Galerija Mestrovic is located in a beautiful building with beautiful (but mostly religious) sculptures by the great Croatian sculptor, both in halls and outside in the sculpture garden. A must see if you love sculptures.
Also visited in combination with Meštrović Crikvine – Kaštilac/ church, a short walk from Galerija Mestrovic.

We entered the main gate to take a quick photo of the building and use the toilet before purchasing a ticket as we were desperate. On the way back to the ticket office to buy a ticket I stopped to pet a Cat on the steps and was screamed at by a female member of staff not to touch. She then asked if I had a ticket, to which I replied my partner is just using the toilet before we get a ticket.she was very rude and demanded that we leave Immediately. She then stood on the steps shooing me away and stood watching on the steps to make sure we left. Decided we didn't want to see the museum that badly after being spoken to this way. Not the best way to attract custom. Very rude and not reflective of the rest of the friendly locals. Avoid.

Mestrovic’s sculptures are jawdropping and leave you feeling emotional. The villa and the chapel, with its views, the wooden reliefs, the grounds were spectacular. I don’t understand how this place isn’t a must see for any art lover. It was my own, personal Ultra

You pay US$ 10.00 per person (students and seniors pay US$ 6.00) to enter and there is no parking nearby, making it necessary to park a few streets away, in the area close to the waterfront. This gallery was Ivan Mestrovic's residence in the early 1930s. The sculptor himself designed the building to be his family's home, studio and gallery. His sculptures, including Distant Accords and Persephone, decorate the garden and interior. Among marble, wood and bronze statues are The Contemplation, The Promise and Psyche. Part of the building still preserves the artist's quarters. Kastilac (Mestroviceve Crikvine Kastilac), at number 39 on the same street, can be visited with the same entrance.

I hadn't heard of this guy but he was a man with an international reputation who had great success in his lifetime. He produced public art in the USA where he taught. During WW2 he fell foul of the Croatian Fascists and suffered greatly. In addition to the villa/ museum he installed wood relief carvings depicting the life of Christ.
Worth a detour if you are interested in sculpture in the first half of the 20th century.
The museum overlooks the sea and accessible beaches are nearby.

Meštrović was a great artist, but his best work is elsewhere. The venue is spectacular with several sculptures in a huge lawn. As with most museums in Split, this one is lightly attended. The ratio of people partying to those in museums is a zillion to one. I particularly like the sculpture of Job in the museum.

Ivan Mestrovic, the Croatian Michelangelo, is Croatia’s greatest sculptor, whose works are visible in every corner of the city - Grgur Ninski and Marko Marulic are among his most well-known.
His gallery is an art museum founded in 1952 and dedicated to the work of this 20th century sculptor and is located on the south slopes of Marjan hill.
The Ivan Mestrovic Gallery is one of the most famous art museums in Split dedicated to this 20th century sculptor. The gallery itself is a monument of art in addition to showcasing a number of significant works by Mestrovic.
The land where the gallery stands was purchased by the sculptor in the 1920s who then got two famous architects, Lavoslav Horvat and Harold Bilinic to design and build his summer home. Mestrovic used it as a summer home, studio and exhibit space until 1941 when he left for Zagreb. In 1952, he donated the property along with his art collection to the state following which the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery was founded.
The gallery is home to around 192 sculptures, 580 drawings, several architectural plans and paintings by Mestrovic in addition to 2 furniture sets. Many of Mestrovic’s work in bronze, marble, stone and wood are among the permanent exhibits that cover two floors of the building. Another interesting location is the outdoor sculpture park. Some of the interesting exhibits include a number of religious works.
The west wing has many of the artist’s works from the secession period while the east wing is dedicated to sculptures made between WWI and WWII. In addition, the gallery features an extensive collection of documentation that includes films, photos, articles, and manuscripts related to Mestrovic’s life and work.
The gallery building and grounds were based on original plans by Meštrović himself, and included living and working areas, as well as exhibition spaces.
Ivan Meštrović had planned the villa primarily as a family home and working studio, so the conversion into a complete museum space required some modification, while still retaining the original character of the halls and rooms.
On our visit to the Mestrovic Gallery, our ticket included a stop at Kastelet, a 16th century restored chapel that houses a set of wooden wall panels carved by Ivan Meštrović - 28 wooden reliefs are displayed here. It is located about a 10 minute walk down the road on the water side. A worthwhile detour before heading back into town.

We are arriving 2 June 2015 on the cruise ship Celebrity constellation - what is the best way for four people to travel to the Mestrovic museum - what is the admission price. Is it a downhill walk back to Split. Thank you.

buses pass the gallery and short taxi ride won't cost much -it is not far but up hill from the town
