We visited West Bali National Park during the CNY holidays in Feb'24. While we stayed in The Menjangan, we spent most of our time birding outside of The Menjangan. The birding packages in the resort is very limited and confines only within the resort boundaries. We recruited the services of Idris, and we were not disappointed. He knows the place in and out and took us to the right birding spots. We had 3 sessions of birding roughly 4 hours each session and every time it was a different place and a change of habitat for spotting some birds which we had mentioned we wanted to see. We spotted Bali Myna, Javan Myna, Malkohas, Trillers, Woodpeckers, Scarlet flowerpeckers, Sunbirds, Nightjars, Bulbuls, Munias etc. Idris made sure we spent sufficient time out in the field and infact also helped arrange these sessions in the budget we had in mind. Weather was a bit of bummer at times, but overall good sessions. Do reach out to Idris (+62 823-4018-5768), apart from birding he also organizes other activities like snorkeling etc.

Tempatnya masih alami, laut dengan gradasi yang memukau. Cocok untuk melepas penat dengan lokasi yang gak jauh dari pelabuhan gilimanuk. Sometimes masih liar di beberapa bagian

We had a great trekking-bird watching experience in the Evergreen forest, saw black monkeys, giant squirrels and a lot of species of birds. We even saw an eagle, an owl and a falconet.
The finishing touch was the mangrove forest trip by boat which was also nice.
We booked a trip with Idris (+62-823-4018-5768) and it was the right decision. He has an eagle eyes for animals and a great way of conducting the tour, he basically takes you on the journey with him to see some cool animals and it's fascinating.

We really changed pace in Bali heading northwest and doing a combined birdwatching and safari tour with the famous Idriss, starting early enough to see the sunrise. We saw 40+ birds and animals and really enjoyed mindfully looking for birds first with our naked eye and then through binoculars, as we slowly walked through their relatively open habitat backed by a handsome mountain peak in the distance. Booking was easy via Whatsapp +62 823 4018 5768. We took water and snacks but Idriss supplied some too, and lunch was tasty. Would love to do an on-water tour next time.

As recommended by people here, we used Pak Idris as our guide. We opted to do three activities in one day - trekking, followed by the traditional boat mangrove tour, and finally the safari. We left our hotel (the Plateran) at 7.30am and returned by 4.50pm. Idris met us at our hotel the day before to discuss the plan and take payment. He gave us a 600k rp discount, as national park tickets (at the weekend price of 300k pp) were already provided by our hotel.

If you’re going to just do one, I’d recommend the trekking, as it was the best experience close to nature. However it was still worthwhile doing the safari later too as we were able to see some of the other animals we missed on the trek. The mangrove tour was the least worthwhile, it was just an hour’s boat around the mangrove where we were told about its conservation. However it was nice and relaxing and the sea breeze was much welcome after the stifling heat of walking round the jungle. By the mangroves, just before we boarded the boat was also the only place we saw the incredibly rare Bali Starling in the wild, which made it well worth it.

On the walk we saw giant squirrels, quite a few black monkeys, lots of different birds, macaques and different plants, including some poison trees. The walk was around two and a half hours, and was tough later on as there was no breeze and it was incredibly hot (as we’d been sensibly advised to wear long trousers - which we changed out of immediately before the next activity). On the safari we drove around for about two and a half hours, reaching further in the park than we were able to by foot, but getting out of the car on a few occasions to see the animals more closely. We got to go to one of the artificial watering holes where we saw a lot more, less timid (as the ones on the trek had quickly run away when they saw us) black monkeys, including a ginger haired baby. Plus some wild pigs, the mejangan deer, muntjac and many many macaques (a few of which tried to jump in the window if we slowed!). The safari is done in an ordinary 4x4 car rather than a jeep, presumably to stop you being attacked by monkeys.

For lunch we were taken to a local warung, which was fine. However, I did say I couldn’t eat anything spicy and the food was still spicy, so I couldn’t eat anything. My husband enjoyed the food though.

Idris was incredibly knowledgable about the animals and plants around the park, and had some great stories to tell us. He was also friendly and well organised. However we did find his accent really quite hard to understand, even my husband who is usually quite good with strong accents. This made it more difficult to communicate and learn all the things he knew. However we would use him again.

I’d absolutely recommend visiting West Bali National Park if you have time. It’s far less busy and overly touristy than other parts of Bali and feels like a very different climate. You can also include a day snorkelling on mejangan island and a night / morning in Banyuwangi (Java) to climb Ijen.

We wanted to book with Idris as we had seen lots of reviews recommending to use him if possible. You can do this easily by dropping him a whatsapp message - His number is +62 823-4018-5768.

We booked in for the Safari trip which lasted about 3 hours, and also the Mangrove Boat Tour for the afternoon which was around 2 hours. Both were great and saw lots of wildlife, in the Safari we saw several groups of the long tailed black monkeys unique to the area and also lots of other monkeys too, we saw the smaller menjangen deer in there natural habitat hcih also involved a small jungle trek to track them. Some of the other deer wwe sa were massive! We was also lucky enough to see the Wile Boar and a Large Water Monitor Lizard! On top of that we also managed to site the Giant Bali squirrel. We then stopped and have a very tasty lunch at a local Warung and as very filling and plenty to eat.

