Built on the early 19th century, this huge compound of heritage buildings was once a villa owned by a French living in Batavia (Dutch East Indies name of today's Jakarta). Officially opened as textile museum in the 1970s, this museum houses a wide range of textiles from many regions of Indonesia.

THE ATMOSPHERE
I love being in the back garden where they grow various kinds of plants, such as hibiscus, ylang ylang, jasmine and guavas - some are used as natural dyes for the clothes exhibited in the museum.

There were signs of photo taking not allowed inside, so I didn't take any indoors photos, but you can have a glimpse of how it would feel like being their garden by looking at some pics I took.

WHAT I LIKED BEST
The garden.

WHAT I THINK COULD BE IMPROVED
The narrow alley in between exhibits... it was as if they tried to cramp as many clothes as possible inside a room. The shop was also selling some low quality of products, such as 'kebaya yang bordirannya ditempel' and printing batik.

I think that it's a missed opportunity to introduce a rich heritage of Indonesia when you're putting a product that could be made better in the only shop in this museum.

The Textile Museum of Jakarta offers you a unique plunge into the mysterious and mystical world of batik textiles. A critical traditional feature to understand Indonesia-s mosaic of cultures, merging textile production, and the art of craving with hot beeswax. The museum displays hundreds of clothes, both popular and aristocratic, from almost all of the 34 provinces of the country. However, the batiks from Java and Sumatra stand up with some magnific examples of apparatus production. Several mannequins explain to the visitor some dressing patterns with gender and different regional distributions. Finally, the museum has an atelier where one can learn and do a batik piece: unforgettable. I have also noticed that the Lisbon Gulbenkian Foundation has contributed to the museum renovation: well done.

One of recommended place to visit while u are in jakarta. This is was old building. Located very near to the biggest shopping centre in Jakarta Tanah Abang so might busy for access. The building was nice and historical. It used to be the village belong the French people during colonial time.
When we go inside the museum, we can see textile collections, not only batik but also tenun, songket, and more.
For those people who wants to learn making batik, this is the right place. We can see and learn how to making batik. With simple patterns. Not a big size of batik but it's really cool and awesome to learn by ur self and bring it home. And it's not too expensive also.
In pendopo, we can learn how making that. And the local guide would also accompany and explain us alot also about batik and the processing, and give every best suggestion for creating wonderful batik with our own style.
If u have ur own idea with ur own pattern for making batik, just do that.
The place also was calm and cold since alot of big trees here. Not so noisy. We can also sit and relax under the tree and enjoy our drink.
If u wanna buy souvenir also, this museum has options for souvenirs.
Easy for public transportation. And also good place to visit for learning Batik as one of world heritage from Indonesia.

What a charming museum! On entry, make your way to the back building where you can experience making your own small batik piece to take home! While your batik dries, you will be guided to the gift shop. It's lovely to purchase a piece made by the instructor! And now it is time to look at the exhibit. ( My appreciation was much greater after learning the process of making a batik.) As a bonus, there were two school trips visiting and it was great fun to see the young children having fun. The grounds of the museum are lovely and serene.

Interesting, but less than riveting. The security guy was keen to take our picture, don’t think he sees many Europeans. Worth a quick visit, local traffic a nightmare. Go by taxi and pay the driver to wait, as it will be nigh on impossible to find one. They could do so much more with this museum from a visitor point of view.

Aside from the museum I was able to participate in batik making. Pick out a simple pattern. The simpler the better as this technique is extraordinarily difficult to manage. Locals provide guidance on how to create your piece. It is time consuming and tedious but such a cool process. After processing in the dye baths and hanging it out to dry we explored the museum filled with unbelievable batiks. It seems impossible the delicate patterns and prints are all done by hand. If you enjoy the local art and can take a moment to try it out I highly recommend a visit.
