I visited this station while walking around the city. Facing Tomislav Square in the center of Zagreb, the classical station building stands majestically. It is the largest train station in Croatia, and apparently the Orient Express used to stop there, but now it is the departure and arrival station for trains to major cities in Croatia and neighboring countries. I didn't go inside because I didn't have any plans to take a train, but I did take a photo of the elegant 19th century neoclassical station building with the words GLAVNI KOLODVOR (Central Station) on the top of the facade.

These words of warning have been issued on Tripadvisor by travellers before but the taxi situation at the Central Rail Station can't be flagged up too many times. Allthough taxi/taxi rank scams at airports and main railway stations are common enough all over the world, this is the first time I have discovered one as deeply, pervasively, systemic as the Zagreb taxi scam.

There are only three licensed cab firms in Zagreb - the official tourist information centre will tell you that and will highlight them for you on a brochure - and in my experience over a four day stay in the city NONE of them are present in the taxi rank at the main station. These are ALL private taxis, dolled up to look very official and the one I took certainly had a meter - a meter that had been dotored.

All the drivers are in on the scam and probably some rail staff as well - I was directed to the taxi rank by the English-speaking lady ticket inspector who had been most helpful to me up until then, the long journey was at an end and she was smoking a cigarette and chatting with some-one outside the entrance hall. She MUST have known what was going to happen when she pointed me to the taxi rank.

The first driver in line directed me to his colleague behind him. Evidently, his turn to fleece a late night lone female tourist. The driver, who spoke adequate English, told me that the price was 18 Euros per kilometer which sounded very high. I had not, previously investigated taxi issues as I normally would have done, I had intended to walk because I knew my hotel was less than one kilometer from the station. But my husband was worried about my being in a new city quite late at night - nearly 11 pm - and at the last minute I promised him that I would take a taxi. But I accepted this price as he said it was a late night rate and, it must be said, my journey had already taken nearly 6 hours due to rail delays so I was a bit tired.

He took my luggage and put it in the boot of his car which I did not think anything of, but later realised it was part of the scam. Immediately he drove off the meter went crazy and five minutes later, when we arrived at my hotel, it had gone up to 50 Euros. I refused to pay and had a big argument with him in the street, threatened him with the police which he shruggged off and said if I did not pay he would drive off with my luggage - the boot was now locked! I dare not take a photo of his licence plate because of the risk of his driving off w ith my suitcase. He was very insouciant about the whole thing, not at all put out by threats of reporting him, clearly he was practised in this deception. Eventually he acepted a ridiculous 30 Euros for a ride that should have been - as I subsequently disovered - no more than 3 or 4 Euros.

I made many enquiries after that and discovered, from hotel staff and from other taxi drivers, that this is what usually happens at the main rail station, and at the airport as well. Licensed cabs in Zagreb are, in fact, very cheap, the drivers helpful and friendly, and all of them said "This always happens, you have to phone a licensed cab at the station". I was told that it was pointless reporting the matter to the police as neither they, or the city authorities, ever do anything about it. Why? you have to ask yourself, especially as licensed cab rates are low. And why do legitimate cab drivers put up with this situation? One licensed cab driver said to me "You could report something like this to the police 100 times a day and they would still do nothing."

I did, in fact, go back to the main railway station the next day and first of all reported the matter to the station security (there was only one security person) who looked rueful but said he could do nothing. Instead he took me to two young police officers standing on a platform. Both spoke good English and said they were not local officers, they knew nothing at all about this fraud but that it would be taken seriously. I gave a description of the man and they took my details.

The next day I returned and saw the cab driver concerned, again at the front of the rank sitting at a table on the pavement with his cab driver friends. I noted more details of his appearance and dress, and his name on the side of the car. I went into to the station and found one of the police officers I'd spoken to the previous day, she was with a new colleague. We went outside but he had already driven off with a fare. I offered to come to the police station and give a written statement and was told that would not be necessary but that her colleagues would "deal with it". That is the last I have ever heard.

Readers must make what they can of this. It was an unsettling and very objectionable introduction to a city that in every other respect I found charming, friendly, helpful and welcoming. Why the Zagreb authorities do not rid themselves of this shameful blot on the city is something that must have been asked before - indeed, must have been taken up before - clearly to no good effect. And it is all very well advising visitors to phone a cab, never take one at the station - however many will not be aware of the that, and most won't know which cab services are legitimate anyway. And certainly no visitor would expect a member of the rail staff to direct them to a rank of known taxi crooks.

The station building is in need of some attention and renovation to return it to its former glory. If you do like railways then you’ll certainly be able to spot commuter, express and freight trains here.

The Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor, Zagreb's main train station, is a magnificent building in the south of the city center. We passed by it during a walk and took a quick photo break.

This station, opened in 1892, was one of the stops on the Orient Express. Today, despite having lost its importance compared to the first fifty years of the last century, it is worth taking a look at this historic building.

Maybe 100 years ago it was a marvel dedign and construction.
But today it's falling apart.
The platforms are still low ones.
I practically ran off the station in 10 mins, despite planning an hour for visit.

This train station was just across the road from our hotel and was our exit point from the city. We went across to it the day before we left to purchase train tickets.
The signage for the ticket office was a bit ordinary and we eventually found it by sticking our heads through various doors. When we did find it, the staff were very helpful in ensuring we got the right tickets for where we wanted to go and sit.
The train station was a bit grubby, unclean throughout.
The station had some shops just inside the main doors for food, drinks and magazines etc, pretty standard stuff.
There was a large arrivals / departures board and this made it pretty easy to ensure we had the right platform to get our train. There was toilets on the main platform in the terminal.
There was about 7 platforms so it wasn't the biggest station we'd been to.
For catching a train, it was an OK station.
Just watch the road outside when entering or exiting the station as the drivers didn't really stop at the pedestrian crossings.

Железнодорожный вокзал в Загребе был построен в 1890-1892 годы. Находится недалеко от Старого города. На площади рядом с вокзалом стоит памятник первому королю Хорватии Томиславу 1.

Please don't get in a taxi in front of the Central Station building. Call any taxi service. Geniuses have figured out how to work three times less than other taxi drivers, namely, it will charge you three times more expensive for driving. And that's without a meter.

We used this station when arriving from Ljubljana and leaving for Split. It’s a big station with 7 platforms. Figuring out where to get your train is straightforward as there’s a huge departures display. The station has plenty of facilities including toilets, lockers, cafes and fast food restaurants.

As for the building, it was built to a Neoclassical design, with a monumental sized facade. The ground floor is about 50 metres long with arcade style windows. The upper floor has a quad style peristyle of Composite columns, supporting a pediment with sculptures of the Olympians.
