We did the 7-night cruise on Iberostar Grand Amazon from Sept 2-9, 2024. Overall, we had a great time on this trip.
Boarding and de-boarding in Manaus is fairly easy (as long as you’re able to move your own luggage up/down the long ramp to the docks). The ship itself is showing some age, but it is still in pretty good shape.
Passengers were primarily Brazilian and there were only a handful of fellow English-speakers; communicating with the crew is also challenging sometimes unless you speak Portuguese, but they do their best (and often have translator apps on their phones, if needed). We speak some Spanish and this did help a little bit at times.
Food is obviously subjective, but we always found something we liked (note: there will be a lot of different fish served at dinner). Some favorites over the week were pizza, fried fish and ice cream during “snacks” on the top deck, omelets at breakfast, and bread in the main dining room at all meals.
The excursions were hit and miss, and often subject to which wildlife is out and about, but the guides are all excellent and do their best to make sure you have the best experience possible.
By far, the highlight of our time on this trip was the crew, all of whom did an excellent job and worked very hard to ensure guests enjoyed their cruise. Some crew members truly stood out, went above and beyond, and deserve special recognition here (and we included where we primarily interacted with them): Edson (main dining room), Samuel (main dining room), Marco (pool area), Diogo (lounge bar), and Nailson Reis (many areas).
However, the very best crew member we met during our week was Vitor, who was a bartender on the top deck (near the pool). Vitor always had a smile on his face, always had a great attitude, did his best to communicate with us despite language barriers, and made the best drinks on the ship. Iberostar is very lucky to have him.

The Tucano 7 days was/is the trip of a lifetime. If you have any desire to see the Amazon region - take this trip. The ship is very comfortable (private bath - A/C) combined the comfort with expert guides who grew up in the area and know the traditions of this region, a great attentive crew, delicious fresh cooked meals, extraordinary wildlife and spectacular scenery and that = 5! This area of the world is amazing! This is an active trip that includes hiking in the jungle - several launches (taking smaller boats down the river and into the coves) , piranha fishing (and the chef cooked our catches for a fabulous meal). If you want to take time to read, nap, or hang on the bigger boat that is an option.

