Alors, toute une aventure ici... Nous avons passé une 10’ne de jours dans la Vallée.
Je ne dirais pas qu’elle est plus belle que la Vallée de la Colca, car chacune ont leur charme.
Par contre, ici pas de touristes, il vaut mieux parler espagnol. Contact direct avec la vie quotidienne des habitants car pas aussi bien achalandee pour les touristes que la Vallee de la Colca. Les gens sont accueillants, mais pour le moment, partout où nous sommes allés, je n’ai trouvé que des péruviens accueillants (ça fait 1 mois que nous sommes au Perou).
Le moins est l’absence de chemins de randonnées clairement indiqués (grande différence d’avec la Vallée de la Colca).
De notre côté, m’étant foulée la cheville avant d’arriver ici, on se l’est joué, la plupart du temps, comme les habitants, c’est à dire déplacements en bus. Et ça vaut le détour.
Cotahuasi est la capitale. Perso j’ai bien aimé son ambiance, et je dois dire que ça fait du bien de temps en temps un bon lit, car ça n’est pas le cas partout dans la Vallée (selon les endroits c’est un peu à la dure ;o) Comptez entre 40 S et 60 S pour une chambre matrimoniale avec sdb, wifi, eau chaude. Même si vous arrivez tôt (bus d’Arequipa départ 19h arrivée 4h), les hôtels sont faciles à trouver (sonnez).
Quelques miradors ici, et une lagune qui était un peu asséchée lors de notre visite.
Après 1 nuit ici, départ pour Alca an bus (à partir de 7h toutes les heures de la place). On y passé 2 nuits (il n’y a que 2 hôtels, chambre 40 S). A pied, vous pouvez facilement aller a Luicho (env 30mns) ou les bains thermaux (3 piscines dont 1 couverte, entre 4 et 7S. Il y a des resto là mais un peu chers) et un chemin qui longe la rivière pour revenir un peu plus long. Comptez 20mns de plus pour Luicha qui a des piscines privees et sauna (de 4S a 8S). Le 2eme jour, collectivo a 5h du mat pour Puyca et visite des ruines incas qui valent vraiment le détour. Lieu magique, paisible. Retour par le même collectivo vers 13h. Il y a de quoi dormir et manger à Puyca.
Puis retour à Cotahuasi avec une autre nuit là (pratique pour faire le linge etc.). Dans la journée, bus pour Tomepampa où on a mangé dans le seul resto existant (fait aussi cantine pour les ecoliers), très bon, puis marche jusqu'à Taurisma où on a vu personne... Puis reprise du bus pour Cotahuasi.
Le lendemain, bus à 5.30 du mat du Terminal Terrestre pour Quechualla (11S). Arrivée env 3h après. 2 lieux où dormir. nous sommes allés chez Victor et Victorina (WiFi, eau chaude, chambre à 30S). Famille très sympathique. Descente à Ushua où il y a une cascade (le point le plus profond du canyon). Seuls au monde! Baignade à poil!! Et bon massage de la catarata !
Le lendemain, départ tôt pour 3h de marche jusqu'à Vellinga, que j'ai adoré ! Bon la journée les villages semblent abandonnés car les villageois sont aux champs (chakra) mais c’est bel et bien habité. Nous sommes restés 2 nuits chez Angelica et Ignacio (seul hôtel, 20S le lit, eau chaude). Les matelas c’est pas trop ça.... Il y a d’autres possibilités de logement chez les villageois, mais bon, faut voir... 3 endroits font à manger, chez Delphina et Anita (pas eu besoin du 3eme). Réservez à l’avance qu’elles prévoient pour vous. Il y a certainement des randonnées à faire autour mais de notre côté c’était contact avec les habitants, cueillette de fruits, et repos.
Après la 2eme nuit, bus à 9h pour la catarata de Sipia (bus qui va à Cotahuasi). Oui elle vaut vraiment le détour, et encore une fois, seuls au monde! Retour une partie à pied direction Cotahuasi et en route prise d’un collectivo (une fois passé l’embranchement où se rejoignent les routes pour Toro, Cotahuasi etc. il y a des chances d’en croiser).
Une autre nuit à Cotahuasi, puis prise du bus de 13h30 pour Pamparmaca (il y en a un aussi à 5h du mat). Vues magnifiques. Partie du Canyon plus verte qu’à Alca. Mais fait froid dès 6h/7h... Logement très spartiate à 35S sans eau chaude, et chambre à courant d’air.... Ok pour 1 nuit. Pas de resto (nous y sommes allés un samedi, et apparemment le week-end nada para comer). Une dame qui tient un tiendq sur la place fait à manger la semaine). Marche facile jusqu'au mirador d’uskune. Magnifique! On repart le lendemain avec bus de 7h (un autre à 16h) car cheville douloureuse etc...
Bref au final, oui Vallée magnifique mais qui vous a à la dure... Appréciez !

