The place is really very interesting, especially the archaeological part which can be accessed by paying 6 lev. Despite its great age, this part is very well preserved, particularly the tombs and the few mosaics that can be seen there. It's a shame, however, that the place remains relatively dark, often too dark to read the few indications in order to fully appreciate the history of this site. An audio guide could certainly improve the visit.

An important church but given its proximity to the cathedral it remains anonymous and not impressed on the mind. Quick visit but nothing special

This church is located a few steps from the Cathedral and has a particular style because externally it doesn't even look like a church, simple red brick. Over the course of history, it was transformed into a mosque for a period and all the frescoes present were destroyed. This is why it is bare and simple but on the lower floors you can visit the remains of a Roman necropolis by paying 6.00 levs (€3.00). Free entry, you have to pay to take photos or videos.

Externally it does not catch the eye, but inside it has a remarkable structure given by the bricks interspersed with mortar which give an interesting appearance. The dome is very beautiful.

Entrance to this church is also free, and in this case too you need to purchase a ticket to be able to take photographs inside.
The characteristic red brick structure is really very attractive to the eye, and the interiors, which might otherwise be a little too bare, are instead geometrically pleasant.
Definitely worth a visit.

The church of Hagia Sophia was built in the 6th century during the reign of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I (527-565 AD). Initially the site was intended for a Roman necropolis and later for a theatre. Christians built several churches in this place but they were destroyed during the invasions of the Goths and Huns. During the 9th century the church acquired its current form and in the following centuries it functioned as Sofia's cathedral and place of worship thanks to its proximity to one of the city cemeteries. By the 14th century the church had achieved such fame that it gave its name to the city of Sofia which, in ancient Greek, means "wisdom". With the invasion of the Ottomans the church was transformed into a mosque, a minaret was built but all the ancient frescoes were destroyed. In the mid-15th century the building was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt as a mosque by the Ottoman Grand Vizier Siyavush Pasha at the end of the 16th century. The building was damaged again by the earthquakes of 1818 and 1858 which caused the collapse of the minaret and the belief spread among the Turks that they had angered Lord Gaura, a deity, and for this reason they abandoned the mosque. The structure was therefore initially transformed into a warehouse and was later used by the firefighters as a watchtower. After the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman domination, the building was returned to the Orthodox church. In 1927 Hagia Sophia was proclaimed a national antiquity and in the following years a restoration process was undertaken which ended in 1930. On 21 September of the same year the church was consecrated but the Anglo-American bombings of Sofia in 1944 damaged it as did the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. After some work to restore its integrity, in 1955 the temple was declared a cultural and architectural monument of national importance. With the restoration, the temple took on its original appearance and the plan was created following the idea of a Latin cross with an extended eastern nave culminating in the apse and with the dome (without openings) centered on the intersection of the cross. The restoration of the external part of the church took place between 1980 and 1981 following the project and direction of the architects Hristo Ganchev and D. Damyanov of the National Institute for Cultural Heritage. In 1986 a team led by Hristo Ganchev developed a program for the conservation and display of the interiors of the Hagia Sophia Church. The restoration work also included interventions on the Memorial of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Monument to the Unknown Soldier created by Nikola Nikolov. In the crypt under the church several tombs were discovered while other illustrious historical figures are buried nearby (such as the Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov whose tomb is located in the eastern garden) or a monument has been dedicated to him (such as the statue to Paisiy Chilandarskiy, author of Bulgarian history). Today the church of Hagia Sophia is one of the most representative buildings of Christian architecture developed in the south-eastern area of Europe and is known worldwide.

The church is nothing special with photos that should be taken for a fee even if there is little to photograph. Instead, under the church, again for a fee, you can visit a necropolis with frescoes and mosaics.

The Hagia Sophia is the most interesting building in Sofia. Despite the almost complete destruction of the building, it is currently successfully rebuilt and exhibits a basilica-type plan that is strange in the Orthodox Christian world. In addition, it has the attraction of its crypt in which the various phases and uses of the building's occupation can be observed, linked to the promulgation of the Edict of Toleration promulgated by Emperor Galerius.

St. Sophia Church is a historic church made of bricks. The inside of the church is relatively simple, but it has a calming effect. There is a fee to visit the ruins underground, but we were able to see a little bit for free through glass.