A few notes about a vacation in the Amazon river (amazonas) 2023
A. Do not contact travel agencies. You finance the brokerage fee for the guids they hire. Directly contact the guids whose names are published on the various websites.
Regardless, haggle. In practice, it turned out that we paid half the price of other tourists. The method here is to ask for a very high price when tourists make contact from abroad by email and see if they agree... Start by mentioning the fact that you read that a vacation cost more... (in my case 1000 per person for 4 nights 5 days, but you may find even cheaper).
B. Amazon Great Tours agency - really not recommended. It is expensive and the attitude is not the most pleasant. The head of the company is (2023) Claudio and he brings other guides with the travelers paying the brokerage gap.
The financial treatment was also not very honest. When they wanted dollars instead of reals they demanded $30 more saying the exchange rate was different. I opened three websites and showed them the exact amount and only then tey gave up. Upon arrival, they demanded the remaining amount beyond the 20% paid in the first place, before leaving the area. When we saw what we got later - we understood why they were afraid they wouldn't pay the rest...
C. As far as the guide/manager named gilmar is concerned - I highly doubt if I would recommend him:
On the one hand, his treatment was unpleasant and dishonest (he is kind of subordinate to Claudio): the attitude was unpleasant, the lodge he organized was of a very low level (see below), he planned two activities a day: between 08:30-10:00 and between 15:00-16:30 and that's it. He claimed that this was acceptable...only when I explained him that it was out of the question and that I wanted significantly longer activities that would fill the day (luckily the other part of the group were co-operated ) - it turned out that it was also possible to do things until 11:30 etc. The boat we traveled with was very slow and had no cover from the sun (unlike others, although most of them didn't).
When there were problems with the rooms, it turned out that they pretty ignored him. From the beginning he presented a picture of an almost Olympic size pool in the lodge, in reality it was tiny.
His behavior really destroyed the atmosphere
On the other hand, outside the lodge he behaved professionaly, even if some of his explanations were nonsense ("rubber doesn't come off the tree now because during these hours the rubber climbs up...". After two minutes and another blow the rubber drips from the tree...).
d. Make sure where you are taken to sleep. The lodge pausada mamori amazonas is not recommended in any way. Make sure you are not sent there: countless cockroaches and ants in the rooms. Some of the rooms smelled like toilet ("it is from thr rain"...), others leaked when it rained (and rained) the cooking - wasn't very good and repeated itself, the cook who run the place not nice at all, the air conditioners do not cool, an electric shower head electrifies with three modes: cold, cold or cold, termites bite in the rooms, they did a favorur to put toilet paper in the dining room, VIP only if you pay, only a few vegetables, they lock the air-conditioned dining room after the meal so there is nowhere to sit while outside was full of mosquitoes. The rooms are not cleaned at all, the sheets are barely cover the mattresses.
E. When you communicate with someone, ask for a detailed plan of activities and the duration of the activities. demand that each activity will last 3-3.5 hours. In the morning at least until 11-11:30. They will say that it is hot at noon. you can still go out for an activity, even if not right after lunch.
F. I offer to ask for the following activities: walking in the forest for at least 3 hours, Pyrenean fishing (actually, we do it for 30-45 minutes until everyone succeeded), night observation of caiman crocodiles, sunrise tour (require to enter the trees. We were simply guided to the middle of the river to watch the sun rise. I offer to demand both), a bird watching and pink dolphins tour and more. They will offer to go to a local school or a local house. It does not justify half a day but barely half an hour.
G. We recommend guide named Frank, a guy from Biafra, who accompanied us one day instead of Gilmar. He tried very hard. Here too, according to his questions, we understood that the issue of prices is very flexible. Where they can - they charge double the price. His number is 9291036682 with area code 55+
H. We paid 3000 for three people for five days (in practice this means we arrived on the first day afternoon and on the last day we left at noon) including activities, 3 meals and water.
I. In retrospect, 5 days were far too much if you come only for activity (not to rest).
J. Keep in mind that the road from Manaus is long and bumpy, ant it takes about five hours of crossings between cars, boats and ferries to the lodge.
K. The amazonas experince is great.
Enjoy

The Amazon Region is an amazing experience that is surprisingly easy to visit.
900.00 dollar COPA airline flight from DC and 10 hours later you are in the jungle.
Iberostar Grand Amazon ship is the way to go.
This experience can be had for half the cost you would pay to take your family to DisneyWorld. Only the jungle ride here is quite real!
I went during lower cost so called rainy season; never took my pinch out of my bag.

Not for the young adventurers, but I am 75 and loved it. Some Caribbean islands then two weeks on the Amazon River. Get a balcony -sit and watch. Triciclo in Paritin and Santarem was nice. Manaus sadly is dangerous...told don't wear jewelry, etc.HAL needs more employees on the ship, dinner took way too long, but the ARiver was wonderful Nov to December. No mosquitoes, no rain.

We had never been to Manaus or the Amazon area; we weren't sure how to go about it-- stay in a hotel in Manaus, or stay in a guest house outside Manaus; or do an Amazon Cruise. We ended up doing one of the fancier cruises: The Iberostar Grand Amazon, in July last year. The weather was glorious, with little rain; the food, while repetetive, was certainly edible with some good local fruits and fishes prepared every day. Rooms, while furnishings are old, are super clean and the AC worked well. Staff was all excellent. Some spoke English, and I speak enough Spanish to get by without Portuguese. The week we went, about 80%+ of the passengers were Brazilian, with a small mix of other countries.
Side trips are also included-- we loved the piranha fishing, the nature hike, the night boat tour to find crocodiles, and more. We did all of them. What's so great is that, while the base price feels expensive when you're paying ahead of time, since all food and drinks and excursions are included, you don't spend almost anything else when on board. That seems quite unlike most cruises I've heard of.
To wake up and sit on your small balcony and sip a coffee at dawn on the Amazon is something I'll never forget.... (all rooms, even the cheapest lower deck (first floor) room that we had) have this balcony. And the pool is awesome at the end of a busy day of side trips!
The "trip" is actually just a voyage up for 1-2 days and then back to Manaus.
Totally recommended once Covid is under control.

