Enjoyable morning walk and way to start walks up to the Peak
jan. 2023

One of the interesting ways to walk up to the Peak involves the Central Green Trail. This roughly 2km hike begins as the Tramway Path, a walking stretch alongside the Victoria Peak Tram line just south of the Lower Peak Terminus. It ascends upward next to and near the line until you reach Magazine Gap stone arch bridge. There are some spots to stop and take pictures of the Tram, which is interesting now that the new 6th generation trains have arrived and are now in use.

From Magazine Gap bridge you have a couple of path options, I like to make way west to the Old Peak Road which then winds upward until you reach Victoria Gap, the main sightseeing location at Victoria Peak. There are quite a few windows through the trees as you ascend providing views of the Hong Kong Skyline and eventually parts of Victoria Harbour as you proceed upward to higher elevation points.

The walk upward is steep and takes around 45-60 minutes depending on your fitness and how many times you stop for rests or to take pictures. The entire way is on paved road, sidewalk and footpaths so basic tennis shoes are fine. There is a public toilet facility around 60% the way up the Old Peak Road path. You'll find additional facilities at the two malls at Victoria Peak once you finish the walk.

Note: If you still have energy once you are the top, do take the flat and easy Luggard Road walk to the west. There you will find some of the finest views of Victoria Harbour with large panoramic stretches that above the tree lines. These views are amazing and cost you nothing to see compared to the high prices of accessing the viewing deck of the nearby Peak Tower.

Discover this trail by accident and indeed what a lovely find. Most of the paths here are paved properly and pls bring insect repellent.

The view from here is beautiful better than the more we'll known Lugard Rd one. As there are fewer people and you can enjoy the view better!

Do wear proper trainers although the road is paved, it may be slippery if it is wet!

This is one of several walking trails that lets you walk up/down the Peak. If walking is usually on your itinerary somewhere, then an excellent sight-seeing plan is to catch the Peak tram one way and walk the other way.
For a long time I preferred to walk either the Old Peak Rd Trail or the Morning Trail because the Green Trail could be very slippery. For some reason, it seems to get an inordinate amount of moss on the path and it was easy to suddenly lose your footing. However this seems to have improved recently, mainly because they have chopped away a lot of the dense jungle-like growth, letting more sun in and keeping the path drier. Even better, this has also opened up some great views over Hong Kong and Victoria Harbour, making it the most scenic route. I have therefore started enjoying this trail again.
Overall, it is a steep but steady climb. You are walking through native bushland but it is paved the whole way so there is no bush scrambling or rough, dirt tracks. Other than being very steep, it is not a difficult walk. The long zig-zagging path makes it a more gradual and gentler slope than Old Peak Rd Trail.
Be aware, the start of the trail is not immediately obvious and the signs are not always clear. The trailhead starts at 1 Tramway Path, beside the tram lines. Looking upwards towards the Peak, the path will be to the left of the tram lines. Once you’ve started, keep a close eye out for the signs. They are there but they are easy to miss. You are looking for silver plaques that are fixed to the stone walls, labelled ‘Central Green Trail’ (see photo below). About 5 min after you’ve started there will be a sign on your right and you need to turn here to stay on the trail. This is actually the one that’s easiest to miss. After that it’s much more obvious.
You will finally reach a set of stairs alongside a high stone wall which is an old, decrepit tennis court and this brings you to Barker Rd. Turn right and follow the mostly flat road to the Peak Tower.
Allow about anywhere from 40 – 60 minutes depending on how often you walk hills and also on how hot and humid it is. It’s shaded in parts but even so, sunscreen, a hat and water are essentials.

This is one of the paths from the Central District up to Victoria Peak by way of the network of roads and trails that scale up the mountain. This particular route is just under 2km in distance and is gradually steep but like most routes, it is almost entirely paved so easy to walk if you have the time, energy and interest in a bit of exercise in getting to The Peak.

The Central Green Trail starts at 1 Tramway Path basically at the Peak Tram Lower Terminus. It follows the peak tram line until around Magazine Gap and then begins to zigzag its way through flush green mountainside. There are a few gaps in the forest. These clearings offer some nice views of the harbour and skyline as you ascend upwards. The trail eventually makes it to Barker Road, which you walk west until reaching the Peak. While relatively easy to follow, you may want to view the route on the Hiking Trail Hong Kong app, a helpful tool for following local trails in the city, before setting off.

Overall, the Green Trail is pretty good if you want some exercise and fair views on the way up to the Peak. You can also consider taking the Old Peak Road Route or the Lung Fu Shan Morning Trail up to Lugard Road which circles the Peak. These are good ways up as well.

We discovered this trail when we were playing and laundering around Peak Tram station and Hong Kong park. We took a wrong road at the hospital, but it was fun as well. The trail goes through some of old buildings and old tram stations, and can feel greens within the city. It is an easy trail, so you can bring young children. It would be safer to bring water.

If your schedule allows for it and you enjoy walking as we do then hiking along the Central Green Trail is a great thing to do on Hong Kong Island and to escape the crowds. We chose to catch the #15 bus up to Victoria Peak and hike down. The trail starts on Findlay Path which is located near the Peak tram station. The first part of the hike is not particularly interesting or scenic as we walked along Barker Road for ten minutes, the trail deviates left down a set of stairs onto Chatham Path which traverses through a rainforest to Clovelly Path, cross May Road to Brewin Path and across Magazine Gap Road to Tramway Path. The path follows the tramline, which is a great place to be when a tram passes by. Onwards, pass the Peak Tram Kennedy Road Station and head down to Central to continue the exploring. Walking downhill is definitely the easier way to go, roughly 45 minutes. We passed two couples doing the long slow climb.

We took this trail down from Victoria peak. It was a really nice walk. Needless to say one should consider what to wear when doing this. It’s not hard to find ones way the trail is quite clearly marked. It’s a really nice walk.

The walk up is a great alternative to the tram and it does feel very peaceful. You’re alongside the Peak Tram track for a few bits, so some nice spots to catch a photo of a passing tram. Lots of birds and butterflies when we walked it today (November 11th 2018). The signage got a bit confusing up at Severn Road and we went left instead of right, meaning a slightly longer, but no less interesting walk round to the Peak Terminus. We came back down via Old Peak Road which is also pretty.

Not much of a hike - it’s a steep climb so you’ll get your workout. But you’re walking alongside a road or on cement paths or stairs the entire way. There are some great views at the very top and at the Peak (if you can tolerate the tour bus hordes at the end). We beat a quick retreat down the hill by taking the Number 15 bus (about HK$10) to Central. There were some nice views from the upper deck.

ピークの中腹にある散策路です。比較的アップダウンが少なく、自然が楽しめます。展望はあまり開けてないので、写真はイマイチ。ジョギングする人が多く、ぶつかることもあるのですこし注意が必要です。
