The trail to pumamarca was much better than this. It didn’t help that my husband was walking so slowly we never seemed to get anywhere and that Veronica was shrouded in cloud. But traversing a treeless mountainside isn’t very exciting.

My fiancé and I trekked the Inca Quarry trail as there were no more permits left for the classic Inca trail by the time we booked. However, this was an amazing alternative hike which I am so glad that we did! It was so beautiful and had archeological sites as well as a Sun Gate and Tombs to visit along the way, too. The main highlight for me was the fact that during our 2 1/2 day hike, we only saw 2 other couples on the path (which was during the morning on the first day). The rest of the time it was just our little group of 5 (which included the guide, too!) hiking in the Andean Mountains! We then got to experience the Inca Rail to Machu Picchu town and go through the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu, too!
The hike wasn’t too strenuous (we’re both fairly fit) but the altitude took it out of us slightly on the second day. Also watch out for when you are descending as it’s quite uneven gravel and I did get a few grazes!
You don’t get the tag of saying you did the ‘classic’ Inca trail which is further in distance, covers more archeological sites and the terrain varies more. However if you’re looking for something a little more personalised then this is your trip!
100% would recommend this hike!

It isn't as hard as it looks, but you must start at 6 am when it's cool. No need to say that the views are amazing. You pass a stream in the first half, afterwards no water anymore. Very quiet, only 7 tourists hiked it today. On the shoulder just a few minutes from the Sun Gate, you can also see a Inca water channel that continues for kilometers. I was back by 2 pm. Some local dog may well follow you all the way up and down.

We went horseback riding beyond the quarry to the sun gate. At the top you see the glacier. It was absolutely glorious. The weather changed through all four seasons. The vegetation also shifted. Nature was displayed in all her glory. Absolutely fabulous. Fierce. Wild. Wonderful.
The trail had some people, but never felt crowded. There are human remains up in the caves. Glad they were undisturbed.

Fantastic views, steady incline, great way to get up into the Andes a bit on a tough but manageable day hike. We googled directions from Moon Travel as recommended by veganonfoot in another review and were able to make a 10 mile circuit from town up past the first quarry and back down through Cachiqata. It took us 6 hours at a pretty slow pace. We were determined to make the trip a loop. It was a little tricky finding our way down but doable. However, as someone who really loves a loop, I think this would also make an excellent out-and-back hike. The descent would have been more gradual if we returned the way we had come. All in all, absolutely gorgeous hike. Not easy but not super steep or technical. Not much shade so be prepared with hats, sunblock, water.

I was researching my hike to MP and was really turned off by the 500 people a day on the trail with you thing that is the “classic Inca trail” hike. Hiking in a mob and a 500 person a night campsite isn’t my idea of fun. If you check with the locals there are like 6 local trails in the same general area all with different traits.
I chose the quarry trial for the waterfall the Mt Veronica views and the no crowds. Plus horses instead of porters which is awesome Legit we were the only three tourists on the trail. The entire time just me and my 2 pals We did see a couple locals which was cool. The waterfall is amazing. The mummies are fascinating. The altitude it higher than the classic Inca trail it tops at almost 15000 -where we did a little ceremony at a shrine for the mountain goddess - so get in shape I’m not kidding.

I'm not sure we actually found the quarry (and the fact that I think that makes me think we didn't), but we were still rewarded with outstanding views of the Sacred Valley, the Urubamba River, the mountainside, and plenty of domestic animals (cows, horses, donkeys, and goats).
I won't even try to describe the route because, again, I'm not sure we "made it", but I'd say this little trek is more about the journey than the destination. I highly recommend strolling along this trail if you're looking for a fun, beautiful, and free activity to do while in Ollantaytambo.
The weather can change pretty quickly, so it's best to bring some options for clothing, including rain coats. Also bring some water, snacks, and sunscreen.

We went with a trek company that started the hike at trail head in Socma, and then came down through the Inca Quarries the next day. Highest point of the trek was around 4500 meters above sea level, where we camped for the night. The trek normally is over 3 days, but we were short on time and finished the hike in 2 days, ending at Ollantaytambo. We were dealing with altitude sickness the first day, which was a steep incline hiking up. Day 2 was a rocky decline coming down through the Inca Quarries. Amazing views along the way, with waterfalls and beautiful scenery of the mountainside and valleys. Saw cows, donkeys, goats, sheep and horses along the hike. Well worth the effort!
