Great experience! Definitely one the most authentic experiences that you could have in Guatemala especially if you love cooking. Learn to cook a great meal along with secrets from local chefs. Cook in a private kitchen behind a local tienda on the outskirts of Antigua. Frijol Feliz assisted to make it easy to find and provided transportation to their new location. Our chef, Pedro, was great at explaining the recipe, cooking secrets, and history of the meal. We cooked pepian, refried beans, hand made tortillas, and bunuelos for dessert. They all came out unbelievable. We would definitely do it again!

This was amazing! El Frijol Feliz was recommended by my Spanish teacher - she said they were the best. Pedro was fantastic and Tono too! Our kids are young (8 and 9) but jumped right in and were engaged the entire time. Since the class they have wanted to make dinner almost every night! We made the Chile rellenos, tortillas, refried beans, rellenitos de plátanos — all were absolutely fantastic! One more thing: since the pandemic the classes were moved to a teaching kitchen in a traditional Guatemalan home. We thought this was so cool and really added to the atmosphere and enjoyment! It gave us some insight into Guatemalan life - different and much cooler than we would have gotten if we were at a big teaching kitchen in the city. I can’t say enough good things about them.

This was a fun personal experience cooking authentic Guatemalan food. We also enjoyed our visit to the central market in Antigua. Our cooking instructor Pedro was personable, engaging, and fun to be around.

1/6/23 Covid closed the original cooking school near the plaza. Soo……. Now its even better! The owner of rhe cooking school now has classes in his home. Big kitchen to work in, real Antigua neighborhood, great cooking class, authentic Guatemalan expercience. Loved it!
We made the local Pepian stew with chicken, tamalitos, rice, and for dessert mashed plantains with chocolate in the middle. We visited the local market to buy food. My cooking teacher picked me up at my hotel, and later picked up my husband to come eat what i had cooked! Service.
It was the best experience in Guatemala if you like to cook.

Class was really amazing and it will be no exaggeration to say that it was best day of our stay in Gwatemala. We did delicious dishes that was perfect cooking experience and thanks to Pedro we had real lesson about Guatemalan's culture. I can 100% vouch for El Frijol Felix Cooking School. Thanks again!

Attempted to visit during my trip to Antigua in May 2018. Like a couple other reviewers, we had a confirmed reservation, and were given a meeting place/time and no other communication. The meeting place turned out to be a completely different school, La Tortilla. They had no record of our booking for learning specific dishes or the market tour. The host there shook his head when we discussed what happened, like it has happened often and he was not surprised by El Frijol Feliz's lack of organization. Thankfully La Tortilla was extremely accommodating and friendly and we ended up returning the following day for a great experience, but the format is different from what we expected from El Frijol Feliz since is a group session where the tasks are divided up.
Just go book directly with La Tortilla instead. Wonderful folks who are easy to communicate with over there.

The market tour was a photographers dream and the dinner plus desert we prepared was entertaining, delicious and informative. I would highly recommend a cooking class--my teenage granddaughters enjoyed every minute of the actual food preparation and enjoyed interacting with our Guatemalan chef and French helper (very handsome young man). A great way to experience and understand the flavors of

An amazing cooking experience with the owner- chef filled with laughter and skill! Many choices of meals were offered and included wine. Techniques and tips abound! The culminating meal which you have prepared, served by staff, is a just and fulfilling reward, with to-go boxes which were needed and appreciated!

We had confirmed reservation, went to the place and couldn't find the entrance--we spoke to other merchants and were told the place has been out of business for one month.
Another reviewer reported a similar problem last week, but was apparently notified. We were not.

We booked a cooking class with El Frijol and all was confirmed weeks in advance. The day prior we were advised by them that the meeting location was changed to "their sister location" rather than as planned (we were to start with a market tour prior to the cooking class). Well their sister location was actually a completely different cooking school (La Tortilla) and not a sister property. La Tortilla informed us they were helping their competitor out as El Frijol was unable to do the class. Additionally La Tortilla, although we had pre-arranged what dishes we were to make with El Frijol, advised us (just before we began cooking) that we would be making dishes that they group cooks as a class all together. This is not the fault of Tortilla as this is their set-up structure and they thought we had been advised of all this by El Frijol. The issue is El Frijol didn't advise us of any of this, other than we were now meet at their sister property. Extremely poor customer service on El Frijol part. We should have been advised in advance so we could decide with we wanted to still proceed with La Torilla or not.
Needless to stay, just book with La Torilla or some other cooking school to begin with and save yourself the hassle of El Frijol.

I don't know if children are discounted. For me and my 18 year odl son, it was fun but labor intensive. We both enjoy cooking a lot, but I think it might be a waste with younger children.
