It is the largest heritage district in Santiago. Its streets and avenues are a permanent evocation of the cultural and architectural wealth of the 19th and 20th centuries. For some years, the residents themselves have promoted the recovery of their spaces, generating community access to the history and heritage present in their streets, cultural centers, museums and churches.
Its name is a tribute, from the authorities of the time, to the triumph of Chile in the Battle of Yungay, on January 20, 1839. That historical event was perpetuated with the creation of this urban site, a gesture that was crowned with Yungay Square and the beautiful sculpture that shows a soldier, the Chilean Broken, as a faithful symbol of those who participated in that heroic gesture.
The architectural beauty of this neighborhood is represented by the contrast between the buildings built for aristocratic families and those intended for family groups and their communal life in cités and convents.
But the growth of the city and the displacement of the elite to neighborhoods like Brazil and Concha y Toro, caused Yungay to acquire a more popular character. In turn, this neighborhood was the focus of the intellectual avant-garde of the mid-19th century, being the scene of the Literary Movement of 1842. Throughout history, prominent national and foreign intellectuals lived and gathered in this sector, such as Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, who was later President of Argentina, Bartolomé Mitre, Ignacio Domeyko, Eusebio Lillo, Joaquín Edwards Bello, Nicanor Parra and Violeta Parra, among others.
In March 2022, the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, chose a beautiful Huérfanos street house as his residence.
Scattered among its streets are true treasures that account for the validity of that spirit. It highlights the network of museums inserted in Parque Quinta Normal, such as the National Museum of Natural History, Museo Parque Ferroviario or the Museum of Contemporary Art. This offer is enriched by the Museum of Memory, the Matucana 100 Cultural Center and the Santiago Library.
Neighborhood life still flows serenely in the passages Hurtado Rodríguez, Adriana Cousiño and Lucrecia Valdés, an atmosphere that contrasts with the Attraction generated, in domestic and foreign visitors, gastronomic proposals of the level of the typical restaurant El Huaso Enrique or the French Hairdresser.
In this context, it highlights the work of the community that has organized to preserve this heritage and join the activities of cultural centers, museums, artistic workshops and foundations, to shape a consolidated and recognized cultural circuit of Santiago and Chile.
Yungay was declared a Typical Zone in 2009.

There are several historical places of interest, charming passages and heritage buildings that you can visit.
We found very good infrastructure for work meetings, events and quality cultural spaces.
Really recommended for work days; very good prices.

Be very careful if you go to this area… Dangerous with a lot of guns around… Eric Garvin an American lawyer was on vacation.
He was murdered in this neighborhood. Shot here for no reason, while he was taking a photograph of a building … Be aware… Perhaps go with a group…

Just walk around and check out the architecture and street mural art. You can plan to start your day at Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos and the proceed to walk Barrio Yungay and hit a spot for lunch. Then step into the Museo del Sonido a new museum on the history of sound. Get out of Centro Santiago and check out the real Santiago

It is an old barrio with houses from some decades ago, overall unimpressive. The best part is Parque Quinta Normal with a nice green area and several (simple) museums.