I was in Cañon de Cotahuasi for 5 days (Aug 2022). Bus from Arequipa Terminal Terrestre = S/35. I booked a guide for 3 days trekking to guide me through the Cañon. The whole experience was fantastic. We went through many different landscapes; saw Condors; stayed in villages and lived as the locals live (very basic conditions). I booked Pepe ( viajes.cotahuasi@gmail.com / asoturs-cotahuasi@hotmail.com +51 958 747 794 ). Pepe is not a professional guide but a local - he lives in Visbe, and speaks Quechua and Spanish. He knows the landscape and the people and their culture, very well. I am always questioning and he could always answer my questions. I met and was involved with working the fields with his family and friends. The next day I went to Baños Termales Luido - 40 degrees C (S/7 gives you access to all three pools) = wonderful after long days trekking. At either end of my 5 days I stayed in Cotahuasi town with Meylin, in a room which could take at least 4 people; there was ferociously hot water (solar) S/20 a night. Meylin made me breakfast (S/7) and lunch, when required. She also makes gorgeous cakes to order! So you can order a cake to eat during your stay. Throughout my time in the Cañon, I learned a lot; took hundreds of pictures of the diverse landscapes; practiced my Spanish and absolutely did not want to return to the real world. Life in the Cañon is magical, though very hard for the alpaca farmers who live at high altitude.

It is very recommendable to hike trough the Cotahuasi Cañon. You can reach the town of Cotahuasi easily by bus from Arequipa. There is only night busses from various companies that leave at Arequipa's terminal at around 7 p.m. You are going to arrive in Cotahuasi around 3 a.m. where you can find cheap hostels at around 10 to 20 soles per person. You can just ring the bell at night. You can find information in Cotahuasi from a man called Milko who owns a small touristic souvenir shop close to the main plaza. Just ask around for him, he provided us with loads of info. He is also organizing tours if you are interested. From Cotahuasi on there is plenty of things to do with a very good public transportation system:

In every town mentioned you can find cheap accommodation and also something to eat. We went to Pampamarca in the afternoon to see the Bosque de piedras at the next day. After spending one more night in Pampamarca we went to Cotahuasi again and took on the same day a bus to Charcana. In the following morning we walked to Quechualla, which is a really nice town! Afterwards we went to Velinga a small town between Quechualla and Cotahuasi which is only reachable by foot but the town I liked the most! Even though it might be harder to find information about the Cañon de Cotahuasi it is very much worth the effort. Go and try out for yourself!

The place to be in Peru😍
I stayed 6 nights in casa Primavera in tomepampa. Bus from arequipa stops almost in front of the door. Little village from were you can do many day or longer treks or visit the hotsprings.
I went for 2 nights by bus (5soles) to puyca to see the beautiful ruïnes. Nobody there, beautiful trip as well. I walked past the ruïnes to see the other gorge and have a fantastic vieuw on the ruïnes.
Also took a bus to pampamarca to see the roqas de Wito, first picture. Amazing!! Hike up the mountains i quit steep, 2 hours. You can take the bus at cotahuasi at 5 AM, do the hike and go to the vieuwpoint in town to see the waterfall and take the bus back.
Also went to Ancara to see the condors take a bath but when u was there there were no condors. Still a beautiful hike. Take a bus to ariquipe. Het off at the vieuwpoint Alhuay and walk down to the condor vieuwpoint, ancara, lomo and the sipia waterfall. 3 days a week there s a bus in the end of the Day from quechalla to cotahuasi. I drives bij the waterfall.
There s much more beautiful hikes.
Important: there s a weekly bus to nazca/ Lima. Thuesday morning
And Reyna bus dromen Arequipe is Michael beter then the other company. It leaves daily at 19 h from Arequipe

