We didn't actually get to go inside this cathedral and we sadly missed Mass but you do get to have a look inside from the back. It's quite beautiful. It is also nice to sit outside in one of the cafes with the view of the church in the background...simply stunning.

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (Bosnian: Katedrala Srca Isusova) is a 19th-century Gothic-style Catholic church in the Old Town of Sarajevo. Admission is free and it is open daily except Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Inside there is a marble altar, frescoes and stained glass windows, and in front of it stands a statue of Pope John Paul II.

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Katedrala Srca Isusova) in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina is literally the “brainchild” of two people - the first Archbishop of Vrhbosna (the Catholic archdiocese of the Latin rite in Bosnia and Herzegovina with its center in the city of Sarajevo) Josip Stadler and the architect Josip pl. Vankasha. Fate brought these two undoubtedly outstanding personalities together at one “reference point” in life. It was Katedrala Sarajevo that at a certain stage became for both, if not “the center of the personal Universe,” then somewhere very close.
Historians claim that before the appearance of Katedrala Srca Isusova in Sarajevo there was a Catholic church, the history of which goes back somewhere to the 13th century - the old St. Peter's Cathedral in Vrhbosni. It was probably located somewhere on the left bank of Milacki at the foot of Debelog Brda. Alas, nothing has survived from him. Therefore, after the creation of the Sarajevo Archdiocese, the question of the parish’s own church quite naturally arose. The projects proposed by a number of architects of that time, for some reason, did not satisfy the customer (His Eminence Stadler).
And then a young, but very educated, talented and, most importantly, independent Mr. Vankash appears on the stage. The project he proposed, which combined elements of Romanesque and Gothic styles, delighted the archbishop and in August 1884, construction on Trg Fra Grge Martića began to boil!!! You will be surprised, but the construction of this majestically sacred colossus was completed on November 9, 1887. Only THREE YEARS, Karl!!!
It’s hard to believe something like this now, but it’s true... It must be said that there was still a lot of work to be done on the decoration of the temple, which lasted two whole years. But these are trifles compared to the “world revolution,” as the classics used to say. If we talk about the architecture of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, then we have a three-nave basilica with a characteristic transverse transept. The outer length of the temple is 41.9 meters (with its inner length being 37.65 meters), and the outer width is 21.3 meters (with an inner length of 18.1 meters). You probably noticed the not entirely canonical location of the “body” of the sacral: its apsidal part is located in the north, and the narthex is almost strictly in the south. This is due solely to the fact that the temple was built in the close surroundings of the older urban development of Sarajevo, the configuration of which the architect had to take into account when designing. From left to right along the southern facade, two beautiful bell towers, each 43.2 meters high, pierce the blue sky of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the sharp spiers of simple pyramidal tents, expanded towards the bottom. They seem to frame the side passages, and the middle one is the main one, while visually and architecturally protruding forward to the full width. The high pediment of the southern facade at the roof level is divided into five arcades, four “blind” and one (central) - slightly narrowed, illuminated.
All five mentioned arches are, as it were, “framed” by carved sandstone (like a simplified archivolt). Under the central arch there is a huge blind arch made of the same sandstone, in the field of which there is an eight-petal “rose” window, made of two rows of patterns of elements of the Gothic style. And under the “rose” (for some reason I immediately remembered Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code”) we see the front portal, accented from left to right with early Gothic columns, the pediment of which is decorated with a bas-relief depicting the Holy Trinity. At the top of the portal, partially covering the lower part of the “rose,” there is a statue of the Heart of Jesus (this is a personal gift from Mr. Schwarz, who led the construction, made in Vienna by the sculptor A. Hausmann).
On the ground floor of the western tower there is a baptistery (opposite the entrance there is an aedicule and a white marble font), and in the eastern one there is a staircase leading to the choir and bells.
The Sarajevo Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was built in the early Gothic style, and, according to a number of researchers, the architect Vankas, when developing his project, was impressed by the Church of Notre-Dame de Dijon, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture of the 13th century. Probably, the Master was impressed by the early Burgundian Gothic - strict (I would even say tough), very stingy in external decor. It must be admitted that Mr. Vankas had a real sense of proportion when he modified some of the elements of the temple for the modest urban conditions of Sarajevo.
Remembering the Dijon architectural miracle, he retained the shape of the sanctuary, but transformed the protruding transepts and two two-story extensions into a sacristy and a sacristy. Agree, turning a rather narrow and slender French church into a Bosnian cathedral of restrained height, without losing all the splendor of early Gothic, is Craftsmanship with a capital C!!! The question of how the architect Vankas managed to create a typically Burgundian architectural “atmosphere” with a simple exterior in Sarajevo will remain unanswered. But!!!
You remember that the masters of historicism never particularly mentioned the architectural models from which they copied their creations at the subconscious level... Katedrala Sarajevo, without a doubt, is one of the most interesting must-sees in Sarajevo and I definitely recommend getting to know it!!!

Very beautiful church, right in the middle of the city center. With the mosques nearby, everything in all creates a beautiful picture

The Sarajevo Cathedral, dedicated to the Sacred Heart, was built at the end of the 19th century in a neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style that was fashionable in those years. Damaged in the war like many other buildings and subsequently restored, it has no exceptional architectural merits on the outside while we were not allowed to enter to see the interior.

This is the biggest Catholic Church in Sarajevo; you should visit it to understand the Catholic side of the “European Jerusalem”. John Paul II visited it back in 1997, during his Apostolic trip to Bosnia. Unfortunately, you cannot take pics of the inner part.

This Catholic Cathedral is one of the larger churches in Sarajevo. It's right on the main pedestrian thoroughfare and hard to miss. The interior was closed when we were there, but we admired the outside and its impressive facade. There is also a silver statue out front of Pope John Paul II; he visited Sarajevo in 1997.

En una ciudad sorprendente, cruce de culturas y religiones, ésta es la representación principal de la parte católica. Muy bonita por fuera, relativamente sencilla por dentro. Entrada gratuita
