then, it is now amongst the busy street screen on Queen's Road East. Opening hours are 9am to 5pm daily.
It is a small but attractive temple with traditional grey brick exterior and decorative murals above the entrance. Do note the large boulders which feature into the side of the facade. This was a typical approach of building around the natural contours of the landscape. The interior is also that of a traditional Chinese temple, you'll see shrines with deities, hanging incense and other items of interest.
You can view all sufficiently in 5-10 minutes if you plan to spend time in this area of the city enjoying the attractions included on the Wan Chai Heritage Trail.

This is probably the easiest temple to visit in Hong Kong because it’s on Queen’s Rd East, the main road running through the centre of Wan Chai. It’s very small so you probably only need 5 - 10 minutes to visit. Entry is free.
From the outside, it is modest and deceptively plain and is wedged in between newer, taller buildings on either side.
Inside, is a different story. It’s a blaze of colours and vivid red and gold. There are numerous statues of gods, offerings of fruit and flowers, smoky incense and highly decorated, colourful red banners and altars. It’s quite beautiful.
Fishermen used to worship Hung Shing at this temple which only makes sense when you realise that the temple used to be right on the shoreline. Astonishing as it is now, when the temple was built in 1847, it was directly across from the sea so Hung Shing was right at hand to protect them from both the ocean and bad weather.
Land reclamation on an incredible scale means that the temple is now land-locked. It constantly surprises me to realise just how much land has been developed in Hong Kong through reclamation. I still have trouble looking at this temple and thinking that everything in front of it, would have been underwater.
In the main hall the most important god is of course Hung Shing but I was more intrigued by Kam Fa, the golden flower goddess who secretly learnt martial arts from her father and became a sort of Robin Hood, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor in the Tang dynasty.
ITINERARY: If you are planning an itinerary, the temple is on the Wan Chai Heritage Trail, a DIY 2hr walking trail. However, it’s easy to just wander Wan Chai. It’s a wonderful mix of old Hong Kong (street markets, old-style wet markets, Tai Yuen ‘Toy’ St) alongside modern Hong Kong (Starstreet precinct and Lee Tung Avenue)

Something to see and respect when your there.
Don’t think about smoke, cars there are Tesla’s.
You can take colourful pictures, but respect the praying peoples.

Quite a small temple in wan chai and one of the oldest on hong kong island The temple colours are quite vibrant the street it is on is very busy so it may not seem as peaceful as other temples.

An interesting attraction to see in Wan Chai is the Hung Shing Temple. This is a Grade I historical building situated along the busy Queen's Road East. Opening hours 9am to 5pm daily.
This temple started off as a simple shrine on top of shoreline rocks directly on the harbour. Later the first temple was constructed here around 1850. Massive land reclamations since that time have resulted in the temple now being in the busy urban and commercial area of Wan Chai while the harbour is now only found much further north.
The temple is dedicated to Hung Shing, the protector of fisherman and sea traders. It is of typical 19h-century Chinese temple architecture, featuring grey brick walls, a simple entrance with a decorative porch and roof. The interior is a simple two hall structure with numerous deity figures, items of worship.
Overall, the Hung Shing Temple is smaller and less impressive than others you may plan to visit around the city. However, it remains interesting and worth a quick look inside if you plan to spend time in the Wanchai area and enjoy seeing buildings of historical value during your travels.

A very nice and simple temple. This temple used to be at the ocean front some times ago. The ocean gave way to modernization and became roads and building. Fishermen and seamen used to come here to pray for their good fortune and safety. Many history are presented.

This was the first temple I visited in Hong Kong. The things that stood out for me were it’s set right on bustling Queens Road East, you can spot the boulders it’s set on, and has an appealing interior.
All good but it’s only really worth visiting if you’re in the area as it’s quite small. Good to take in as part of a visit to this area of Hong Kong.
