A highlight in our trip: seeing so many beautiful animals being treated the way they should be. The workers visibly give them so much love and are very passionate and involved with every single animal. Will never forget our visit!!! Thank you Alberto for your explanations and guiding us. We got the opportunity to feed alpaca’s, monkeys, parrots and more…

On the way to Pisac stop to pay a visit to this recovery center of abused animals, here they are cared for, cared for and rescued with love. The main reason for our visit was to be able to see the condors up close, in case of no sighting during the hike to Colca Canyon.
In addition to the condors there is a puma, ares and parrots, Andean bears, llamas, alpacas, deer, a toucan and some after treatment can return to freedom.
The sanctuary is clean and well maintained and the volunteer boys, with great enthusiasm accompanied us for the visit, are very well informed and answer every question. Very sad the story of the cougar recovered from a disco, still a little battered but in the process of recovery. The visit is also a help to advance the center and I agree with most of the visitors who deserve our support.
At the end of the tour there is a small souvenir shop but no one forced us to buy anything.

We had a free day so looked on trip adviser and found this place not too far away. We booked a private taxi and wanted to please ourselves with timings etc. When we arrived, we asked about the VIP experience as wanted to feed the animals if possible. The owner/manage took us round the whole place explaining the awful stories behind many of the animals here, and how humans had exploited and not looked after them properly. As with any zoo/sanctuary you always feel they could be bigger etc but I did feel that they genuinely care for the animals and are trying to give them better lives. We enjoyed every bit, especially being able to feed the animals such as tortoise, deer, parrots, llamas. Would recommend a private tour and private transfer so you can spend as much/little time as you wish here.

I spent 10 days in Cusco and this was by far my favourite day out. 10/10 visit, loved every second!
My guide was very knowledgable about each individual animal, knowing their back story and what will happen to them in the future.
I love their mission, they want the animals to be free if possible and back into the wild. If this isn’t possible they’ll live a happy life at the sanctuary.
They have so many animals at the moment including the mighty condor, pumas, parrots, bears, coati, llamas, alpacas, deer, even a toucan! You can get up close and personal without stressing the animal out so this is the most ethical animal attraction ever!
I got the bus from Cusco town which was really easy and only cost 9 soles round trip (details on the bus on their website main page). It takes about half an hour. If you don’t want to get the bus I think an uber or taxi wouldn’t be that much. I also heard you can visit here with get your guide website (and probably trip advisor).
There is also a cafe and gift shop here - some of the proceeds from the gift shop go towards the sanctuary so I got my souvenirs here.
This place definitely deserves more visitors and support, they do amazing work! I think this place is suitable for everyone, kids and adults should love it! I think it was quite accessible also, a few stairs in places but generally good for accessibility.

I would like to highly recommend Cochahuasi animal sanctuary! This is a very special place which is worth every cent and minute of your time. The guides are highly knowledgable and nurture the animals with so much love and attention. You can interact with the animals, learn about their stories, and the work of the sanctuary to rehabilitate them. Please book and enjoy this outstanding experience!

They arranged a wonderful driver to pick us up. He only spoke Spanish but he and my husband managed to communicate quite well. We had an english speaking guide, and we were able to get so close to the Peruvian condor that it was amazing. He told us which animals they are rehabbing to be released back into the wild and the rescue animals from people who have to stay. One toucan had been used by his previous owners to open bottles, which eventually destroyed his beak. 2 years later, it has grown back. Some of the released animals have returned and stay there, so you know they are getting great care. Amazing experience.

The tour from "Transport to cochahuasi animal shelter" on Viator.com was an excellent choice to see the sanctuary. I was picked up at 830 am from my hotel and once we reached the sanctuary I had a private 1 hour tour with the director. The animals were being fed breakfast so all were out and about. I asked if wings of the various birds were clipped to prevent them from flying but nope, the birds choose to stay on their own out in the open. I loved that one of the female Andean goose kept following the director who would pet her and she would coo. My main reason was to see the Andean condors up-close. I was pleasantly surprise that they had a spectacled bear who was named Juliette.

Animals’ enclosures were very small and animals looked sad and crowded. Birds had very little room to fly. We visited after heavy rain and there was very little grass in the enclosures for the alpacas/llamas. Definitely not a “sanctuary”.

I see that it is easy to get a shared van to the sanctuary, but I’d like to go on to Pisac after the sanctuary. What would be a good way to do that? Thanks!
Skrevet 4. mars 2019
I'm not sure how you would return, thought the sanctuary can likely arrange transportation to Pisac from there. Suggest you contact them, or contact driver in Cuzco.
Skrevet 4. mars 2019
Hi, How could I get there by colectivo from Cusco? Where I need to take the colectivo??
Skrevet 27. desember 2017
Oh I am sorry that I missed the question. I am afraid I do not know.

Hello, the link to the website is not working. How do you buy tickets and arrange transport? Would like to visit Sanctuary in a couple weeks. thank you.
Skrevet 6. februar 2016
They run completely on donation and as Kieth mentioned they do have a sight seeing bus of their own, I have a couple of e-mail addresses and phone numbers but can not post them here, if you would like them just message me.

I don't know the hours for the animal sanctuary, but it might help you to know there is another good site to visit that's extremely close (a little farther up the road from Cuzco). I don't know its name, but it's like a living museum of llamas, alpacas, vicunas, etc. and it has exhibits and demonstrations of wool processing and weaving, native food plant varieties, and more. It includes a very nice gift shop of well-made artisan items. So if you arrive too early for the animal sanctuary, you might go to this place first and the sanctuary second.

A que hora salen las van de la plaza de armas a Cochahuasi?
Skrevet 11. juli 2015
Yo no conozco la plaza de armas, estuve de paso entre pisac y cuzco fue de pasada que visité
Skrevet 21. februar 2019
How far is it from Cusco? from Pisac? Is the Awanachancha llama farm close by?
Skrevet 5. juni 2015
Yes, it's close to both Cusco and Pisac, an hour. The llama preserve is across the street. The Cch. Sanctuary has vicunas, alpacas and llamas but the condors highlight the visit, especially if you arrange a flying demonstration.
