We heard some bad stories about safety, so didn’t really know what to expect. We took the teleferiqo around 10.30 am and started our climb. The total route to the summit and back is 10 km. In the beginning the path goes up and down quite gradually, but gets more difficult towards the end. There the path gets narrow and less clear. You have to climb some rocks and walk through loose sand. No previous experience is necessary. Bring warm clothes as it can be freezing cold at the top.
We didn’t feel unsafe, but we advice to climb in the morning as most people will do so and the weather conditions are often better.

A really unique opportunity to hike at high elevation that is conveniently located at the edge of town. well maintained trail and lots of easy to follow markers. Dress for the weather though and watch out for lighting.

Did this hike with Latin American Alpine, and it's a very nice hike. It is amazing that a short cable car ride can take one from an urban area full of people to a mountainous open space so quickly. Once off the cable car, the views are expansive. The hike initially is a little steep, and more eroded road than trail. Eventually the trail become more of a trail. There are great views along the way, a cave that makes a great snack stop, and eventually, a rocky scramble to the summit. While I did this as my last activity of the trip, it would make a superb acclimatization hike for us lowlanders. I used a guide from Latin American Alpine (via trip advisor). It certainly can be done without a guide, however the guides knowledge was very helpful with using alternate routes, recognizing weather patterns and getting us off the summit before the lightning storm started, and using an alternate route lower down that avoided an exposed ridge during the lightning.

The problem with many of the reviews under this heading is that different experiences with different routes are all grouped together under: RUCU Pichincha. Rucu means cluster in English. In this case it is meant to mark an area with different parts of a mountain: crater rim, pre summit, main summit, a hilltop with antenna etc. This review is about CUMBRE, the highest point of the cluster at 4696m (>15,000 Feet) taking the south route from the arrival station of the teleferico at 3947m (12,950 Feet).
The route is 4 km in length. The elevation difference is 749m. While the lower first part of the route is easy and gradually up following a good trail, the second higher part involves two pitches with rocks where you have to use your hands and climb, a tiresome hike through scree and again near the summit scrambling over rocks (like a staircase, using hands and feet).
For experienced climbers this route is indeed easy (technical difficulty 1), for the inexperienced hiker it is difficult.
Moreover you have to take into account that this is a high altitude route roughly between 4000 and 4700 meters. You do not get acclimatized to this altitude by staying a couple of days in Quito at 2800m. When you get dizzy, go down.
Another important factor is the weather. If it is foggy you will have difficulty finding the markers. It can be very windy and rain/snow, without a windproof jacket and warm clothes you may easily get cold, develop hypothermia and die. Take sunglasses and suncream, some food and water. Wear good non skid shoes.
The TeleferiQo company recommends a guide to do this route. After doing it I support this recommendation or at least to go with an experienced climber. It took me (age 65) and a friend (age23) 2 hours to get from the teleferico arrival station to the summit (cumbre). The weather was fine. We took it very easy to get down in also two hours.

I am an inexperienced climber and Rucu Pichincha was recommended as my first acclimation climb which I could do on my own, with 4 guided higher elevation volcanos coming later. It was a good recommendation. After a day in Quito, I took the teleferico up first thing in the morning. Clouds roll in pretty reliably every morning so important to get an early start. The teleferico has different opening times on different days, so check it out beforehand. This takes you to 12,000 ft and conserves you’re energy for cling to the top of Rucu Pichincha. The vast majority of this climb is a steady, well marked and well traveled upward path. You will get winded, and I saw more than one person losing their breakfast as the elevation got to them. Great views here. But if you have a couple days in Quito beforehand, and take it slow and steady, it is manageable. As you reach the base of what appears to be more mountainous, it gets a little trickier. I could see a few people ahead of me, which was helpful, because the markings for the trail become pretty terrible. Not sure I would have found my way on my own. From that point there are some steep areas, and some which are difficult to traverse. For an experienced climber, this would be easy. But for the inexperienced, I think you could easily get hurt if not pretty cautious and sure on your feet. After about 3 more hours, I made it to the summit with plenty of time to get down as the clouds started rolling in. A great first climb which successfully led to my next higher volcano, then the next...

Let me clarify the title by saying it is not a difficult hike to the summit however you are above 15,000 feet so you need to be in good physical shape and/or altitude acclimated. I've been to the summit it twice so this trip was with my son and granddaughter, her first mountain experience.
You can drive to the Refugio, which may or may not be opened. From there it is a straight forward uphill hike to the crater rim. Turn to the right for the official summit and marker or left to a lower summit and marker. We turned to the right and a few minutes later my granddaughter was starting panic because of the strong wind. So I took her hand and we went up to the lower summit (15300 feet) and watch across the crater as my son made it to that summit. The hike down was easy.
The dirt road to the refugio is very rough in places and even in 4-wheel drive we had a few problems but it is doable.
This mountain would be a good intro to mountain hiking and climbing at altitude. The worst part, in my opinion, is dealing with the traffic in Quito!
