Polecam

I visited this place many times for various temporary exhibitions. When visted last time, a beautiful exhibition of Christoph Niemann was hosted. The museum is located iside the People's House, the largest building in Europe and tge second largest in the world after Pentagon. The surroundings of the building needs a lot of improvement/refurbisment. The museum displays interesting collections of modern art and is well worth a visit, in spite of the 5 minutes walk from the street entrance.

This museum is not well advertised in the city and is hidden away in the grounds in the back section of The ‘People’s Palace’. It is approx a 0.5km walk from the main entrance to the Palace grounds. Security is tight and your bags are put through an airport security scanner. Once you are in, and if you don’t speak Romanian, it can be a bit hard to find out what is in the museum. However, it is well worth persisting as there are some gems tucked away in a museum that is spread over four floors. The first mainly houses changing exhibits whereas the upper floors have a growing permanent collection of highly varied modern work. Also, currently, in an upper storey is a fascinating small exhibition about former Bucharest neighbourhoods that were destroyed during the Ceausescu regime. It includes stories, maps, photos and artefacts from those who lost their homes and thus provides an essential and moving insight into recent history. The top floor houses a cafe with an amazing view from the terrace.

Situated in what looks like a building site at the back of the Parliament, enter from the left side of the Parliament.

Opening hours change in winter, so it was closed when we tried to visit. Returned the following day. Wasn’t really worth the effort.

Pretty poor.

I visited the museum on a hot August Sunday afternoon. Initially it seems like you are entering a building site (broken paving, unfinished footpaths, bricks piled up and some machinery parked around) but if you walk until the end of the driveway, you will see the big MNAC building on your right. The positives 1) You get to see the parliament building up close without actually taking the tour of the parliament 2) The entrance price for the museum is very affordable - I paid only 8 lei 3) There are 4 floors of art to explore 5) There's a good view from the terrace bar and you can have a drink or a coffee (no food). Personally, I didn't like the way that some of the pieces were exhibited and in my opinion the few explanations in English were not very helpful to give much insight into the artist or the art pieces, especially the exhibition on the ground floor. From the point of view of presentation, I preferred the MARe museum (MARe/Muzeul de Artă Recentă) but, if you have the time, go see both and have two different modern art experiences in Bucharest.

We visited the museum on a Saturday afternoon and it was not crowded at all. A very interesting exhibition is called Looking the history and it is about the history of the Eastern Europe and Romania from 1947 to 2007. It is not only about art. It is about the social and political changes and it worth visiting. Then, there are temporary exhibitions at the first, 3rd and 4th floors. Pay attention not to forget to pay the fee for photo which is 15 RON if you have a camera. With the mobile phone you can take how many photos you need. And the surprise was at the 4th floor where we could enjoy a beer( actually there were 2 beers for the rain had started) and a coffee. The view from the small pub is quite interesting for you can see the Great Cathedral still under construction.