After this we took a trip to the Mangroves via Boat for the afternoon, the sites and views are just amazing. It's wworth it just to be out on the crystal clear water, but on top of that Idris gave us a full explanation of the different mangrove types and exploring the wildlife that relies on them, we managed to see Lizards, Monkeys having a swim, Eagles and a variety of colourful birds which were amazing diving in and out of the mangrove areas. The icing on the cake were the jumping fish we saw a few times near the boat!

All in all we had one of the best days we have had in Bali to date, and we have been here for 5 weeks so that's saying something!

Dont pay attention to any negative reviews as if you go with the right guide and book the right activities you are going to have the best day :)

Thank you so much Idris it was incredible.

When did we go; september, during Bali dry season.
How long; 4 days at west Bali, 3 days of tours.
What did we do (costs IDR/duration);
- First day; Evergreen forest trek and Mangrove tour by traditional boat (1.8mljn/4hours)
- Second day; Bird watching and trek (1.7mljn/5hours)
- Third day; Jungle cycling and snorkling (2.8mljn/6,5 hours)

If you love nature and animals in their natural habitat and do not like touristic crowded areas, West Bali is definitely a good idea to visit!
Note: do not expect animals to wait for you to make an instagram selfie, they‘re wild animals ;)

Experience;
Prior to the first tourday, Idris met with us to discuss the tours and what was necessary, e.g. mosquito spray, long pants etc.
1. Day. Idris gave us two binoculars to watch the animals and we went into the national park. Very soon we saw a big black animal - Idris excitedly stated it was a black giant squirrel, it was big like a bever and not like small European squirrels, very cool! - soon after that we saw a group of black monkeys in the trees who quickly tried to hide from us, also very interesting. During the hike there were several bird species and Idris knew all of them from a far distance (he didn’t use binoculars), notifying us about them (it was not even the bird tour yet). In West Bali there are approximately 250 bird species, the national icon is the Bali Starling bird, very beautiful birds. After the hike we went to the boat for the mangrove tour. After a short trip we came to a small opening and went deeper in the mangroves. Again, Idris explained all about different mangroves, how they grow, how the roots are etc. Also that they have several local projects to support the growth. After the forested part it was a nice trip to the beach where you were able to see Java and the harbour.

2. Day. This was like a very long hike where we saw mostly birds at the start, then went deeper into the jungle where it was difficult to see the birds. Aside from the birds, there were also black monkeys again and we also saw a glimpse of a large lizard. This tour was really into the jungle with small pathways and thick bushes at the end. On this day it was very hot and therefore probably did not see that many animals. It is wildlife so there remains always the risk that they are resting and you don’t see them ;) keep that in mind!

3. Day. Prior to this day he asked about foot sizes etc. to prepare snorkling and lunch. We met with Idris and he already prepared the bicycles. We got gloves and helmets (which seems odd but believe us, you’ll need them in the jungle!!). One of us was wearing flipflops, which is okay for the jungle cycling when you are Dutch, otherwise not recommended! XD
We went into the jungle and since we were faster with the bicycle, the black monkeys (yes we were lucky to also see them during the third tour!) did not see us coming until we were almost next to them! This allowed us to surprise them and we saw how they jumped from high trees, almost 6 to 8m down into the bushes to hide, very fascinating sight to see! We came by the Menjangan Resort were you have a cool first view of white beaches and clear sea. As we drove further into the park, itgot more dry so the jungle became more like a savannah with beautiful acacia trees. After approximately 2 hours we arrived at a small ranger house with a sanctuarium for the Bali Starling (several were dlying around, really beautiful!). Here they also breed them as they were almost extinct around 2005. Now in 2023 there were over a few hundred again due to this program! (We know all of this due to Idris!!!) While we had a break, around 40 wild Javan/barking deer came to the ranger house to drink at the water well that the rangers made. Fabulous sight again! We then took the bicycles on the boat and went to Menjangan Island. Here Idris explained the snorkling and how to use the flippers (good to know when its the first time ;) ).
In the water, which was super clear, there were uncountable amount of different fish, starfish, sea urchins and a lot of coral! Some of the coral was bleaching but also here, to support growth of the coral, there are programs of the locals (again, knowledge from Idris!). After the first part we had lunch at Menjangan and continued with the last snorkling tour, again very beautiful! We then went back to the beach and cycled to the starting point.

About the tour guide, Idris;
I found him here on Tripadvisor and communication was super from the start! He is super supportive, sympathetic, helpful and has an immense amount of knowledge about West Bali National Park! You can ask him about anything you see during the tours and he most likely has a story about it! We could’ve not imagined any other guide than Idris! Wonderful guy, and funny :P
