Ham Tin Beach is one of four beautiful beaches found along the Tai Long Wan Hiking Trail in the Sai Kung East Country Park. If you are starting from the trailhead at the Sai Wan Pavilion, this is the second beach you will encounter after (1) Sai Wan Beach and before (3) Tai Wan Beach and (4) Tung Wan Beach. All are situated within Tai Long Wan, a large bay on the eastern shore of the country park.
This is a a very beautiful beach that is around 25-30 minute hike past San Wan Beach. Early in the morning it is quiet and during midweek you can find it mostly empty and secluded. By midday Saturday and on public holidays it becomes quiet busy however. Ham Tin Beach is around 300 metres in length, has fine sand and blue water. You'll find a similar hilly countryside backdrop and rocky shorelines flanking both ends. This is basically the same as what you find at the three other beaches at Tai Long Wan.
Ham Tin Beach is very photogenic and a good place for swimming and overnight camping on these fine shores. You'll find public toilets, a couple stores & eateries at the northeast end of the beach. You can also arrange speedboat passage back to Sai Kung pier if you don't plan to hike out of the country park.
Note: If you plan to hike further to the Tai Wan and Tung Wan Beaches, there are no public facilities or stores further on. The is the last place to stock up on drinks or to take a pit stop beach meal before proceeding onward.

This is one of 4 hidden beaches in Hong Kong’s Sai Kung East Country Park. It is an isolated spot, off the beaten track and getting there is a trek. What makes it worth it, is the pristine nature of the beaches and the scenic hiking trails that run along the coastal cliffs. It’s a uniquely beautiful part of Hong Kong.
Ham Tin is the second beach that you come to if you walk in from the Sai Wan Pavilion and will take about 1- 1½ hours. The first part of the walk is paved and is pretty easy and within 30-40 minutes, you will arrive at Sai Wan Beach. After this the walk includes some much steeper stretches but the views as you descend down to the Ham Tin are absolutely worth it.
One of the fun things about visiting Ham Tin is crossing the shallow river via the wonky, ramshackle collection of planks that passes for a bridge. The two Ham Tin restaurant/stores are on the other side and this is a great spot for a simple lunch. You can also hire surfboards and camping gear here and buy tickets for the speedboat back to Sai Kung ($150KHD pp).
GETTING THERE: We started by getting a taxi to the Sai Wan Pavilion, which is an easy and popular starting point. A more challenging option is to walk in via Stage 2 of the MacLehose Trail. Or, if you want to avoid walking, you can simply catch a speedboat to/from Sai Kung both ways. We walked in but caught the speedboat back - an exciting but rocky ride on the open ocean. Most importantly, buy your boat ticket early because seats are limited, esp on a weekend. Boats go from both Sai Wan & Ham Tin beaches but if the weather is too rough or windy, they won’t go at all.
