A hidden folk museum inside an urban jungle. It’s converted from an old house of the “Hakka” clan. There is also exhibits of other local cultural heritage, worth the travel for anyone interest of local culture and its free.

We made another trip to see this museum which is a renovated southern Chinese walled village which used to be ubiquitous in the area. It's been a few years since we last came but they keep adding to the exhibition, have a introduction video and a few interactive activities for the kids. Really interesting side of H.K. which has all but been lost to modernity. Really worth a trip out from the city centre and especially of interest to locals.

I have been to the Sam Tung Uk Museum a number of times, but I had not been since before the pandemic. In 2023, the museum underwent major refurbishments, and the rooms in the side alleys now feature interactive exhibits on Hong Kong's intangible heritage, such as fabrication of bamboo baskets, puppets for Cantonese opera, tile making (for mahjong, not roof tiles), rice flour biscuits, chinese lanterns etx. all very informative. The only pity is that the previous exhibits of Hakka furniture have been compressed to two rooms in the middle, and the old exhibit of rice cultivation in Hong Kong in the 1950s to 1990s is no longer there.... entry is free

Didn't expect so much to see in such a small area. Will give 5 stars if the indoor space is air-conditioned.

三棟屋是有二百多年歷史的客家圍村,於1981年列為法定古蹟,可以免費入場參觀!當日是平日,基乎沒人參觀,可任意打卡、看展覽和休息。

The Sam Tung Uk Museum is located along Sai Lau Kok Road, around 5 minute walk from the Tsuen Wan MTR Station. This is a 200 year old Hakka walled house and declared monument in Hong Kong (1981) that was restored in 1986-87 and repurposed as a museum and resource centre for preserving and promoting Hakka history, heritage, culture and customs.

The museum and heritage site is open from 10am to 6pm daily (closed on Tuesdays) and is free to visit. It is a quality learning experience and very good use of the former walled house. Within the Sam Tung Uk Museum there are four main inner sections called Dwellings (green colour on the museum brochures) where you can learn about the Lineage of the Chan Clan who lived in these dwellings in the past, Architecture of this Hakka house building, Food and Customs. There is an ancestral hall with a beautiful altar, delightful lanterns are to be seen in both the ancestral and middle hall as well.

Flanking the Dwelling gallery rooms are the Row houses (purple rooms) where exhibits are arranged on the subjects of the local practices of making glass painting, umbrellas, mahjong tiles, iron products, calendars, Chiu Chow Sugar Loaf in traditional manner. There are also exhibits on the subjects of Cantonese style hand puppet opera, instruments, riddle games and the brightly coloured flower board creations commonly seen during important local holidays throughout Hong Kong.

There is quite a bit to see at the Sam Tung Uk Museum. The various gallery rooms make use of modern video, interesting display itemsand concise descriptions. There is a good flow throughout. You can move through the Dwellings and Row House gallery rooms at whatever speed you like. A leisurely visit can last 1+ hours or have a shorter 20-30 minute visit if you are more pressed for time.

In addition to visiting the Sam Tung Uk Museum, you may also want to visit the nearby Jockey Club Tak Wah Park, which makes use of old heritage buildings and is designed in the manner of a walled Hakka village. It is an atmospheric, educational and relaxing public garden. These two attractions in Tsuen Wan complement each other rather well and are worth visiting together if time permits.

This is a fascinating museum set within one of the oldest walled villages in Hong Kong. I'm not usually a museum person and was visiting for a project, but I took the time to read everything - not just for the project but because it was so interesting! It's really cool to learn about the history of that part of the city. The rice exhibition was fantastic, and really made me think about how much people used to work to produce the grain.

They've made a big effort to restore the village authentically, with traditional furniture and historical objects. There's also a hall that contains lots of information about other culturally significant events and processes which was great to see because I learned a lot more than I thought I would. It was great to be able to understand the city's culture more.
