We visited Volunteer Point with a cruise excursion. It’s an experience you will not forget. Watching the penguins leaving the beach for their hunt as well as coming back to shore is breathtaking.
Be prepared for a rough ride to Volunteer Point.

NOTE: THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE PRIVATE TOUR PROVIDED BY CARROT
Although not cheap, this tour is undoubtedly the high point of any visit to the islands and should not be missed. The journey takes about 2.5 hours in each direction, the last 8 miles over barely visible tracks in rough terrain. But Carrot is an old pro, and you feel completely safe in his hands. He is also highly talkative and full of interesting anecdotes and local history knowledge. The penguin colonies at Volunteer Point are pure magic. The king penguins are beautiful and docile, and will not startle in your presence. Running or tiptoing (if that’s the right word) into the turquoise waves on a white-sand beach, they are a sight to behold, as is their main colony a few hundred meters inland, where you can see the brown fluffy chicks, many taking refuge under their parents’ feet. There is also a large colony of gentoos and many magellanics popping in and out of their burrows. I saw also turkey vultures, sandpipers, many upland geese, gulls and a sea lion, and the rocks, rockpools and sand-dune vegetation are a beautiful setting. Although the weather was near-perfect on the day of my visit, I suspect it would be a spectacular day out in ANY weather. Carrot allotted us four hours to wander around the site, which was adequate. The only possible downside is that if you go on a ‘cruise-ship’ day, access to the penguin colonies will be limited, and you will be obliged to stand behind rope barriers to view the birds, rather than approach. Check this out by making arrangements in advance with Carrot.

Patrick Watts Tours owned now by Shaun Jaffray is the tour to take if you make it to the Falkland Islands! His mom drove us!! The last one miles of terrain in the 4x4 was rough, but totally worth it! We saw king, gentoo, and Magellan penguins. LOTS OF THEM! We were walking all through them. It is the nesting place for the king penguins and we saw many eggs on their feet and many babies. It was our number 1 on our recent cruise ship vacation! Highly recommend.

Absolutely amazing close up view of approximately 3000 beautiful king penguins at Volunteer Point of Falkland Island during our recent cruise stop. We went with Jimmy Curtis who has been taking tours there for the past twelve years. He can lead up to 32 guests daily to this private property in his fleet of Toyota Landcruisers. It has a longer wheelbase and comfy seats, smoother and less bumpy than some of the vehicles used by other tour guides. I booked directly with him at less than half the cost of the cruise line. A great gentleman and a fantastic off road driver. The trip took six hours and he met us at the tender boat pier. He can be reached at WhatsApp 50051671 or Jim.tan@horizon.co.fk. Volunteer Point visit was one of the highlights of our 16 days Antarctic cruise. Since they only allow about 150 visitors daily, you must book your tour as early as possible . Don’t miss it !

From November through March when the cruise ships are passing through, this is probably still great. There are people who'll get too close to the penguins, and you'll be among 100-200 people, but it's still a colony of King Penguins and a fantastic beach, so what's not to like?
In October though it's FANTASTIC. On the entire beach and area of the penguins, it was just me and ONE other person the whole two hours I was there.
A word of warning: it's a 2.5 hour drive from Stanley, of which the last 90 minutes is very slowly across very bump, wet, hilly ground.

This was an adventure to get to. We traveled over bogs, streams, fields and some dangerous terrain to arrive at Volunteer Point. There were a number of penguins here. The weather and terrain can be very rough. Probably the roughest two to three hour ride we have ever had, first over gravel roads, and then over rough terrain. Our driver kept talking about how she prayed we wouldn't break down in the process as we were miles from anywhere. We did drive in a caravan for safety reasons. It is mostly king penguins but there are also some Gentoo and Magellanic penguins as well. The weather was rainy with a very strong wind, but it is the Falklands so you can get some crazy weather in the blink of an eye.
This is one of the best places to see the King Penguins outside of South Georgia. You are on a sandy beach next to the water so the penguins come and go up to a rise with a grassy area where most of them congregate. They are all around.

Patrick Watts Tour to Volunteer Point on Falkland Islands out of Stanley is well worth the trip! When the cruise ship tours were booked, we found his tour and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Many tour companies want money up front, but getting into Stanley via cruise ship is a 50/50 proposition depending on weather. Patrick Watts did not require prepayment. The tour operator met us at the port and got us off and going on our way very quickly. It is a rough, bumpy ride off road to the Point, but our driver did an excellent job making the trip as safe and enjoyable as possible. A stop on the way at the Bake Safe was reflective of the hospitality of the islanders, as well as the packed lunch that was included on the tour. The sight of hundreds of King Penguins, Gentoo and Magellan penguins is breathtaking. Photo ops abound. This was a great location to see so many penguins in one place. A short tour of the town on the way back was also provided. Many thanks to all the tour guides who made this trip possible. We highly recommend this tour company.