My husband and I cruised on the Iberostar Heritage Grand Amazon for 3 nights in January 2020. Overall, this was an easy, comfortable and bug-free way to see the wonders of the Amazon region, complete with friendly service, good all-inclusive cocktails but slightly disappointing food.
There was trepidation in the air before embarking, and first impressions weren't particularly good - the ship smelled of damp and mildew (although you'll get used to it...which probably isn't a good thing). But everything was good in the end :)
The cabin was okay, although the shower pressure was very weak. Toilet paper went in the bin. The balcony was tiny, but two adults could squeeze in and sit down. AC was very efficient.
Service throughout was excellent, efficient and friendly. Our glasses and cocktails were kept topped up on the sundeck and in the restaurant. You can also take a drink with you to your cabin to enjoy.
The excursions, conducted in relatively small groups, were good, interesting and took just the right amount of time. The guides spoke very good English.
The only slight negative was the food, which didn't correlate to the price tag of the cruise. It was repetitive and almost only buffet. I'm glad we "only" did the three night cruise because of this.
Mosquitoes were present and we were both bitten even when using repellent.

This review is solely about the M/V Tucano. This was a fantastic trip. Someone posted an earlier whinge about it being only 2.5 days, but its clear you have to board and leave and there are three clear days when your out either on kayaks or small boats for a couple of hours a time. This was an excellent trip and it's a brilliant experience cruising down such a fantastic river miles from nowhere. The boat has only 20 berths which was fantastic, meaning you get personal service, but we saw a larger 120 person boat which was dreadful with boats that were not able to get away from the main river.its worth paying extra for this personal service. The guides were excellent, actively sought out insects, creatures and birds to see. The walks in the jungle were well worth it, not at all arduous, but dependent on the rain. The visit to the farmer was a little more touristy, but greatly interesting to see how they lived, what they ate, and what they grew.
Food was also excellent, given the size of the boat and circumstances being miles from anywhere. The fish were excellent as were the daily cakes

Does the Ibrostar Grand Amazon actually travel on the Amazon River, knowing that it travels on the Rio Negro.

We’re going in the Iberostar Grand Amazon in March. I was told that there is no WiFi and Verizon coverage is terrible. Anyone have experience with this?
Skrevet 31. januar 2019
That is correct...there is no WiFi or cell service. You're in the middle of the AMAZON! Unplug, make new friends, read a book (River of Doubt is excellent), bring playing cards, and/or rent a movie from the library. We downloaded some movies before we left. I was apprehensive about the lack of WiFi and cell service but I think the experience was more enjoyable without it. Have a great time.

Hello,
We have a trip on Amazon Grand Iberostar booked in March. Can someone give us the times when you board the boat and time when you must get off the boat. We are waiting to hear back from Iberostar, but in the meantime we don't want to call at $$ per minute from USA to Brazil.....and we want to book some flights around the river cruise.
What time did you board and what time must you leave the ship. Thanks so much.

Hi Patricia,
We went on the same boat March 2018. I don't remember specifically what time we got on the boat but think it was mid-afternoon. We flew in from Rio the morning we left, caught a transfer to the boat and seemed to be one of the last to get on. We had to debark at 8:00 a.m. which was a hassle because our flight didn't leave until 11:00 p.m that evening. We scheduled a tour of Manaus, which we shortened, and checked into a hotel near the airport (super reasonable $) for a shower and nap before our long flight home. Iberostar is a top notch company and the boat runs right on schedule for all of their scheduled events. It departed and arrived right on schedule. March is the rainy season so expect rain. We got lucky and had very little rain. However, the times it did rain it was a major downfall! It was a wonderful adventure. Enjoy!

Gracias!!!!!!!

Would like to do a cruise on the Amazon but most trips seem to be on the Rio Negro. Are Amazon cruises possible? Can anyone recommend a cruise?

is February a good time to visit the Amazon River

Gostaria de saber quais são os pontos de saídas dos passeios no Rio Amazonas, a faixa de preço e se consigo ir até o Peru, sem o passeio de volta pois quero ir fazer a trilha inca.
