I've lived in Jogja for a number years and I've earmarked this place but has not gotten around to visit. Pleasantly surprised that this place is just 30 mins away from the city. The museum is well maintained, organized and clean. The English guide was charming and she answered our dozens of questions with enthusiasm. Not to forget that in this forest-like place is a cozy and elegant restaurant that served good food. It's that kind of place you can visit during weekends to unwind and disconnect in the middle of a forest.

Because we speak English, not local language, we are given Tour Option 1 only as Tour Option 2 is in local language only. Tour 1 discusses the Rulers in the 20th Century to the present only. The clothes they wore & a little bit about their lives. Tour 2 covers the history of Indonsia from the pre-islam period thru present time stressing the kingdoms & the colonial periods. Even a brief discussion on Princess Diana's visits. Tour 1 is terrible. Don't do it. Tour 2 is excellent but their is a language problem. The Museum & grounds are gorgeous. What a shame they changed their pre-pandemic policy on tours. The guide Etu was very rude & should be kinder to foreigners. A demotion is appropriate in my opinion.

This was my second time visiting this place. The experience was still amazing! The ambiance of the building is exquisite! In the area of the Merapi volcano, we got fresh air from the green nature. Very well taken care of. The guide was friendly and smart. She gave a lot of information. If you go to Yogyakarta, this place is worth a visit.

A highlight of this trip to Yogya is the Ullen Sentalu museum, built about 30 years ago to house a private collection that shines a light on Javanese culture. It’s cool on the mountain slope, surrounded by pine and cinnamon, with greenery above and beside us. We enter through the ‘cave’ built of stones from the volcano Merapi, and see the gamelan instruments as well as paintings of Javanese dancers in royal settings. The building is designed like a floating maze connecting 5 rooms. Photos of the Sultans abound, including many with the Dutch royals, especially before independence.
The Princesses seem to have been well educated leaders of their time. I particularly enjoyed the room with Princess Nurul, the only daughter of Sultan Mangkunegara the seventh. She was an equestrian, rare for a woman at that time, and a beautiful Javanese classical dancer who, in her teens, danced at the wedding of Princess Juliana of the Netherlands. For me the wonderful thing was that she was accompanied For this by a ‘remote’ gamelan orchestra, recorded in Java. Pre online video conferencing! A strong and talented woman, three suitors - Soekarno, Sutan Sjahrir, and Sultan Hamengkubuwono the 9th - proposed to her, But all were turned down because she refused to be in a polygamous marriage (they already had other wives). She married a soldier when she was 30 years old and apparently led a happy life in Bandung.
The Tineke room was also a favourite (Tineke was the younger sister of Pakubuwana XII). It contains many handwritten letters from members of her family, framed and translated into English, Dutch or Bahasa Indonesia as required. They range from loving and caring to heartbreaking themes. I particularly liked one referring to her as a princess in a golden cage, that reminded me of a bird missing its freedom.

It was very great experience to visit this museum. Very nice place to know more about history of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. The local guide was so kind and informative. The best time to visit probably will be in the morning and the afternoon before 2 pm

We visited Ullen Sentalu museum last Dec 31st, which proven to be very interesting and enjoyable. This is a privately run museum but under coordination with government ministry. The best way to enjoy this museum is to join both tours provided, at very reasonable fees, to understand the history about Java and its people, and Yogyakarta & Surakarta Sultanate. One tour is conducted in Bahasa Indonesia and the other one is in English. Photos taking only allowed at certain locations and not allowed during the tours themselves. I strongly recommend visiting this museum when you’re in Yogyakarta or Magelang area.

Yes, a wheel chair can be used to enter the museum, with the help of a second person, I imagine it would not be easy to manouver along the museum premises. The museum consists of separate buildings, each other were connected by stone pathways. Many of those pathways have up and down stairs. As I remember there were some narrow pathways. Bring along an umbrella in wet season (September - February) because the rain may fall unexpectedly.
In short, wheel chairs can be used in museum buildings with limited access, with the help of accompany person.

Merapi and Ullen Sentalu Museum is in the same area, Kaliurang, is not take a long time from Merapi to the museum, it's about 15-30 menit. According to my experience, you can ask the guide from Merapi Jeep Tour to drop you off in the museum.

I will be visiting Jogya from the US and I am wondering about transportation to and from the museum from Jogya. I understand that public transportation is limited.

If you use public transportation , could rise from Malioboro . Precisely , in the surrounding Sosrowijayan Trans Jogja stop .2B and 3B and the fall in the North Ring Road Shelter - Kentungan .After that, the freight car ride Elf towards Kaliurang . Down at the fork near Vogels Hostel . From this fork you have to walk about 10 minutes to Ullen Sentalu .

Hello.I like to visit Ullen Sentalu museum. Is it possible to go here by public transport?

Jakarta, Indonesia44 bidrag
Hi,
Local transport does not reach that area. It will be better if you hire a car and local driver. Because the location are remoted in the Mount Merapi area. It will be little dangerous if you drive alone, since the road very narrow and on the back of mountain. Lot of car rental in Yogya when you googling it.
Kami berencana ke Ulen Sentalu pada 30 Agustus 2015 berombongan 46 orang. Apakah buka? Jam berapa? Berapa harga tiket rombongan? Terima kasih infonya. (Nuraini Surabaya)
