In the sophisticated public health system of the great Dhammaraja Jayavarman VII, the complex water basins of Neak Pean, the artifical Entwined Serpents island, represents a reflection of cosmology, spiritual powers of the water, but not least water therapy in a balneological, genuinely spa-related way. A fantastic, gorgeous monument to and of free public health for all, as it should be, from the 12th/13th century - and a great challenge for public policy today, everywhere.

Touristically, I think a must visit for the non-touristy tourists because of the lovely access bridge and the entire setup of an artificial island in an artificial lake.

Access is via a large wooden bridge. It takes you to the Island and there you can enjoy different temples from the shore, they cannot be visited inside.
Original location and views in the middle of an artificial lake

Magical place. A huge water tank with a long narrow bridge across it, water flowers around. You will reach an island with an even smaller reservoir and a small building in it. There is not much to see, but the whole thing has a great charm. The island is full of greenery. We liked it very much.

This was fun to walk across the boardwalk on a lake to get to the trail that leads you to this temple. The temple is an artificial island with a small Hindu temple on it. At the base of the island are two snakes that surround the island. We liked that the scenery was unique from the other temples

Neak Poan temple is undeniably one of the standout attractions in Siem Reap. Despite its small size, this temple's simple tower on a picturesque island, encircled by serene pools of water, creates a captivating sight. What sets this place apart is its location on an island within a vast baray, offering a unique and tranquil experience. The stunning reflections on the water make it an absolute photographer's paradise, and I was particularly impressed when I captured the aerial view. This hidden gem in the middle of an island is an absolute must-visit. I wholeheartedly recommend exploring Neak Poan temple for a memorable and enchanting experience.

The walk to the temple is beautiful. You walk across a wooden walk at surrounded by water and lotus flowers.

The temple is beautiful, but I highly recommend this for the walk!

While not impressive as other sites, it is still worth seeing. The trips there on the long bridge surrounded by lotuses is quite an experience in itself. Do get a guide or a guidebook, without it, I would have missed the horse statue and its story.

Although small this site is a bit different to the usual Angkor temples given that it is surrounded by water, so I would still include it in any visit to Angkor lasting 2 or more days. There is a pleasant walk over the moat via a long and narrow bridge and if the waters are still you can get some great photos of the reflection in the water of the landscape.

You start on a path that leads 200m over a footbridge. From here you already have a very nice view of the friendly surroundings and also of the island to which the footbridge leads.
The actual sanctuary is now located on this island. This is also a work of Jayavarman VII, but it stands out somewhat from his other objects.
Nevertheless, it is worth seeing. It is a tower-like building that is located on a circular island in the middle of a pond, which in turn is located within the large island. At the time of our visit, there was no way to get to the island with the sanctuary, but the view over there and also of some of the structures in the water is impressive. The path that leads around the pond was also only partially accessible. We were only allowed to walk about 120°.
Despite these restrictions, we found our visit quite nice.

This small temple in the center of Jayatataka baray, a reservoir that is flooded during the Cambodian rainy season, was commissioned by Jayavarman VII during the second half of the 12th century. It is believed to have served as a site for pilgrims to seek absolution as well as for medical needs of the King's subjects as one of many hospitals erected during his reign.

Unlike many other Mebons (temples constructed on islands found in the middle of a reservoir), the main temple arises from a round foundation within the central pond, which forms the center of an ordinal arrangement of four smaller ponds. The central temple is faced by a statue of the horse Balaha, which is depicted saving sailors from a demon.

Four sandstone structures connect the central pond to the four adjacent ones, but the bulk of these are submerged during the rainy season. Our tour guide described the animal and human gargoyles that are housed in these structures and represent the four directions describing the ancient world.

Although these sculptures are more visible during the dry season, preservation efforts have closed the pools to the viewing public. Unfortunately, this also limits a closer examination of the detailed carvings that adorn the central sanctuary. The temple area can only be observed from its southern edge after a short walk across a wooden footbridge to the viewing platform.
