Thieng is a passionate guide to his pottery village and home studio, and explains much of the history and current situation of Ban Chan that's informative. There's a boat ride across the Mekong, the experience of doing hands-on pottery, beautiful pottery to buy, and the best Lao lunch ever.

A worthwhile visit if you are interested in terracotta pottery fired in an amazing underground wood fired kiln. This technique has been used for over 400 years.

This small village outside of LP along the Mekong River was the last stop on our day. We loved visiting the local potters. Our guide interpreted for us and we had great conversations with some of the artisans. We bought a few pieces of small pottery. we observed the community kiln, several artisans, etc.

This was an interesting stop for our small tour group, especially watching the master pottery crafter, however, as far as being able to purchase anything to ship home to the US it was a useless stop. We did buy a few small pottery trinkets from the young girl who did a demonstration first. The first family had a nice area and seating under cover available. Further down where the master was we saw a huge home built outdoor oven which was fascinating with so much lumber to use in it. That was amazing to see and he does beautiful work which graces various hotel lobbies around the city.

You need to have a motorbike for this place. Tut tut that you pick up from the ferry pier on the otheside will do as well, it’s a long way along bumpy dirt track to get to the village, Once there there is nothing to see - apart the village and rhe one or two places selling / disanpottry making.

I took the ferry (the cities ferry not other boats avail.), got a tuk tuk (which i'm glad I did because it is a loooooonnnnnng walk without) and went to the rural pottery village. They don't speak English but they were friendly and pulled me up a seat so that I could watch them work (a man and woman). The quality was probably not the best I've seen but i'm glad I got the opportunity to see it and the kiln. You can call ahead beforehand for a 30 min. tour, I didn't. There is not much else to do in the area that I am aware of. There is no charge but they'd appreciate you buying some of their art.

Went as an independent group just exploring to other side of the river. Ferry 10k each. Ride to village. Poor signage until you get to the top of the hill. Rough road so spend a bit and get a good mountain bike. 40-50k. For a day. Came in the back of the village but were given directions to where it all happens. Go right at bottom of hill into the village. Would be great if operating. Saturday so was very quiet. They hit you up for 10k to enter the village by an old toothless friendly gentleman. No sign to ask for it. Were offered a boat ride back with our bikes. Haha. What a ride!

If you just get off a boat and are sent up the hill for 30 minutes, this will be a complete loss, just like Whiskey Village. If you are lucky you might see a few people sitting in a shed making pots, but you will be hard pressed to understand or appreciate what is going on or what it all means.

However, if you get a guide, then there is so much to see and learn. The local Pottery Making business does guided tours, as well as serves a fantastic lunch and you can try pottery making. This is definitely the way to go.
