A very quiet location that probably sees very few tourists. Amazing stonework at this pre-Inca gateway to the region.

This is a biased review because 1. I did not do it as part of a larger tour package, 2. We didn’t pay anything to enter because there was not a soul to be found anywhere inside to charge us, and 3. I went with a close friend who was able to tell me about the history of the place which gave it more meaning and context. Tarawasi is situated in a beautiful valley about 2 hours from Cusco. If you have a full day to go to Limatambo I really recommend it as the town has a lot of character and is off the tourist track. I do NOT recommend visiting Tarawasi from Cusco as a trip in and of itself unless you have time to hang out in Limatambo, or are passing through on your way to someplace else. We walked up from where we were staying in Limatambo, which was about a 20-minute walk. We also ran into a few of the local people, who let us try some chicha, an alcoholic beverage made from fermented corn. That also added to the experience...

So the positive is the guy that organised our tour was super pleasant and helpful plus communicated via text which was great. Furthermore the value was good (confirmed by a local mate).

The negative was the transfers at 3am (reality 4am) were confusing and unclear I.e you get a taxi that takes you to a bus that takes you to the train. The English Machu Picchu tour run by Grupo Pedro started at 1045 but we arrived at 9am so had explored much of Machu Picchu before the tour started.

Overall good people but all a bit too disjointed and confused.

We booked two back to back tours with this tour group after walking past their stand in Cusco. The first day was Pisco/Ollantaytambo/Cinchero and the second was Moray and Maras. Pros: a great deal cost-wise, and included lunch during the first day. The guide also translated both in English and Spanish for most of the trip. (Though often forgot to translate some things into English since the overwhelming majority was Spanish speaking only). Cons: the first day had several unadvertised stops at several markets, as well as several times where salespeople were picked up and sold various products en route while the bus was traveling to the next destination. The overall trip duration was several hours longer than advertised due to this.

Additionally, the tour guide at one point gave a 10 minute (plus translation) "history" that was false. Followed by a joking statement that you can make anything up for tourists and we'd believe it. And THEN told the real story. Funny, except most stops allow only an hour-- a pitifully small amount of time at such epic places such as Ollantaytambo-- and really did not delve at all into the necessary information. Overall the days felt rushed and we SAW the locations but did not have time to truly enjoy it. I would NOT book this tour again. (Given the disclaimer that we had the same tour guide both days and it may have been due to our experience with him and others may be better.)

We cooperated with Tarawasi travel to organize a trip to Macchu Picchu while being in Cuzco and had one issue with this agency: We communicated that we wanted to climb Huyana Picchu and were told that this was possible the same. So we decided to go. After paying, just when showing up for the transfer to Aquas Calientes we were told that there weren't any permits anymore for Huyana Picchu. What a bummer - this was something crucial for us. The agent was not very cooperative or understanding, and we were not able to reschedule our trip to Macchu Picchu and ended up not climbing Huyana Picchu.
The rest of the trip was ok, but I would recommend to communicate very clearly with this travel agency and ensure that you don't get cheated on.

During the Inca Empire only nobility lived in fine masonry homes. If the population of the empire was more than 6 million, less than 7 thousand were 'apus' (nobility / divinities). The Inca nobility was not like the european one, they were considered 'apus' (gods) and 'common people' existed for the only purpose of serving them. Common people were considered to have no soul and they lived in shacks made of branches and ichu (a kind of hay). Noble families or 'panakas' lived in great halls. Limatambo was one of this valleys reserved for nobility and its bigger hall was Tarawasi. Until the 'agrarian reform' of the 1970's it was a proud home and plantation or 'hacienda' as it came to be known in spanish. Now after being expropiated from their owners it is a cultural and turistic attraction
