If you were looking for an easy hiking path to do with young kids this is a great spot. There's plenty of celery, of course, but there's also lots of other animals including a wide variety of birds. This is not a strenuous hike at all, flat all the way around. A nice place to go if you and or the little ones need some outdoor time.

Today it is called the Celery Farm mainly a result of the fact that in 1888 Swiss emigrant Henry J. Appert and his wife Ella bought the 107 acre-property and converted the land which was an excavated peat bog into a farm which grew mainly celery and onions.
The land has a rich history has seen this parcel of land transition from a glacial land to a peat bog, to a farm and now a nature preserve. The Wolf Clan of the Lenni Lenape gather here to hunt the abundant game in the area. Later in colonial times Founding Father John Fell took possession of the. In the 1080's the borough of Allendale bought the track of land and converted it into a nature preserve. The Celery Farm is an important site for migratory birds and thus bird watchers. There are several areas where birds can be observed including a raised platform overlooking the small lake. There are trails which run about a mile through the preserve. The trails are very wet in spots after any kind of precipitation. Roots and rocks jut up along the path making hiking uncomfortable. When I visited there were numerous hikers who wore masks and observed social distancing. Dogs are not permitted on the trails.

Although this was farmland long ago, today it's a quiet and peaceful nature preserve. You can hike through the woods or around the pond. These are easy hikes, suitable for children and older folks if they can manage a mile walk. Bring your binoculars to observe wildlife from the viewing platforms at the edge of the pond.
Some notes: Parking is limited, so on a nice day go at off hours. In the spring the paths can be muddy, so choose footwear accordingly. There are no restrooms or food, but it's a short drive to downtown Allendale.
The Celery Farm is a peaceful gem, located in a densely populated suburb. I hope you enjoy it.

No dogs and no parking, very disappointing , keep you dog home, you are on your own to find a parking spot on side streets

An oasis in northern Bergen county. A wide variety of wildlife is visible and is very peaceful to walk through. In good weather parking can be challenging due to limited space although we live in town and usually walk there. It is carry in and carry out with no dogs allowed.

A nice 1 mile trail loops through the forest around a large pond and past several viewing platforms. The outside of the trail mostly borders the backyards of houses, one of which had a chain saw going as we went past. We also had to put up with a jogger blasting past us 4 times as we slowly worked our way around. This is supposed to be an excellent birding area, but it wasn't very active while we were there. We did get to see wild turkeys (in someone's back yard) and a few interesting ducks on the pond, but couldn't get a good look without a spotting scope.

Birds of prey, foxes, and all other sorts of fauna and flora. What a gem in the middle of the count to take a lovely walk on a Sunday.

An easy, pleasing walk in the woods with some pleasing scenery to view. The trail is flat and fairly smooth,. Several viewing platforms from which you can see or photograph wild life.Limited parking, but you can park on the street. Trails are well marked. The only disappointment was the lack of wild-life to see....I have more deer in my back yard than they hav in the reserve.

Not too much to see. But super peaceful especially with fall foliage. Maybe spring will bring more birds but I didn’t see any thing different then a woodpecker and brown bird. Not a super busy place so when the wind is blowing and the stalks are higher than you that your walking through seems spooky, eery. Can get beautiful pics. I would not recommend for young women alone. Or even young men. I’m just cautious. Do wear a hat for ticks.

We took a morning walk around here and it was great, plenty of creatures about; butterflies, some red flying insects, ducks, Canada geese and even a pair of deer. You can easily follow the trail around where at places they have look out places so you can see over the lake. The curious site of our visit was a bulldozer rusting away by the trail. I wonder how many years it has been there?
Just one more thing to mention, there are signs but watch out for poison ivy.
