Built in 2012 with all kinds of history lessons on the walls. Our tourist booklet stated that you can take the elevator up, but we did not find it.

Imposing arch built during the works that saw the urban redevelopment of the city in 2014. It costs nothing to photograph it...

Pela Square (Ploštad Pela or Ploštad Pela) in the capital of North Macedonia Skopje is an urban “penny” located just three hundred meters southeast of the main square of the city - Ploštad Macedonia. And if you walk from the monument “Warrior on Horseback” (read - the monument to Alexander the Great) along 11 Octomvri Street in the mentioned direction, you will definitely not miss one of the local must-sees - Porta Macedonja (Triumphal Arch of Macedonia).
On my travel routes in different countries I have already encountered structures of this type (the latest is the Arch of Constantine in Rome). Those interested in history and architecture remember very well that the triumphal arch is a type of monumental structure in the form of an architecturally designed arch. The history of such objects goes back to the times of the ancient Etruscans in Italy and the peoples of the Middle East (and by no means Ancient Rome, as some sources claim).
According to ancient custom, the army, after another deadly battle, could not enter the city without being cleansed of shed blood and had to remain outside the city walls on the campus mortius (“field of the dead”). And this is where the fun begins!!! First, a thanksgiving sacrifice to the gods was carried out, and only after this followed the ritual cleansing of the winning troops (lustratio - that is, cleansing through, again, sacrifice). The priest, accompanied by sacrificial animals, walked around in a circle (in the direction of the Sun) the army formed in battle formations.
“Closing the circle” and collecting upon himself all the uncleanness resulting from the battles, he laid his hands on the heads of the sacrificial animals. After reading certain priestly formulas, uncleanness passed on to them. The animals were then dedicated to the deity of war and given a quick and painless death.
And only after that the theme of the arch began!!! Upon returning to the city, the victorious army was ordered to enter its borders through a specially constructed arch - it supposedly retained all the remaining military uncleanness.
After passing, solely in order to close the portal of astral contact with otherworldly negative creatures and worlds following the army, the arch was burned. Later, when the understanding of these quantities was lost, they stopped burning triumphal arches. So, about the arches. For the procedure of the second (arched) stage of purification, a gate was initially erected from two vertical pillars and a horizontal beam, painted red. And here the Romans finally appear “on the scene”: the latter adapted this design for military triumphs, but instead of a gate they used an arch (also an invention of the peoples of the Hellenized East). In general, triumphal arches, which originated as an element of the rite of purification of the victorious army, turned into an architectural beauty that, just in the days of Ancient Rome, began to be erected at the entrance to cities, along the streets, on bridges, on large roads in honor of the winners (usually crowned ) or in memory of important historical events.
As for “Port Macedonia”, this building is part of the grandiose urban project “Skopje 2014”, which was launched by local authorities in 2010 in order to give the capital of North Macedonia tourist chic and visual beauty. In order to somehow maintain tradition (as I already mentioned, triumphal arches were erected in honor of some significant event), the opening of Porta Macedonja was planned to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Macedonia (that is, September 8, 2011). However, something went wrong and the Arc de Triomphe was finally inaugurated on January 6, 2012.
For the architecture of the structure: a classic version of the corresponding single-arched two-tier building with a height of 21 meters. The most interesting thing about this must see is that its outer surface is covered with almost TWO HUNDRED SQUARE METERS (193 square meters to be precise) of bas-reliefs carved from marble!!!
And these images represent all sorts of different events and historical figures, one way or another connected with the history of Ancient Macedonia and the current Republic of Macedonia (kings Philip II, Alexander the Great, Samuel, the ubiquitous preacher brothers Cyril and Methodius, Ohrid enlighteners Clement and Nahum, the last ruler Prilep Kingdom Marko Kraljevic, leader of the Haiduks and leader of the uprising against Ottoman power in 1689 Karposh, participants in the Ilinden uprising of 1903, significant events of the 20th century (ASNOM - Anti-Fascist Assembly for the People's Liberation of Macedonia) etc.
In addition, the triumphal arch is decorated with four bronze statues at the corners of the first tier. The author of the construction project is local sculptor Valentina Stefanovska. By the way, immediately after the opening of the Skopje Arch, not for the first time, the Greeks started a “mouse race” on the topic of encroachments by the North Macedonians on the history of Greece: wow, on the structure there are images of great GREEK historical figures (including Alexander the Great)!!!
Thank God, the authorities of North Macedonia were smart enough not to react to these not entirely justified claims. Standing in front of the lurid, snow-white building, my modest thoughts contrasting with the surrounding urban “setting,” I involuntarily remembered the 2008 studio album “Porta Macedonia” by Alexander Velyanov, the vocalist of the darkwave band “Deine Lakaien,” that anticipated the appearance of Porta Macedonja.
The musical associations of the mentioned disc that emerged in my memory, “multiplied” by the visualization of the object, gave rise in my soul to the feeling of being in some kind of mystical room, full of magical attraction and secrets.
Veljanov’s “techniques” of Byzantine and Orthodox musical elements, the sounds of classical rock instruments, “intertwined” with the melodies of the crumhorn, kavala, zurla, Hammond organ and theremin began to sound in my head... And the Arc de Triomphe of Skopje in this case is perceived not just as another architectural structure, but as a “bridge” connecting personal and intimate perceptions and global events, the Balkans and Western Europe, the former history of Eastern Europe and the present day... Don't miss it!!!

This gateway leads from the main road down to Macedonia Square. It is similar in style to many others I've seen in Europe with it's clear white walls, intricate carvings, high pillars, central arch and figurines to the top. You can also venture inside and go to it's 360 degree viewing balcony to see parts of the city

A stone's throw from our hotel, in the direction of the square, we couldn't help but notice this triumphal arch which is part of the urban renovation of this century but placed there a little out of context. Nothing unmissable.

Macedonia arch reminds me of a few others in countries I have previously visited. However, walk through it and discover other sites and Parliament and opposite more statues of the first parliament of Macedonia. It's Macedonia gate but it more looks like the Arch seen in other countries
