The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, or Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, or Saborna Crkva Rodenja Presvete Bogorodice, is a large church from the 1860s in the old town of Sarajevo. The interior features, among other things, stained glass windows worth seeing. The entrance fee is 2 KM and it is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The long, rich and varied history of the religious and cultural diversity of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina - Sarajevo, apparently, was the reason that this city in a number of sources is referred to as the “Jerusalem of Europe” or the “Jerusalem of the Balkans”. How many capitals of the world do you know in which a Catholic church, an Orthodox church, a mosque and a synagogue could easily coexist within the boundaries of just one city block? And Sarajevo is just one of these capitals!!!
And in the Mejtaš district of Sarajevo - the most central and, as a result, the most expensive - you can easily find the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Gazi Husrev Beg Mosque, the Il Kal di la Bilava synagogue and the object of my story today - the Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary ( Saborna Church of the Most Holy Theotokos).
And this sacred place is located at a very unusual address: ulica Zelenih beretki, house No. 1. Just the history of this urban “artery” made me finally get to the mentioned object!!! We should start with the fact that this street is mentioned in the chronicles of the 15th century!!! In those mossy times, it consisted of two parts: one was called Kuluk-Chesma Jadesi, which was associated with the kuluk-chesme (drinking fountain) located there, and the other was first known as Sablarska Charshiya, that is, the Sabelnikov Bazaar, and after some time at that time it was renamed Kulukchie Street - (Kulukčije) - that is, swordsmen.
In the second half of the 19th century, the street was named Galata Jadesi, then Tashlihanska - in honor of the stone guest house of Gazi Husrev Bey, known as Tashlihan.
During the Austro-Hungarian period, it was renamed Franje Josip Street - in honor of the head of the dual state - the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Franz Joseph I. Further - more!!! After the departure of the Austrians, the street was promptly given the name of King Peter (Kralja Petra) - in honor of Peter I Karadjordjevic, the first king of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Do you think that this is the end of the “adventures” of this street? No matter how it is!!! From 1941 to 1945 it was known as Ulica br. 1 (Street No. 1) - cool “name”!!!
In 1946 it was named Yugoslav People's Army Street. But the street received its current name “Zelenih Beretki” (“Green Berets”) in 1993 - in honor of the army unit that was formed in Sarajevo in 1991 as a defense unit of Bosnia and Herzegovina. And on this legendary “green beret” Street is located the majestic temple of the Dabro-Bosnian Metropolis of the Serbian Orthodox Church - the Mother of God Nativity Cathedral.
The history of the temple is not as long as the history of the street on which it stands - the foundation of the sacral took place in the summer of 1863. You remember very well that during this period Bosnia and Herzegovina were under the yoke of the Porte (autonomy was obtained only in 1878 under the Treaty of San Stefano), and Sarajevo was part of the Bosnian vilayet, which itself was an administrative unit of the Ottoman Empire, so the construction The Orthodox church was preceded by a long struggle between the believers of the Orthodox parish of Sarajevo and the Turkish administration.
The author of the cathedral project was Andrei Damyanov, a Balkan architect who came from the Damjanovi-Renzovsky family - builders, masons, painters, carpenters, icon painters and stonemasons from the village of Papradiste, near Veles (in the west of modern North Macedonia). This architect left his expressive mark on the architectural history of the Balkans, erecting about 40 (mostly religious) buildings in the territory of present-day North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A distinctive feature of Mr. Damyanov’s work was the interesting combination in his projects of traditional elements of the Moravian school of the 15th century with features of Western Baroque. Therefore, I was not particularly surprised when, looking at the colossus of the Sarajevo Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I isolated from the Baroque style the touches of the Moravian school (the original five-domed structure, decorative patterned plaster in the upper part of the structure, relief carvings on the architraves and portals).
Construction of the temple was completed in 1868, and the 45-meter bell tower - four years later. The church, in its spatial composition, is a three-section (almost three-nave) basilica, which harmoniously fits into the cruciform plan classic for the Moravian and Vardar schools.
The church has five widely spaced hemispherical domes on high light drums. From the east, an apsidar part is attached to the main volume; from the west, a beautiful bell tower rises and the main entrance is equipped. The Nativity of the Mother of God Cathedral in Sarajevo, despite its relative “youth,” is definitely interesting in historical and architectural terms. Highly recommend!!!

This cathedral goes up to the sky in a majestic way. It makes up the Sarajevo skyline and shows how united the people are. Mosques, catholic, orthodox churches are all part of the city and shows a united society.
The interior is beautiful and has an usual pulpit. It costs 3 /5 Bam to enter. Enjoy.

Built between 1884 and 1889 due to the increasing influence of the Serbian community, this amazing cathedral had to be rebuilt after the 90s siege. As the Orthodox tradition wants, you can find many golden icons inside. Fun fact: the square in front of it is used for chess games with real people.

Muy bonita por fuera, sobretodo con la iluminación nocturna. Por dentro por lo que vimos desde la puerta, no es nada especial. No entramos porque había que pagar entrada y entiendo que no vale la pena

The Cathedral Church of the Nativity of Theotokos is the largest Serbian Orthodox church in Sarajevo and one of the largest in the Balkans. Built in eastern Baroque style, the building conforms to Western Christianity cathedral designs, it otherwise conforms to Serbo-Byzantine ground plan and interior structure. The interior decorations are a mixture of Byzantine and Baroque. The most dramatic features of the exterior are the bell tower and five domes. The bell tower is topped with a bulbous Baroque. The central dome is not centred when viewed from the exterior, but is centred on the interior space. It’s also much larger than the other four subsidiary domes.

The interiors are much smaller than the exterior would suggest, but similar in plan to Byzantine churches. The ceilings are decorated with stars against a deep blue background and supported by Romanesque arches on Corinthian columns. Like all Orthodox churches, the iconostasis is at the front of the church and designed in Baroque with paintings representing Orthodox saints, Orthodox monarchs and Jesus in the central panel, all painted in Baroque style. The walls are not copiously decorated like many Orthodox cathedral, but mostly decorated on the columns and arches with slavic geometric patterns . One of the more unusual features is a spiral staircase wrapped around a supporting column leading to a pulpit.

This Orthodox Church is dedicated to the Holy Mother of God and is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the Balkans. Another religious site to sustain significant damage during the recent conflict, this was refurbished just before the turn of the century.

Beautiful building in the hart of the city, where you can witness a church, Synagogue and a Mosque all in very few minutes walk from one each other.
