An unexpected hero
okt. 2019 • Par
John Rabe was one of these people whose lives were turned over by being in the wrong place at the wrong time but making the right choices. As a Siemens engineer (and a German, even a nazi) he was in Nanjing at the time of the Japanese invasion. Together with a number of other foreigners from different countries he was instrumental in setting up a safety zone that at one time looked after 250.000 people. His recognition came after he passed away in 1950. His house on the area of Nanjing University is now a small museum that exhibits mainly posters and photos. But is does keep his memory alive, as it should.
It is very easy to find, it is almost next to the Zhujiang Road metro station.

Pearl Buck and John Rabe House at Nanjing University
jul. 2018 • Alene
John Rabe house 拉贝故居 is just outside the Southeast corner of Nanjing University (Gulou campus) and super close to the metro station. (南京大学以外的东南角)Free visit (just sign in with the caretaker inside the door.

If you are into historical sites, visit the Pearl Buck house赛珍珠故居 on campus which isn't technically open to the public for visiting hours, but you can ask the guard 保安 at the Nanjing University History Museum 南京大学校史馆 (which is open to public ) and if you are nice to him, the guard has the keys for the Pearl Buck house

認識歷史
des. 2017 • Alene

John Rabe, a normal man that became a hero by circumstances he was placed in

A very interesting museum about the person who became the protector of the Chinese people in the Nanjing Massacre. A small museum vevry worth the visit.

感恩
jan. 2018

Important peace museum
mai 2017 • Venner
Memorial home of John Rabe, the leader of the safety zone committee during the Nanjing massacre. His home is now a peace museum. The explanations are straightforward and informative, and lack the patriotic slant of the huge Nanjing Massacre Memorial. I bring most guests to Nanjing here.

John Rabe's story of compassion as documented in his former residence is timeless and inspiring
jul. 2017 • Alene
While it does not get as much attention as the Nanjing Massacre Memorial, it is of great importance in the tragic history of the city during the Japanese occupation. These two museums document the worst and the best that we human beings did to each other in times of unspeakable atrocities and suffering.

The original house of John Rabe is surprisingly small but well preserved in a relatively quiet neighborhood. It is quite unthinkable how such a small house could house dozens or even hundreds of refugees during the war. There is not a lot of original furniture or belonging left in the house, perhaps that would have made the residence museum too cramped for tourists to pass through.

There are plenty of historical documents and posters giving a detailed account of the events that transpired. There is a number of posters on the outside wall surrounding the house, showing other courageous European and American expats who were involved in setting up the safety zones, which may have saved the lives of up to 200,000 Nanjing residents. Knowing that there was someone like John Rabe in real life restores our faith that good ultimately triumphs over evil.

My only disappointment was that the diary written by John Rabe and the book written by his grand-daughter are not available for sale in the museum. These books would have given a more complete account of the events for those interested in modern Chinese history

John Rabe Residence. A piece of history before you
jan. 2016 • Familie
I have visited this attraction first back in 2014 and then 2 more times in 2015 and 2016. John Rabe, as many have listed was an employee of Siemens stationed in Nanjing during the 1937 occupation (Nanjing Massacre). He used his influence as a member of Germany Nazi party to protect a lot of refugees (women and children) during this period. He also organised other foreigners in Nanjing to house more refugees at then Jinling Women School (today's Nanjing Normal University).
This residence is a real piece of history standing the test of times and the artifacts in this place holds information of John Rabe's life in 1930s. Nothing fancy in this humble attraction but this place used to be a safe haven 79 years ago.
Being a history buff, this place is great for me.
