We were on a road trip when we came across the Orchid Island board on the main highway. Since we had even time, we just decided to have a look through the place as Orchid Island was once very famous. The place looked quite run down. We were greeted by a lady who was seated at the spa area. She took us to a local guide named Makeli who gave a brief highlights of the trip. Upon listening to him, we were straight away convinced to go on the 30 mins bush walk tour ($19.80 per head). The tour starts with the visit to a 100 years old Fijian temple which has its own significance and story. Then comes the bush walk. You have to walk over a bridge crossing a small creek hence giving the name orchid "island". The place has some of the animals and wild lives of Fiji - turtles, ducks, snakes, parrots and you will be given a tour across the island . The guide explained quite well about the native plants and flowers present on the island. The place itself is run by locals who earn a living by this service. It was quiet badly damaged during the recent cyclones and has not been fully repaired since then. There is a conner showing the cannibalism history of Fiji as well. Hence if you wanna explore something different and historical then I would suggest this place. It does not have anything fancy but is like an open museum, just simple and historic in its own way.

What this place lacked in actual attraction it made up for with a delightful guide who did everything to entertain my daughter. There were a lot of tall tails going on about 'the stone and the pot used for cannibalism' etc, but it was very entertaining. You will get a pitch for donations to the village as there has been recent flooding, but after paying your $20 entry pp they do accept a no for further support. I held a snake and got to show my daughter the coffee plant, cocoa plant and vanilla plant growing. A slice of real Fijian entrepreneurialism.

At first I was wondering if I was going to get off the bus. The graveled road was muddy from the rains. Our bus backed into our parking spot and we stepped off onto planks that had been placed down for walking. First we headed into the Chief's house. Here we were met by traditionally dressed Fijian young men and the story was told on the history of the house. From here we walked the grounds, led by a local guide or family member. It was on this walk that we were taught the history of Fiji, viewed turtles, saw various plants and even spotted a snake. After the walk we were escorted into an open air building where lunch was going to be provided. It had a tin roof with open sides and a large newly constructed platform in the front for the entertainers. There were plenty of chairs for seating but no tables.

The first performers were 5 Fiji men from the Conservatory of Music that performed traditional war dances and finished with fire dancing. Next came the fire walking ceremony followed by both the men and women dancing. This was followed by the serving of a traditional Fiji lunch consisting of fern, taro root, pineapple, watermelon, lettuce, fish, and chicken drumsticks. The chicken and the fish had been cooked that morning in the ground and it was these rocks and coals that the fire walkers used for their performance. Drink consisted of water only. Finally a farewell song was performed by the men and woman.

I had the pleasure of meeting both Shahid and Naisha, owners of Moana Tours and Orchid Island. Both have a great passion to restore Orchid Island after the devastation caused by Cyclone Winston, the most intense tropical cyclone in the Southern Hemisphere on record.

The day of our visit represented the first day Orchid Island opened for business after Cyclone Winston ripped through the islands in February, 2016. Shahid and Naisha are working hard to restore Orchid Island. All in all this was a great cultural experience and I would certainly do it again.

This place was clearly once something special, however cyclone Winston did a lot of damage. I was told that the impoverished villages have not received any government assistance to reinstate this historical site.

It was the most authentic experience I had whilst in Fiji. If nothing else it was interesting to walk among the exotic tropical plants and to be told about them. Displays, buildings and zoo in desperate need of funding.

Last month we paid a visit to Orchid Island, we were unsure if it was still open or closed down as some reports had written. Our Fijian friend, had remembered being taken there on a school trip some years previously. We soon discovered that it is no longer open and in a sad state of decline. The amazing chiefs bure, is literally falling apart, great gaping gaps in large sections of it, which is very sad. The inside of it is fascinating, the delicate work that has gone in to it is amazing to my western eyes. A local did come out to us and told us that the place had been bought in recent times, and work has started on making it into a tourist attraction, but then it had been left and is now approaching a ruin, well it soon will be. There must be something akin to the National Trust in Fiji, surely they should take this place over, being it is totally run down.

The once thriving tourist locale has now been let run down totally, and there is little of value worth seeing any more.

Directions: Head west on the main road out of Suva for around 15 mins. Orchid island is signed a few minutes after the village of Lami.

Transport: F$15 by taxi, F$1.50 by bus.

I read about Orchid Island on an independent travel blog which described it as something off the beaten track that had to be done in order to experience a slice of authentic Fijian village history. I must say I have to agree.

I arrived and Michael (I hope that is the correct spelling) warmly greeted me before embarking on the tour of his village (which incidentally is not strictly an island, although the river runs around it giving the appearance of one).

The insightful and informative tour included the impressive main temple, the ancient ruins, a guide to the range of trees and flowers, and the relics and old photos portraying the history of cannibalism that have been put up on a display. All elements were thoroughly engaging, it is just a shame that the recent cyclone caused a great deal of damage to the village and some of the displays, some of which are still in the midst of being repaired.

While there is no fee for the tour donations are welcomed and absolutely deserved as Michael was as entertaining as interesting. I rated this experience more highly than the self-guided tour of the Fiji Museum I did earlier the same day.
