The cave was beautiful, however the walls of the caves were vandalized. Dont forget to take the boat ride as it was amazing as well.

Penablanca in Cagayan Province in Northern Luzon boasts of one of the most interesting tourist destinations in the country: the Callao Caves. I'm talking about a series of around 300 caves in an area located approximately 24 kms from Tuguegarao City.

The easiest way to get there is to fly to Tuguegarao City, and then, if you don't have your own vehicle, rent a tricycle for about 500 pesos round-trip (travel time is about an hour) to Penablanca and tell the driver to take you to Pinacanauan River, which you would have cross on boat to reach the welcome area to the site. It's only a five-minute boat ride and it would cost you only 20 pesos round-trip.

At the welcome area you'll have to pay an entrance fee to the caves, and then climb 184 steps to reach the entrance to one of the caves. The first thing you should look for near the entrance to the cave is the spot where a piece of bone of one of the earliest human inhabitants in the Philippines was discovered. It was a metatarsal bone 67,000 years old discovered in 2007.

As you enter the cave, you'll find yourself inside a huge chamber converted into a natural cathedral or church, where religious services are still being held. Its scenic ambiance makes it one of the favorite shooting locations for films and wedding venues. As you continue walking inside the cave, you'll cross a number of chambers with beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations. Some of the chambers have natural opening on the roof, allowing the sunlight to lit the interior of the caves. Don't worry, the ground is pretty level and you wouldn't have to climb up and down inside the caves.

I would very highly recommend a visit to Callao Caves not only because of their natural beauty, but also because of their significance in the pre-history of the Philippines (being one of the dwelling places of our ancestors). :D

people do not think that there is a 7-chamber cave that exists in the northern part of the Philippines, particularly in Cagayan Valley.... this is one the most accessible caves I have been... it is long walk going up the caves, but the moment you get, the air is so refreshing... you can either go to the caves by car or crossing the Penablanca River.... after the caves, you can get a river cruise.....

you'll pay like 40 pesos to enter ...you can walk around without or with a guide..I prefere no guide as I'd like to take time to looked around and take a lot of ictures.Be prepare to walk on a steep hill. There were 184 steps to reach the top but then you need to walk more to see all the 7 chambers.Bring bottled of water to quenched your thirst.Wear a shoes that has a good thread as some areas are wet and can be slippery. The cave has amazing view.

We drove 45 minutes from tuguegarao just to see this cave...it's no doubt. It's rely amazing. The entrance fee is 20 pesos. We asked for tour guide and they assigned a 10 year old boy who is great. He was well knowledgable about the cave, the history of it and all the rock formations inside the cave. As we ascend the 180 step towards the cave we were greeted by the beautiful landscape of tuguegarao acroos the Cagayan river. The cave very solem. They conduct Catholic mass every 1st Saturday of the month. To bad we went Sunday so we didn't,t experience it. The cave has 5 chambers which are well ventilated. Just extra caution when you're inside. Everyone that gets out the cave has only one word AMAZING!!!!

Consists of 7 chambers, for me, the whole adventure inside the cave was short. But it was a sight to see. Although it has its tough areas, an able-bodied person should be able to get up to the 5th chamber.

If this cave is too easy for you, try the Sierra cave which is within the same area. Short walking distance.

I wish I could show you pictures when we went there but unfortunately, the memory card broked just when I am about to upload pics from the trip. A minimal entrance fee is required to enter. Tour is being given by students on OJT which is a good thing as they earn while studying. It was a difficult trip going up on the cave but worth the trip as the cave is just breathtaking. There was a chapel inside the cave and what I like about the place is that you can visit the chamber by foot and take your time taking photos and admiring the place. We signed up for a river cruise and bat watching which is also one activity you should not miss. But you have to time your arrival as bat can only be seen around 6pm when they go out of the cave. Best time to come is around 3pm, do the callao cave tour first.. eat halo halo just outside the entrance while waiting for the river and bat tour. The place is 1 1/2 hour ride from Tuguegarao city. After sunset, it gets very dark so better bring snacks as there are not a lot of options nearby and flashflight as well. Yes, bring flashflight ;)
