The Andean bear experience is certainly a must.
Staying in the lodge, certainly not.
For a couple of reasons:
1. The lodge is slow in its communication and will not confirm your room until very close to your travel date. The same slowness will be shown in case of your complaints.
2.My room was literally IN the restaurant area. The noise of the restaurant area was completely in it.
3. The room’s door’s top part was made of glass, therefore the light of the restaurant area was also completely in the room.
4. The shower had a primitive electric system so I did not have proper hot water.
I informed the management about my frustration, requested a partial refund and told they can not sell those rooms in the restaurant area unless a customer is sure to accept these conditions with the unfair price tag of such accomodation. The lodge does not seem to care about these customer feedbacks.

We had 2 nights here at the beginning of our trip and loved it. The place is rustic and basic but it was very comfortable. Family run.
The walks were not overly difficult, very muddy but what do you expect if you travel in the wet season, there was only one that my wife did and I did not but our guide pitched them well so that despite my mobility issues I was able to see a great deal of the area. Sitting watching the hummingbirds was mesmerising, unfortunately due to the pandemic and the holiday being moved 3 times we ended up not going at a time when it might have been possible to see the Spectacle Bears but there was plenty of other things to see
Food was excellent, in fact some of the best food we had during our visit to Ecuador, set meals but they were all very tasty, predominantly local dishes. We had Tilapia the first night which we hadn't had for years and it was delicious.
Only slight criticism was that the shower wasn't brilliant but it did not detract from the experience in the slightest, we have had worse!
The principles behind the reserve are to re-establish the cloud forest and they have started well and hopefully will continue to expand. Certainly well worth a visit

Beautiful location! The guides were very knowledgeable and provided a great experience. Discussing with the owners was wonderful as well to learn about the history of the reserve.

I had such a great time here! I travelled with a group of other students. The family is very knowledgeable about the surrounding environment and highly encourages conservation. We went on a few land tours, had a fantastic lunch, and learned about the backstory of the reserve. We all had an awesome time and I highly recommend visiting! I hope to go back in the future.

We had an excellent day at the lodge. We arrived early in the morning and were served a delicious breakfast with coffee grown on the property. Before we arrived three trackers had been out really, really early in the morning locating bears. After we finished eating, we geared up and followed our guide directly to a bear eating in a tree. It was AMAZING. The bear climbed down, scurried off. The trackers then notified our guide of three more bears. We hiked to that area and found them, including an adorable cub! Cuteness overload!! We then hiked to a beautiful waterfall before enjoying a delicious lunch. Communication with the organization was easy over WhatsApp. Our guide Mauricio was knowledgeable about plants and animals— he whistled and the birds sang back. Great day!!

I was unsure quite what to expect when I booked a 3 day stay at Maquipucuna. I wanted a quiet space to celebrate nature, to meditate, to contemplate, and to explore with curiosity and imagination. I found just that.
Between visiting the Galapagos and traveling deep into the Amazon, we spent 3 days at the Maquipucuna Reserve. From the moment we arrived, Isabel made sure we were comfortable and engaged, educated and nourished. She was nothing less than phenomenal. Despite our very late arrival (after 9 PM) on a Thursday evening, she willingly agreed to take us on a night time walking tour into the forest, where we discovered an amazing collection of insects and more -- even bio-luminescent fungi! Our guides were wonderful and the landscape was truly divine.
While we enjoyed many guided walks -- looking for birds and bears and other life in the forest -- it was really the quiet walks alone on the paths that yielded the greatest sense of connectedness with nature. There was a beautiful vibrancy to being immersed in the forest like this. All that Isabel taught us about the interconnectedness of EVERYTHING in the forest made the experience that much more meaningful. It was a deeply restorative stay -- one that I'm not sure I could have experienced elsewhere. So appreciative to have had this experience.

We loved Maquipucuna- we came during the short period of time annually that they are visited by Andean bears and it was an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience. We loved watching the bears (from a safe distance), and we also saw lots of beautiful birds and insects. The family that runs the reserve is great, it’s a beautiful place, the accommodations and clean and comfortable, and the food is great. Highly recommend even outside of bear season as a wonderful place to spend a long weekend hiking and exploring.

I was only there for the day to get to hike around and spend time in nature. It really is such a beautiful incredible place. I didn’t stay in the actual rooms so I can’t comment on that. I hiked 2 out of the 6+ trails around the preserves and if you are a plant freak this is a place of dreams.
There are all kinds of birds and if you are there around Nov I guess there are more Andean bears there to eat a special type of avocado they love.
I think the story is incredible and the type of place I hope people support. It is a private reserve and NGO and they are trying to build a whole region of sustainable conservation. They work with local communities. The guide I had had been working there for years and was very knowledgeable and passionate. Its so beautiful and relaxing and everyone was really friendly and welcoming.
There are all kinds of birds and if you are there around Nov I guess there are more Andean bears there to eat a special type of avocado they love.
I think the story is incredible and the type of place I hope people support. It is a private reserve and NGO and they are trying to build a whole region of sustainable conservation. Muy recomendado para apreciar la naturaleza y hacer actividad física. Los anfitriones son excelentes. El lugar es muy bonito. Se aprecia flora y fauna silvestre en abundancia. Hay lindos vados para bañarse en el río.

Hola. Cada año varía la época de fructificación de Pacches, que es la fruta que atrae a los osos. Depende de la lluvia y el clima en general y también de donde comieron los osos la temporada anterior. Este año le apostamos a unas semanas entre Noviembre y Enero. El fanpage de Facebook de Maquipucuna Reserve & Ecolodge indicará cuando han llegado los osos.
