Cool beach, we did the Dragons Back hike to get there, was very rewarding arriving there. Big beach with pretty big waves, but big waves seem to come with a lot of surfers, so the water is pretty crowded.

It’s not the biggest beach ever, nor the cleanest or with best food. But when you rent a surfboard and surf on the waves there, it becomes so much more fun! It’s stinking hot there, so bring sunscreen and go early (before 10AM) to get a spot in the shade! The waves don’t really stand for its name but it’s still good! They are not small waves but they’re not big.

You recently gave a 'Best Beach' Award, but I searched in vain for your assessment criteria. Everyone will probably have certain 'essentials' - for me, apart from sun, sand, and sea, I need a bit of solitude; don't like great whales slavered with sun-tan oil anywhere on my perfect beach ..... or some, er, 'person' on a jet ski shattering the wash of the waves. Hong Kong has many great beaches, but Big Wave Bay mid-week, on a sunny day, arrive early which is easy, and you can almost have it to yourself - perfection.

Went down to Big Wave Beach after hiking Dragon Back. This is a very beautiful beach. My favorite in Hong Kong.
There are toilets, showers and changing rooms on the beach. There is free wi-fi near the showers. But the signal does not reach the beach itself.
There is no cafe here, there is nowhere to eat nearby. If you go towards the bus stop, there will be shops selling ice cream and snacks. They close at 17:00.
The beach is quite quiet, there are not as many people as on other more famous beaches.
I would say that the beach has a spectacular view - green mountains embrace white sand. You get very beautiful photos even in the evening.
To leave here, you need to go to the bus stop. Be careful there is a nearby stop for local buses. To get to the metro station, you need to go to another stop a little further, literally 10 minutes. At the stop there will be a bus schedule to the metro. Also, small red buses go here (they also go to the metro).

Over priced eatery serving Western “junk” food. My toasted ham and cheese sandwich consisted of thick bread with thin slice of ham/cheese which didn’t even reach the edge of the bread! For HKD 55!!! Am iced coffee was HKD$50!!! No denying the view is worth it but your better off taking a picnic and eat in the actual beach or walk 50m up the road to other cheaper and more expansive local eateries which offer both western and local dishes!

I came here via a short easy scenic hike from Siu Sai Wan. The last part of our hike was the descent to Big Wave Bay. It was really scenic and beautiful to see the ocean and the bay together with surfers trying to catch a wave. The sand in the beach was very nice and the beach was not crowded on a weekday. There were less than 15 surfers and swimmers. It’s not a huge bay but it’s good enough. There are a few local cafes and sundry shops open. There’s taxis and buses to take you to the city.

Big Wave Bay is on the Eastern side of Hong Kong Island. The beach here is popular with surfers who take advantage of the larger waves found here compared to the majority of beaches around the city.
The sand quality is pretty good so you can expect to see swimmers and sunbathers as well, especially on weekends and during summer months. Do note that beyond the surfers, Big Wave Bay beach is noticeably less crowded than the larger Shek O beach a couple of kilometres south.
There are basic beach facilities including public toilets, changing rooms, BBQ spots and a few cafes, shops and convenient stores in the area. There is also an important ancient rock carving just past the Lifeguard Station 2 that is estimated to be around 3000 years old. It is worth having a look when visiting Big Wave Bay.
To visit Big Wave Bay Beach, you can take Bus 9 from Shau Kei Wan bus terminus just outside the MTR Station. Buses go to Shek O but some make calls at Big Wave Bay as well. Do check before boarding. You can also take the red minibus (van) between Shau Kei Wan to Shek O, which all make the detour up to Big Wave Bay.
Alternatively, you can hike into the Big Wave Bay Beach area by way of trails leaving from the Chai Wan and Siu Sai Wan area like the Leaping Dragon Trail. You can also combine a visit here with the famous Dragon's Back hike nearby in the Shek O Country Park.

Firstly, don't be lured here by the prospect of monster waves. They are just not that big. It is however a lovely beach with a modest swell and a nice, clean stretch of fine sand. It’s a picturesque spot, lodged between mountains and rocky outcrops.
If you only have a few days in Hong Kong, then you will be too busy seeing the main sights to venture out here. However if you have longer, then combining Big Wave Bay and the popular Dragon's Back Hiking Trail is a brilliant thing to do.
If you do the extended Dragon’s Back Trail (8km), then you will end up here at Big Wave Bay, where you can finish off by jumping in the ocean. It is a great day out and a perfect way to see a whole other side of Hong Kong that most tourists don't get to see.
Probably the nicest thing about this beach is that it is less crowded and less commercial than the popular, nearby Shek O beach. Although there are fewer facilities and places to eat, it still has lifeguards, change-rooms, umbrella and surfboard hire and a couple of small local eateries like Eric’s Kitchen on the water.
It also has one very curious feature – a number of prehistoric rock carvings. Follow the path around the headland, past the lighthouse, and down near the water to find a collection of squiggly, geometric Bronze Age carvings. They were only discovered in 1970 but have been here anywhere from around 3000 years ago.

I ended up here after the long walk from the start of the Dragoon’s Back back in Tei Wan. It was a welcome point to reach after the long rocky walk along the Back of the Dragon. Lovely to dip your feet in the cool South China Sea. The sand is very fine here so would be great for building sand castles. There were some big waves here and lots of surfers. A great beach for everyone. Be careful your kids don’t get dragged out in the currents though as they are strong. Good shower facilities here too.
Number 9 bus goes back to the MTR at Shau Kei Wan and a couple of local mini buses too which are closer and will cost 10HKD

Hi, we can find alot of information about how to get to the Draon's back or to the Big Wave Bay Beach. May i find out how to travel back to Mong Kok from Big Wave Bay Beach?

Hi Nick, from Big wave bay beach you need to walk up a bit to the main road and there you will find mini buses to MTR. From there you can take MTR to mongkok.

in April, you may expect the water to be bit warm. in case you want to swim in cooler waters, try the earlier hours.

Is it easy to get a taxi to take us back from the beach. I have been stuck at a beach (in Spain of all places) & unable to find a taxi

It is not a locale where you would get much passing traffic, but if you rang a taxi one would come from nearby (like Stanley) and pick you up. However, there are lots of buses so getting out will not be a problem
