Salaam, All! I'm trying to decide if I ought to include the Temples of Baalbek ruins in my Lebanon itinerary despite having visited a good number of ancient ruins scattered across the Mediterranean and North America in the last three years. I'm hoping some of the experienced travellers here can opine? Here are the details: I'll be in Lebanon next month, and will have time in my itinerary to visit the capital, the coastal cities from Tripoli in the north to Tyre in the south, as well as an extra day to saunter out east to visit Baalbek. However, in the last three years or so, I've visited a good number of ruin sites, and really want to diversify my travel experiences. If the legendary Temple of Baalbek site is simply another ruin site to check off a list, then perhaps it is not for me. That said, I'm well aware that every ruin site is different and it is therefore possible to have visited a good number in the recent past and still extract value and enjoyment from yet another. Would this be so in my case with a visit to Baalbek? My past three-year ruins itinerary includes some of the ancient Roman cities of Northern Algeria; some sites in Northern and Central Tunisia; a few Mayan pyramids and temples in Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico; along with the usual suspects in Rome and around. Keen to learn your thoughts on this, and thanks in advance to all those who take the time to respond. :-)

Hello, I'm thinking of renting a car in Lebanon for a week. Is it safe to travel by myself to most of the sites? Including baalbek?

I don't think you should drive yourself in Lebanon. To go to Baalbek you have to cross several checkpoints. I felt that the situation was very unstable there. We used a great driver who is also a guide. Adel Nayfeh his... Mer

Hi there. I am going to travel through the region (Egypt, Jordan, Israel), and have been longing to visit Lebanon as well. Everywhere I look, there's a security warning against such travel here in the West... It's really confusing. Is it really bad at all? And if not, is there a way of getting from either Israel or Amman to Beirut without hustle please? Thank you.

Hi Montclair. Thanks for your query. Yes, governments are required to give security warnings against visiting Lebanon, because there are safety issues, but it is not all as bad as the impression given, and I would not... Mer