We are an avid hiking family and the Cotahuasi canyon was spectacular. So many hot springs, so many waterfalls, very few tourists, in other words a hiker's paradise. Our agency Machupicchu Center put together a superb itinerary in this area, the only draw back is that in order to get to the off-beaten path, they had to choose hotels that are considered 2-star or homestays by western standards, but they were clean, comfortable and the owners are typically locals that are so welcoming and friendly, we were treated very special. Food was just so delicious, my wife got some cooking lessons and brought some of the spices from the region to get that special peruvian flavor.

Es un cañon muy lindo y el mas profundo con muchas atracciones, visite los baños de luicho, catarata de sipia, bosque de cactus gigantes de judiopampa. Realice el trekking de Charcana (pueblo alto a 3500 metros) a Quechualla (en lo mas profundo del cañon) es una intensa aventura en la que es posible ver paisajes hermosos e impresionantes y observar el condor, los pueblos son pequeños y sencillos pero vale mucho visitar este lugar, conocer las costumbres tradicionales y recorrerlo. Si te gusta la aventura salvaje este lugar es hermoso y una gran opcion

tout le canyon est somptueux, ne pas manquer les chutes d'eau de Sipia, les villages de Cotahuasi, de Alca, Ttoepampa et cerise sur le gateau l'église de taurisma

It might be tiring to get there (night bus arrives at 3am), but it is definitely worth it!
Cotahuisa is the perfect town from where you can do all kinds of excursions - single day or multi-day. There are plenty of options! Definitely stop by the tourist office (open mon-fri), they are very friendly and helpful!
We especially liked:
- Hike from catarata de sipia to Quechualla,
- Pampamarca: bosque de rocas,
- Thermal baths (we did Luicho but others are probably nice as well),
- Climbing cerro Huiñao and hike to Tomepampa,
... but there is so much more to discover!
This is (in our opinion) a better and more impressive alternative to Colca canyon. There aren't many tourists and the people are very friendly!
There are hospedajes in every town so it's very easy to visit different towns and stay the night (and cheap as well!).
Only the bus hours are a bit of a hassle. They often leave very early (around 5am) and come back at noon. Ask around for the exact hours!
Speaking Spanish is quite handy as the people don't speak English.
If you have the time to go there (minimum stay 4-5 days), we would definitely recommend!

Quechualla at the bottom of the canyon is a superb village oasis, and I stayed in a pleasant homestay with good meals. The Cotahuasi Quechualla road is spectacular (one morning bus).
Then Pampamarca, a traditional Andean village, with good hiking, great views and ancient terraces. The hospedaje here is so so (one daily bus).
I was the only tourist at both places.
The town of Cotahuasi is less interesting.
The weather is much more stable in rainy months than in the high Andes.
The road has been much improved and the comfortable busses from Arequipa take 8 hours. But a reason the tourists don't come is the horrible schedules of all the busses, both ways, departure 6 or 7 pm and arrival around 3 am ! You can't appreciate the scenery along the way ! And who would want to arrive anywhere at 3am ?

Does anyone have information about trekking through the canyon without a guide? Wanting to do a 4-5 day trek without having to hike in and out of the canyon each day and instead setting up camp down there. Having a hard time finding information on the canyon in general especially for a self guided trek.

There is various day trips you can do from Cotahuasi but it is not possible to do a day trip from Arequipa. You can ask for Milko once you reach Cotahuasi he organizes tours.

cuanto demoro en llegar a Cotahuasi en una movilidad privada 4x4?
cuanto tiempo necesito para conocer el lugar? 2 o 3 días?
por lo menos unos 4 dias 3 noches, el tiempo de llegada es de 6 horas aproximadamente, el problema es que el camino de chiquibamba a cotahuasi todavia es afirmado y algo sinuoso
