We hiked through the forest with one of the original guerilla and he told us all and showed us some of the sites along the trail from the war. It was really neat being able to ask questions about everything that had happened here. The hike itself was pretty strenuous as it was uphill a lot, but it was short and there were tons of stops where we got a breather and were just listening to the guide. We hiked up to a cool lookout tower as well which offers amazing views over Lake Suchitlan. Afterwards, we hiked back down and cooled off in a secluded waterfall. One of them we had to climb down into a swimming hole and swim to it! This felt great especially after a humid and hot hike through the rain forest.

We had a fantastic day in Cinquera. We were given a tour by a great tour guide called Walter, who was one of the few people in the village who spoke English, so he came just for us. The tour was interesting and there were great views. It's off the tourist track but worth a visit.

The park itself is fine but what makes the experience memorable is Ranger Rafael. A guerilla fighter during the civil war, he has many fascinating stories to share. Cinquera is a poor area and there aren't many restaurant options. If you want to support the economy without much regard to a great meal, then eat lunch locally. It will be your good deed for the day.

We had the opportunity to visit this forest this past week, and it's a fascinating as well as a beautiful place. The history behind it, and the next-door town, with the combination of nature make this a unique place.
But, it's something of a pain to get to, especially if you're staying in or on the other side of San Salvador (e.g. the beach). Even from Sumitomo, the 18 KM drive can take 45 minutes each way.

Visited this park as part of an Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) group and we had Rafael (head ranger) as our guide. He was a former gorilla fighter in their civil war (i.e. they call the "Civilian Conflict") and is the undisputed local expert on the history of the park, etc. He has a wealth of information and is eager to share it with you. However he only speaks Spanish, fortunately our OAT guide translated every thing he said for us. The hike up the mountain is scenic and the path is well maintained. The waterfall and swimming hole by the base of the mountain was not that special. If you speak Spanish, have a local knowledgeable guide, and are interested in El Salvador history this site is a 4 or 5. If not, it is just a 1 or a 2. The history is what is special about this place. I think (according to the sign) there was a $1 admission fee.

How much does the guide cost and about how far is it from San Salvador? I'm planning on staying at the Hilton Princess.
Thanks in ad advance.

Rafael who was a former "gorilla fighter" and now the head ranger of the park was our guide. I do not know what if any he charges or was paid. I do know he was very knowledgeable and conducted a very informative and interesting tour. Note: (in case you are not bilingual) Rafael only spoke Spanish, our Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) guide translated everything.
There is also a very small (like 3 sections in a small building) museum in the city of Cinquera that you could also visit. The girl working there also gave a tour/talk; however, she only spoke Spanish. Our guide translated that too. There was a very small (i.e. nominal) entrance fee for the museum.
Cinquera is a small and picturesque rural community located in the Salvadorian Department of Cabañas, 47 miles or 78 kilometers northeast of the capital city of San Salvador.
During the war all the residents of Cinquera and the surroundings fled, leaving the area around it deserted. Beginning in 1992, the residents of Cinquera began to return, in order to rebuild and restore their village. The vision of Cinquera's residents was to restore their town and to preserve the delicate ecology of the surrounding forested area. The natural preserve was developed with the assistance of international relief organizations to preserve and protect the delicate ecological balance, along with the historical monuments.
At present, the infrastructure includes the park, trails, uniformed guides and restored historical monuments, to support low-impact sustainable Eco-tourism benefiting the entire community while preserving the ambiance of the village with its important links to the Historical Memory of the Armed Conflict 1970-1992.

I want to hear more about this park and the waterfall/pool. How long does the tour last?

It's basically a protected nature reserve with lot's of hiking trails. A lot of the "civilian conflict" fighting took place there. The "tour" would be for how long you hire the local guide for. You can make your visit last as long as you want. I was there around 2 hours; however, there are additional miles of hiking trails that I didn't do. I didn't go in the water; but there were several people there that did. Many of them were locals with their families. The day I was there the water just didn't look real clean; maybe it was just run off from a recent rain, I did visit during the "rainy season". Also, there was a couple booths for changing by the waterfalls.

Hi, we would love to visit Cinquera Rain Forest Park, however we can't seem to find it on Google Earth or Google Maps so we can enter the coordinates into our GPS. Can you please tell us the exact coordinates (in Google Earth's format)? Or, we would appreciate knowing the way it is listed in Google Earth/Maps or having the cross streets if the coordinates are not available. Thanks!
