The Masjid Sultan, located in the historic Kampong Glam district, is one of the most impressive mosques in Singapore. With its huge golden dome and majestic minarets, it dominates the landscape and attracts many visitors, both for its religious importance and for its magnificent architecture. It is a key place to understand the history of the Malaysian Muslim community in Singapore. She is very beautiful and deserves the detour to take her picture. But it is also very touristy, surrounded by souvenir shops and restaurants/terraces for tourists that make the serene atmosphere of the place disappear.

During my initial visit to a mosque, I was struck by the tourist-friendly atmosphere and the remarkable intricacy of the interior design. The aesthetic appeal of the design was truly impressive. Overall, it was a delightful tour and an enriching experience.

We clicked this place for July 2024. The mosque is large and clean. Tsama Mosque is at the top and you can climb the stairs or the elevator for which there are pebbles and a glass . Women’s round of water in the fountain and you have to take off your shoes and wear a jacket (it’s in the bathroom) even if you’re wearing a garb which means the garb is going out of the bathroom! Non-Muslims have specific times to visit . Women are not allowed to enter the men section. Beside the mosque are many Turkish and Arab restaurants, cafes, shops, and Islamic schools. Just watching it from the outside makes me feel solemn. I visited around noon on Friday, so tourists are not allowed in the mosque, which is the Muslim Sabbath prayer day. Singing calls, which I had seen in movies, were playing through the speakers, and I felt a living religion.

Central point of the area over looking an attractive street of Middle Eastern restaurants. Pristine and bright with whites and gold. Lovely area away from busting city

Absolutely beautiful and iconic building in Haji Lane. I didn't get to go inside as it was closed for prayer service the day I was there but it was just as amazing gazing at this beautiful building from the outside.

On the outside it is not bad, it is big and seems to be more interesting than it actually is although, it would be nice a restoration
But inside, it's the ugliest mosque I've ever seen.

Impressive structure in the middle of the district.
The largest and most beautiful mosque in the city.
Immense size.
We were not allowed in, but so worth it.

The Sultan Mosque is the largest in all of Singapore. And also the oldest and most monumental. It is located in Kampong Glam, the Middle Eastern neighborhood of the city. It's only open four hours a day, but this afternoon around three I was lucky enough to find it open. I have to say that the outside, with its golden dome, is much more beautiful than the inside. So it's not that tragic to end up there when it's closed.

I cannot go during the times that are open to the public. Is it still mostly visible from the outside even if I cannot go in?
Skrevet 26. juni 2019
Yes , you can take pictures from outside . Try going on a full moon night to get a spectacular view of the mosque .

Hi,
Anybody know if the daytime opening hours are the same during Ramadan? I couldn’t find any information about it on their website.
Thanks
Skrevet 5. mai 2019
I doubt that the Sultan Mosque would be closed to infidels during Ramadan. I’ll be in the Middle East this Ramadan, and expect no problems in either Egypt or Istanbul. Southeast Asian mosques in general are much more welcoming than those in the Near East (let alone those in North Africa anywhere between Cairo and Morocco). Time your visit though: avoid going during prayer times, and go when it’s sunny (to get the best photos of the dome). I’d avoid going on a Friday during Ramadan. Checking with your hotel might be a good idea. Obviously being covered from neck to wrists and ankles is important any time of year. I discuss masjid etiquette, as well as the Sultan Mosque’s architecture and history, at some length in my TA review of it. Three points of etiquette I did not put into my review are (a) always step into the mosque with your right foot first, and exit with your left foot first; (b) if sitting, keep your feet pointing away from the mihrab, just as in Buddhist temples you never point them at the Buddha; (c) during Ramadan, don’t display, let alone consume, any food or beverage in the vicinity of the Sultan Mosque. Since Singapore’s primarily non-Muslim, eating and drinking anywhere else in town is no problem. If you’re planning to see the Southern Ridges, Bukit Timah, Buddha Tooth Temple, National Museum, or Singapore Zoo, you might my reviews of those attractions useful. Pity Singapore’s so expensive: it’s my favourite city in the world.

Are women allowed? Anything specific to be followed?
Skrevet 17. juni 2018
Yes, women are allowed. Shoulders and legs have to be covered, but in case they aren’t, they provide you with specific clothes you wear before entering

Hi. in visiting the Sultan Mosque, do I need to fill out a form in advance? is there any fee to be paid inside?
Skrevet 19. oktober 2017
Hi. No form was needed and no fee was charged when I was there. I just arrived and a very helpful 'worshipper' explained many things and answered questions for me. Language was a slight barrier. Enjoy!

Good morning from Sydney NSW Australia. We are visiting Singapore 21 - 25 the Aug 2017. When would be a good time to visit Sultan Mosque, and perhaps have a tour? Kind Regards Robert
Skrevet 3. august 2017
From what I've seen, there are no 'tours' in any of the houses of worship in Singapore. If the mosque is open; they aren't in the middle of prayers, then you can take off shoes and socks and go in. These are religious establishments, not museums. If you're quiet, polite, decorously dressed, however, you'll be welcomed... just look closely before taking a photo. In some houses of worship there will be discrete signs reading; No Photo or No Entry. If you follow their requests they'll be delighted! Remember to have $1 or $2 in a convenient pocket of a donations or charity box. And yes, Zam Zam is an excellent idea before / after your visit. If you sit at a table on the footpath of ZamZam, you can enjoy the view of the back of the Sultan Mosque while eating their delicious food!
