This is best done as a day (or good part of the day) outing incorporating an easy hike and a visit to this beautiful shell beach with extraordinary rock formations. Its location is away from the city. Take the train to Tai Po Market Station on the East Rail Line. Then, take take Exit A3 to the minibus terminus and board Green Minibus 20K to Sam Mun Tsai. Alight on the final stop -
Sam Mun Tsai New Village. You will a sign near a pavilion pointing you towards Ma Shi Chau Special Area.

The hike starts from Sam Mun Tsai village. There are 2 public toilets in the village before you enter the hiking trail. Good to use them. This is an easy short (around 3 hours covering 6.5 km) beautiful hike in the Ma Shi Chau - a special area located on the coastline of Sam Mun Tsai village. It is one of the major UNESCO’s remaining geo-sites in Hong Kong. Very scenic with a shore covered with sea shells, lots of rock formations, foliage and butterflies. The sea is amazing and views of Pat Sin Leng and Ma On Shan surrounds you. You will pass a cemetery before reaching the tombolo that connects the coastline with Ma Shi Chau. Before entering the hiking area, pay attention to the tide times sign as the tide will affect the tombolo and coastline. When it is high tide, Ma Shi Chau separates from the coastline and becomes an island.

After you visit Ma Shi Chau, you need to retrace your steps to leave the area.

The Ma Shi Chau Special Area consists of 61 hectares of protected land situated near Tai Po and Plover Cove in the Tolo Harbour. It is part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark and is a place to see rare geological rock structures that date back to the Permian period. You will also find interesting ecology and can enjoy a bit of hiking during visits to Ma Shi Chau.

You can reach Ma Shi Chau by way of a short land bridge during low tide southeast of the village area of Beverly Hills in the Tai Po district. During high tide, Ma Shi Chau is actually separate island so be mindful if you are accessing by foot. Alternatively, you can hire kayaks to make your visit. We did this recently, renting from HappySky Water Sports Centre just past Wu Kai Sha Beach in Ma On Shan, then paddling north across the harbour. If you visit by kayak, you can include stops at other interesting places like nearby Centre Island as well.

The most common way to experience Ma Shi Chau is to hike the Nature trail. This is a 1.5 km, in-and-out trail that passes by 9 designated spots along the southern shore to observe impressive sedimentary and volcanic rocks which date back 280 million years. These are extremely rare and very neat to see, particularly if you have interest in geology and being outdoors. Another fun way to enjoy the geological highlights of Ma Shi Chau is by using kayaks to slowly round Ma Shi Chau. This allows you to view the ancient rock structures from the water where you can see the flush green vegetation in the background.

There're two ways to get to Ma Shi Chau. You can either walk from Sam Mun Tsai or take a boat offered by local fishermen at the Sam Mun Tsai pier. If you choose to walk, take note that you'll pass through miles of gravesite before arriving. The hiking trail starts at Sam Mun Tsai village and many people do not know this but there is a small diner that serves beef brisket/ wonton noodles that is frequent by the famous Chow Yun Fat. Once you get to Ma Shi Chau, you'll find a great scenic ocean view onlooking Ma On Shan. At the end of the trail, you'll be delighted by the sight of the relaxing Pat Sin Leng and Plover Cove. You can finish this easy trail in 40 minutes if you walk at a brisk pace without stopping. Awesome place to go if you want to get away from the city.

I will admit, had it not been for Mandy from The Hong Kong Getaway Tour I would have never seen this beautiful gem outside of Hong Kong. Getting here or even knowing about it is half the challenge for visitors such as myself. Once Mandy took me here during my full day private tour, I found out why she brings clients to this side of Hong Kong. If you want to see how Hong Kongers live away from the sky scrappers and when times were simple, this is the place for you.

On a Sunday afternoon, the men played mahjong and the woman poker as children bathed with pups in inflatable rafts on dry land. The nearby fishing village is still recovering from a devastating loss, but they also have learned to adapt to tourism. If you can, hire a fishing boat to take you out onto the water and island hop for a hour or two. This was a unique experience and something my photos captured better than any explanation here. I would highly recommend if you are wanting to see the other side of Hong Kong, this is where I would begin. Simple living, beautiful nature and getting outside the tourism checkbox.
