Such a good and interesting place to visit while in Iquitos. Very informative and accessible outside Iquitos.
Your visit supports the project.
It is better if you go with a tour guide so you can also visit other places on the way.

After our Amazon River cruise on the way back to Iquitos, the tour stopped by the Manatee Rescue Center. The center works on rehabilitating manatees and other Amazonian animals back to the wild. For animals that cannot be rehabilitated, the center will take care of them or release them to the preserve nearby. Our guide there was very warm and polite to us. He was informative and told us how the center worked and how it was founded. He is very dedicated to preserving the rainforest and hopes that we learn how to do our part.

It was nice to take a walk through part of the Amazon and learn about the program to save Manatees. I also liked seeing the white sandy piece of jungle.

A beautiful place where you learn about the dangers that many animals in our Amazon face, the Huayo forest is the best for photos, fair and affordable prices. Nearby places to eat, if they carry repellent and sunscreen, we forgot because on Monkey Island they asked us not to use it.

We went to Iquitos for the first time and as many videos in the area encourage self-tourism to places with a low budget, the truth is that this is never true, when the motocars tell you the price to get there, which in In our case he told us 20 soles when we arrived, he forced us to give them 50 soles, we had to defend ourselves because it was not the agreed price, due to our reluctance he ended up threatening us that he would disappear so we were very afraid that he would do it, despite seeing all the conflict, all the CREA staff simply ignored that we were there, I thought they would help us defend ourselves but that was not the case, they left us adrift, in the end we had to make the motorcar see that we only had 40 soles, the tickets for enter CREA and return, we had no more, he took our money and told us to be careful, the worst of all is that there is no security and no one to turn to in this situation. When we entered CREA the staff were very cool, they didn't tell us anything, whether we were okay or not, they were simply cold, they mentioned the entrance price to pay, Iquitos leaves a lot to be desired, the local people have no empathy at all, They care very little if you die, if they deceive you or assault you, everyone looks out for their own benefit, when we were waiting to be attended to, because priority was given to a unit of foreigners who arrived on a bus plus another school bus student, we had to wait for other people to come and we waited. When two women arrived, we saw the same situation that happened to us, we were unable to intervene due to fear plus the helplessness that they threatened us with and since it is a lawless land where they do whatever they want, we had to be observers, the worst thing was seeing everyone the CREA staff that nothing was happening once again, which gives the impression that this happens every day and the CREA has never done anything or taken its networks to see how to get there and how much we should pay, nothing at all, but yes They pay for reports to supposedly encourage "tourism" when they only want expeditions and large groups, it matters very little to national tourists who go on their own. What was sad was the attitude of the motorcar, the ladies did not have the full amount they had to pay because they were scammed out of 80 soles, they were given 50 soles and this man waited for them outside until they paid the rest, once they had settled His money at the CREA ticket office just left with the full amount. Despite having lived these unpleasant experiences, at least we expected a good tour as seen in the reports that have been contracted with national channels such as Latina, the entire tour was fast, we wanted to know about the plants and their ritual that made us see them on television screens. Latina, but this never happened, the lady simply summarized the plants, skipping several plants that we passed by, and she didn't do any ritual or anything, the videos are super fake, it never happens when you are there, it didn't even last three minutes. tour of the plants, she took us directly to the "photos" section, annoyed by my indignation, I mentioned to her that maybe she doesn't hug the trees, the uncomfortable lady said that they should do it but if she didn't mention it, she simply omitted it once again, and then He said the tour was over. He told us that we had to leave when I mentioned that if we could rest in the trees he flatly refused because it is prohibited, but with what attitude he treated us, we were very disappointed in this treatment, one trying to continue being friendly despite the situation we experienced but They didn't even have empathy, when I asked her about the rafts or the slider that was seen in videos, the lady simply mentioned that there weren't any. Quite a journey that we had to go through to leave the place disappointed. There is a lot to improve in the attention, in the service that they promote but that is never given and to provide ways of solution so that more deceptions do not continue to happen. That in all of Iquitos is the daily bread that never ends.

Beautiful place and seeing that the rescued animals are recovering.
The guide was good. He told us the story of the animals and plants they handle.

Do you have any volunteer opportunities?
Skrevet 2. november 2017
It would be better to contact the centre direct. I did not ask but like most places relying on volunteers, I am sure they always need someone.
Skrevet 8. november 2017
Hi
Were there any Sloth's at the centre and can you hold them?
Skrevet 30. oktober 2017
We had sloths at the centre but we did not hold them and would not have been allowed to. We found out that sloths find being held very stressfull so we just enjoyed watching them.

What's the best way to get to the center and back from Iquitos?
Skrevet 11. mars 2016
You can arrange a tour, via a tour company, but I just took a tuk-tuk. It was $20/soles, each way and the driver waited for me. (They're good about doing that, if you want them to) There are guides there, which are included with the admission fee.