The journey out to Volunteer Point is conducted in individual 4x4's that drive in a caravan of 6-7 trucks. The journey out is terrific, with beautiful scenery and plenty of good ol' fashion 4-wheeling. If you gut stuck in the mud (we didn't)...no problem as one of the other range rovers will help you out. The trucks are super comfortable and clearly have been put to the test...so they can be trusted and you'll be super safe.
After about 1.5 hrs from Stanley, one is rewarded with excellent animal viewing and beautiful vistas. Our weather was pouring rain, but even that couldn't damper our excitement and the spirit of adventure. This is King Penguin central with thousands of birds. We saw penguins molting, feeding their young, sitting on a few remaining eggs and traveling back and forth to the sea for something to eat. Also saw rock hoppers and Gentoo penguins here...so if you're looking for penguins, this is definitely the place to come. Definitely not to be missed!

The journey (via 4X4) is as good as the destination. We say numerous king penguins, as well as chin-step and adelie penguins. The views along the water are beautifully and the penguins just accent the event.

With the benefit of TA reviews I booked this tour far in advance of our cruise. Patrick is a pro. He communicates promptly by email answering any and all questions clearly and substantively. Whether the cruise ship docks at Stanley is only a 50/50 proposition, so Patrick doesn’t even take a deposit in advance. Fortunately, we were one of the lucky ones. Our ship docked and we’d arranged with other passengers on the tour to get the first tender to shore. Everything was well-organized and efficient. Nine 4x4 vehicles, each taking 4 passengers took the 2 ½ hour ride, half of which was on “off-road” routes. The ride to Volunteer Point was fun and enjoyable; our guide, Sean, a lifelong Falklander, was great. Sean spent the ride outlining the history of the islands, including the 1982 War, along with offering interesting commentaries about life of Falklanders living on the island. The highlight, of course, was Volunteer Point. Hundreds of King Penguins in one colony, two other colonies of Gentoo Penguins and Magellanic Penguins in burrowed homes on the beach. Photos galore, including video’s of chicks eating from the mothers and watching penguins waddle and scamper to/from the ocean for swimming/feeding. Truly an amazing experience at excellent value with a terrific tour company. As one of the highlights of our South America adventure, I highly recommend this tour!

Hola! Quisiera saber cuál es la época del año más conveniente para visitar las Islas Malvinas? Gracias!
Skrevet 30. januar 2020
We booked and had to pay 100% upfront. We are supposed to land in 2 days. Captain of our ship says weather will not allow us to go to the Falklands. Tour is through Indoor America. Will they refund us ?
Skrevet 16. februar 2019
Sorry I am not aware of Indoor America. The tours we saw were all collecting money once we arrived at Volunteer Point. Hopefully they will refund! So sorry you won’t make it to Stanley.
Skrevet 16. februar 2019
If I book and yhen the ship has to cancel due to weather is there a refund...heard weather van be hard for ships yo navigate at times.
Skrevet 29. januar 2019
I don't know, we were not on a ship. You might contact the tour operator yourself or take a look on their website for that.

Hi. From the point the 4x4 jeep stops how far is it to walk to the penguins? Is there shelter and seats for people who don't want to or are not able to walk for the 2 hr stop? Travellers may have slightly limited mobility so wondered if this tour is still suitable for them. Thanks in advance!
Skrevet 11. januar 2019
It's a few 100m. There's a small shelter (and toilets) where the 4x4 parks. There are no manmade paths to follow.

Hi, mayda. What would you like to know about this attraction?
We want to see King Penguins and sunrise and sunset so who do I contact and where to stay at Volunteer Point Falkland Islands overnight?
Skrevet 3. januar 2019
What is the internet address for this tour company? Thank you.

How do we get in contact with Patrick Watts? Seems the website is no longer booking with Trip Advisor. Thank you very much!

We'll be cruising with Celebrity Eclipse and arriving in Port Stanley on February 12, 2019. We'd like to visit the Volunteer Point but this excursion with the cruise ship is sold out. It'd be greatly appreciated if anyone has any suggestion how we'd visit this "must-see" place?
Many thanks!
