A truly harrowing and thought provoking museum that showcases the horrors of war and of the massacre. Very well structured to tell the story of the event and the aftermath. Beautifully haunting art and sculptures throughput. Do recommend.

Important visit if you are in Nanjing.
If you can not book on wechat is not a problem, just show up at the ticket office with your passport.

Good balanced view of the war history and the challenges in which masking had faced during this time.
The key message of peace and which history must not be repeated resonates after the visit.

南京大屠杀纪念馆 Nanjing Massacre Museum.
I didn't check about ticketing and admission hours prior to going, my bad. The taxi driver kindly reminded us that last entry is at 430pm and only then it hit me to check for tickets and alas it was fully booked. But we decided to try our luck anyway and lucky we were. They had special allowances for foreigners to enter despite not having pre-registered for a ticket. We just had to go to the manual ticket booth and present our passports for a physical ticket. Free to enter, free audio guide on Wechat too (ie. use own phone).
The museum is built upon the grounds where they found the mass grave, and they've left some parts in tact, meaning you can see the skeletons, more accurately, alot of bones and not complete sets (no photos allowed). A solemn museum, reminded me much of Dachau Camp that I visited in Munich. Mainly documenting the atrocities of WW2 and honouring the heroes who did whatever they can to save whoever they can. A display of photos, videos, testimonies & interviews of survivors and Japanese soldiers too. In general, the entire museum is set in dim lighting, giving it an even darker, depressing vibe. The saddest part is that despite all these memorial sites and museums, humans never learn and wars continue 😔.
We had just over an hour here as they close at 530pm, so had to rush thru a bit, wished I had more time to go thru in greater detail.

First, if you are a foreigner you must bring your passport, there is no entry cost. YOU SHOULD NOT MAKE A RESERVATION, the closest metro station is YUNJINLU.
The museum is in very good condition, safely maintained.
Truly impressive how it was designed and put together so that you can know the pain that the Chinese people went through in that atrocity they experienced. Recommendable.
The walk lasts at least 3 hours.

We didn’t have any Regis and the hotel concierge told us bookings were full. There was an indication that those over 65 need not book. Although my spouse is eligible, I want but we went to the counter and showed our passports and we were both give tickets to go in. It’s free. I like the modern architecture and the use of grey throughout the external building. It was a very informative and well curated place. Even though it was very crowded, everyone behaved with solemnity, respect and spoke quietly. I think there were 4 floors - (2 are more for display of bones and grounds to commemorate the unburied). The main floor is informative with interactive exhibits and one floor is contemporary for peace inspiration art. The outdoor area is spacious and well used too. Allow yourself at least 2 hours there. There’s clean toilets outside and inside the building. I’m glad we got the chance to visit.

I went there with my Chinese boyfriend.
The exhibits are also in Japanese, so you can understand them even if you don't speak Chinese or English. The feeling I got when I actually went to the memorial hall was different.
If you search for "Nanjing Massacre" online, you'll find things like it's a hoax, but it's embarrassing to see Japanese people making a fuss about it being a hoax, even though there were victims, probably because they're Chinese.
Seeing is believing.
As a Japanese person, you should go at least once.

Spacious site and insightful museum!
We struggled for getting the right booking information. When you visit the website of the museum, three options are possible: two of them is at the location of the new memorial site (new museum).
Metro station: Yunjinlu - Exit gate 1
Booking online is only available in Chinese (and you need to install WeChat and scan the QR code). For foreigners, either you book via the Chinese version or you go directly to the ticket office with your passport.
The new museum was full the day of our visit. We then booked for the other option at the same location (not the museum). However, we discovered a number of tickets were available for foreigners at the ticket office. Even if the museum is full, have a try at the ticket office! The queue was for the ones already with a ticket. For those without ticket, go to the ticket office!
We stayed two hours in the museum and we thought we were fast! No time to visit the second part we booked for initially.
The visit was very instructive and emotional! We found the memorial site very spacious and sober with an atmosphere of peace and respect. Worth a visit! The entrance is free but I would definitely have paid for entering.

A very sobering place to visit, with vital reminders of the horrors of war. They do not hold back the punches when it comes to photos, videos and even the mass grave site the memorial is built over.
One caveat: it was incredibly busy when I visited around 9.30am on a Tuesday morning (it's closed on Mondays). I got in quickly - show your passport at the booth and they give you a ticket - but once inside the first couple of exhibition halls were completely rammed to the point where it was hard to read all the information or see the artefacts. It eased up a little bit later on. So be prepared for crowds.

Is the Memorial Open during the Lunar Festival Holidays? Has the Cororanavirus outbreak caused closures of the Memorial and other Cultural sites in Nanjing? Tried checking the website but the link is bad .

Hi! I'm looking for an English speaking tour guide who can give a 1-day guided tour. Looking for a local who is well versed in the history, and can possibly take us to a 'foreigner-friendly' place for lunch.
I have an itinerary in mind, but open to discuss with the guide!

We did Nanjing in a full day and could have used a couple to do even more. That said, we had a great tour guide who was a walking historian and we did a lot in a day, including a wonderful local lunch experience. We booked through Becky rebeccaruan at foxmail com who I highly recommend.

If you want to get there by metro then take the line 2 metro to Yunjin Lu, take exit 2 and it's on your left. If you want to taxi then you want to go to Shuiximen street, Yunjin road intersection. (Shuiximen dajie Yunjin Lu lukou)

Would it be suitable for a 10 year old boy to visit?

Maybe not. It is incredibly grim and focused on death. I have been to Dachau and to the Killing Fields in Cambodia. This place was worse. They make you uncomfortable, it gets under your skin.
