We planned to see lots during our half day at purple mountain and did but we did not get to see it all! Highlight for us was the Ming Tomb area which took longer than expected. There are also discounted tickets available at ticket offices that will give you entry to many attractions at purple mountain.

We really wanted to see the city from the top but weren't lucky with the hazy weather and ran into an unexpected cable car outage on March 30, 2021. From what we can tell from the base cable car station it is a 2.5 km walk to the too and there are designated cars that are permitted to drive to the top.

We found there was lots to do without going to high and the ancient city wall is in this area as well. The purple mountain scenic area is quite large and has a Sun Yat-Sen Memorial, Music Hall, Observatory and a few places to see animals. If you want to see it all you may want to plan a whole day in this area!

There are many cats around here and lots of pollen when we went so do bring allergy medication if you need it.

Located just outside of Nanjing, you can grab a metro train to the outskirts of the city and then begin your climb, though it shouldn't be too difficult since it's not massively big or steep and there are steps along the whole way to follow. Although when I climbed this mountain back in 2018 it was covered in snow and ice so I did have to literally climb it, watch where I stepped, hold onto the wooden posts running along the sides, be steady as I stepped onto the snow. There is a cable car you take to the top but that ruins the fun and sense of achievement you get once you reach the top; plus there are some small places where you can get food which you'll need after the climb. The only real problem is going back down, while this is fine in summer, in winter time it can be dangerous since I slipped a few times. The Mountain is connected to a large park and in the park you can find a monument dedicated to Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the first president of China. You will not be able to reach the very top of the mountain because there is a military base there and the authorities will not allow it, you can still get high enough to look down on all of Nanjing and take some great photos.

We saw the Purple Mountains while on a day tour of Nanjing. It was quite busy the day we visited as it was the last day of the Plum Blossom Festival and many people were taking photos. There were many sites to see, including the mausoleum, which we viewed from the base. The blossoms were beautiful!

南京郊外的一片山林,聚集了從古到今各種人文古蹟,除了人潮洶湧的中山陵和許多民國古蹟,還有非常值得參觀的明孝陵,是一片懷古的好地方。

It was a wet day when we visited, although not drenchingly so. Took a Didi up to the observatory museum, which has a couple of interesting exhibits including armillary(?) and water clocks but explanatory notes are almost exclusively in Chinese only. If not for the weather the view should have been great. We decided to take the ropeway (cable car) down, which you get to along a path along the boundary of the observatory. To get there, at the exit of the museum area, there is a path and sign for the ropeway to the right. Take the path towards the right (along a fence); it is a distance of a few hundred metres of undulating terrain (but the brick path is good) to the ropeway station, which is a midway station. It costs 60 RMB for the downhill journey. At the base station, a 50 m or so walk downwards is a bus stop. We took a car for 60 RMB towards the city but it is more a scam since the distance is fairly short; probably taking a bus would have been better!

Hiking as a tourist: an activity to breathe new air, exercise at your own pace, and be merry with birdsongs around. But it’s also a much-sought-after getaway for locals. That’s certainly the case in Nanjing’s Purple Mountain.

On my way up, I witnessed employees from Dyson walking as a team. On the way back, there are many dog owners enjoying the outdoor walk with their pets.
The climb was not too demanding, but definitely more so than the option of cable car. One of my vivid memories was the open mouth of my travel guide when I elected to go on foot. And, why not? The view is worth the mileage.

메이링궁, 중산릉, 명고궁 등 여러 명소들이 모여있는 산입니다. 걷기 좀 힘들긴 해도 중간중간 운영하는 버스가 많아서 어렵지는 않아요.

It’s open! To find it, search Zijinshan Cableway Ticket Office on Apple Maps or ZiJinShan SuoDao which is the bus stop at the bottom of the cableway. ¥100 return or ¥60 one way with the option of getting off at the observatory half way along. A good view over Nanjing with some walks and food options at the top. Try to go on a clearer day but either way, it makes for a nice day out.
