We read the reviews before we decided to do the trail - a mixed bag really, but most were saying that it was work in progress and that at times it was very confusing. Now having done it I would totally agree!
Well we went for it - leaving our car at the museum, we took the boat across to the fort where the signage was good and the bridge across the dual carriageway ideal. We had no map as such, only a vague idea of where we were heading.
You need to follow the signs and the lamp posts which are supposed to represent pearls, all worked well - you do need to keep a watch out for the post as you are weaving in and out of the streets and can make a wrong turn. A huge amount of building work is taking place, (someone is investing big money) & sometimes you can’t follow the path, but with some thought and a helpful local you can bypass the closed section.
We walked for a hour and a half and only did half of the trail,
deciding after having coffee on the roof of Sophia book shop, which we can highly recommend, that we’d cut our losses and work our way back to the boat which was the right decision.
Be aware that the boat although it says starts at 9am and goes every 45 minutes can be fluid. The boat seems to leave the museum on time but only comes to the fort if they have people which to go to there, it’s not a shuttle service as we originally thought.
Some people had taken the boat, had 15 mins round a limited exhibition and then caught the boat back, there is more to the Pearl Trail than that!
All in all would I recommend that you do the trail - possibly no unless like us you have time to kill and are prepared to wander through various building sites, dropping occasionally on some stunning new buildings, the car parks which should have been finished 2023 are really something. Give it five years to get the building work done plus either a good map or a QR code with the trail & information, would make all the difference.

A pleasant morning spent exploring part of the Pearling Path. The Qala’t Bu Mahir fort (and the reason for my short trip to Maharraq from Manama) was closed to visitors as it is currently under construction (and looking rather in need of it). The visitors centre is a stunning piece of architecture and had some interesting exhibits although could have been so much more, perhaps?) Enjoyable walk along the path to the old town. Not sure I’d bother doing it again, but a pleasant morning exploring nevertheless.

Amazing History. Lovey to see so many different types of housing and experience the walk through the houses.
Signposting is poor, so be prepared to get lost
No properties open on a Friday, but you will not be told this
Will be amazing when completed

Some year, this will be a nice place, but 2020 is not that year. Even the Uber driver asked us if this was truly the place we wanted to be dropped. It's large, and from the outside looks more like a bomb shelter than a museum. Inside the walls, they have nicely renovated some old structures, but there is not a sign anywhere in any language to indicate what you are seeing. There is also a closed, formidable looking new age building, with no visible entrance, that turns out to be a visitor and interpretive space. I've posted some photos to help you find the entry. The Pearling Pathway itself was so interesting to walk! Keep an eye out for the occasional sign indicating that you are on the path and the direction to turn. But again be warned that you need to get the pathway map from the website of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (pearlingpath.bh at the time of this post), plus you will need an active map app, plus some other source for information on what you are seeing. Definitely worth the visit, but it takes some effort.

The Bahrain pearl trail is amazing but more information is needed so that the amazing places can be explored by the tourist. We couldn't find so many places because of lack of GPS tracking available. Even the visitors centre had no pamphlet available.

Over the years I have explored Muharraq in different ways, often related to its rich "pearl" history: Bin Matar house eg. Maybe 6 months ago I got lost on the path, but now it is much easier to follow, mainly because of the lamp posts all along. I did it during the day but I am sure that it will be a complete new experience in the late afternoon, early evening when there is more hustle and bustle. Since the last time more and more houses are renovated and I found it really interesting all along.
I recommend to make only a small detour to see the Shaikh Isa bin Ali house/palace which is "must see" in my view. Website pearlingpath.bh is good but I was unable to load the path on my phone but the relevant Authority send me a link, which worked well. You don't need it as the lamp posts are the best guidance. One minus, on which they are working: I did not start at the National Museum , then a boat trip then Bu Mahir fort, but on the other site of the highway as I could not find the fort easily with a car and parking is not really available. Also crossing the Highway is dangerous. The Authority told me there will be a pedestrian crossing but that will take time. Despite this, I enjoyed it very much , as my guest from Europe did. Practical: plenty of little shops to buy water but also resting areas with water fountains. Plus also very simple coffee houses and a beautiful cafe restaurant Saffron by Jena.

This is an ongoing project so I believe any issues noted will hopefully be addressed in time

Overall I enjoyed this 'attraction' but it's not without it's challenges.

This understandably isn't an easy 'attraction' to review as it is several exhibits spread around a small town, it's trying to give you an insight of days gone by, but now mixed with new buildings and a new way of life.

Due to heavy traffic and parking issues I ended up doing this route in reverse (considering the museum is a suggested starting point).

It's a lovely insight to an almost forgotten time - gives you a glimpse into how the materials of the houses were sourced, how the houses were built, how these spaces turned into a communal area. In these areas they showed how the women spent their days weaving, cooking etc. (this could do with some more 'interactive' displays or even some projections, music, etc just to bring the spaces alive. There are several more houses that show, where the pearls where weighed, doctors, sail repair etc but I missed them as they are not clearly marked

There is a fascinating display of the first journalist in Bahrain - this house is worth the visit alone. (

The starting museum contains some great exhibits of Pearls, jewellery and is housed in a very modern concrete building that is great for photography. This museum is set in the grounds of an old market place that is partially restored giving you a glimpse of what the area was like.

I have a few issues with this 'Attraction' that if addressed would be a great improvement -

Parking - This area is now in a busy area so parking is crazy
Route Planning - No direction, no map, no marked out route and I was forced to use Google Maps to find 'Where next'
Signage - Some of the buildings on the Route had no English signs and I often felt I was in the wrong building.
Staff - If your only going to have 'security' in a building ensure they speak English (or at least 'Arabic').

If you have young children, you need to use strollers, any member of your party is disabled or in a wheelchair etc then this 'route' is not for you, you do have to cross some busy streets etc
